Pretty as a Penny Productions (PaaPP) proudly presents the 8-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy phenomenon Hairspray at the Lawrenceville Arts Center from October 2 through October 24, 2026. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and delightfully optimistic teen Tracy Turnblad has one big dream: to dance on the popular local TV program, The Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy transforms from outsider to sudden celebrity overnight, using her newfound platform to champion integration, self-acceptance, and body positivity. Directed by Jono Davis and Candy McLellan and featuring hit songs like “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” “Good Morning Baltimore,” and “Welcome to the ’60s,” Hairspray is a vibrant, heart-filled tribute to community and radical love. This inaugural production carries special meaning for PaaPP founder Charlotte Banks, honoring the memory of her late rescue dog, Penny Lou.
