Coffee with Homer
About the event
You’ve seen the movie, you may have even read the epic. But have you read the epic before the epic? This fall, the Department of Religion and Classics will be hosting a discussion of Homer’s Iliad. We will meet roughly every other Thursday (six times in total), and each session we will discuss 4 more books of the Iliad (Emily Wilson’s translation will be used, but you can read whatever translation you like or have access to—Fagles’s translation is also quite readable, too). Bring your coffee or tea, maybe your breakfast, and an appetite for rage, mayhem, and grief. You will be expected to have read the sections we will discuss prior to the meeting. Open to all.
Schedule: Sept 10: Books 1-4; Sept 24: Books 5-8; Oct 8: Books 9-12; Oct. 29: Books 13-16 ;Nov. 12: Books 17-20; Dec. 3: Books 21-24. (Please note the December 3 meeting will take place in Retner 308 - The Tree House play area).
