Presentation: Relationships Beyond the Norm

Bi+ people, or people who are attracted to more than one gender, often face expectations and prejudices about their relationships due to their sexual orientation. For example, people have prejudices about bi+ people regarding faithfulness, monogamy, and (hyper)sexuality. These prejudices and stereotypes can affect bi+ people themselves, as well as their partner(s) and those around them. Bi+ people often have relationships with people of a different sexual orientation than themselves, namely monosexual people. In this presentation, Daphne Hermsen from Bi+ Nederland will talk about the exploration 'Relationships Beyond the Norm'. This exploration discusses, among other things, what prejudices monosexual partners have about bi+ people and how this affects their relationships, but also how prejudices about bi+ people from outside can negatively influence monosexual partners of bi+ people. And how can bi+ and monosexual partners support each other in this?

Daphne Hermsen is a knowledge employee at Bi+ Nederland. In her work, Daphne delves into the different experiences of bi+ people, for example at work, in relationships, and in the LGBTQIA+ community. She co-authored the Explorations 'Bi+ people and relationships' and 'Relationships Beyond the Norm' from Bi+ Nederland.
