Gay Memphis: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Memphis has two full-time gay bars, The Pumping Station and Dru's Place, plus a queer-run drag lounge, a big community centre and a June Pride that fills Beale Street. There's no bathhouse, no lesbian bar and no gay strip you can walk end to end. If you come for the music, the civil-rights history and the barbecue, the queer side of town fits into a couple of good evenings in Midtown.

Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage is legal in Tennessee (since Obergefell, 2015), but the state has no LGBTQ+ non-discrimination law, a 2023 drag-restriction law is in force, and the US Supreme Court upheld the state's ban on gender-affirming care for minors in US v. Skrmetti (June 2025). Memphis's own 2012 ordinance protects city employees only.

Where the scene is

Midtown is where queer Memphis lives and drinks. Every source we checked puts the bars there, and the core is the Madison Avenue corridor around Madison and Cleveland, sometimes called Madison Heights. That has been the gay strip for decades: a 2019 High Ground feature counted 11 of the city's 14 gay bars on or near Madison back in 1998. Most of those are gone now, but Dru's Place and the Lamplighter are still on Madison, and The Pumping Station is a few blocks north on Poplar at the Crosstown edge.

Cooper-Young, further south in Midtown, is the neighbourhood people mean when they call Memphis queer-friendly. Tennessee's first rainbow crosswalk went down at Cooper and Young in 2019 and was finished on all four sides in 2022, and OUTMemphis has its community centre on South Cooper. Local TV has reported that the area has one of the highest concentrations of same-sex households in the Southeast. It's a place for coffee, dinner and a walk rather than bars, though Bar DKDC there runs a Monday drag night.

Downtown around Beale Street is where Pride happens and where most of the big hotels are. It's tourist-friendly and fine for a gay couple, but there are no gay bars downtown since Atomic Rose closed in 2024.

Bars and nightlife

The Pumping Station

The Pumping Station (1382 Poplar Ave) has been a gay bar since 2001 and is the city's men's, bear and leather bar. Its website lists Monday to Saturday 5pm to 3am and Sunday from 3pm, with themed nights: Pup Nite on the second Friday, Leather & Gear on the third Saturday and Underwear Night on the fourth Saturday. There's a patio and a pool table. Google reviews are mixed (3.9 from about 100), so expect a local bar rather than a polished club.

Dru's Place

Dru's Place (1474 Madison Ave), also known as Dru's Bar, is the other full-time gay bar and the one with the most going on. Its website calendar lists drag, karaoke and themed parties into late 2026, and it was in the Memphis Flyer's Best of Memphis 2024. Expect a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd, cheap beer and pizza. It's busiest on Friday and Saturday, when it stays open until 3am. Google rates it 4.5 from about 400 reviews.

The Lamplighter Lounge

The Lamplighter Lounge (1702 Madison Ave) is a small dive bar a few doors from Dru's. A March 2026 Focus Mid-South feature describes weekly drag on Mondays at 8pm, plus burlesque and karaoke. The owners say it isn't a gay bar but a place where queer and trans people are especially safe, and we've listed it as gay-friendly for that reason.

Drag nights and parties elsewhere

Out x Out lists Monday drag at Bar DKDC in Cooper-Young and Tuesday drag trivia at Growlers on Poplar. Both are mainstream bars, so go on the night. For women, the city has no lesbian bar. The nearest thing is Sapphic Memphis, a ticketed queer women's party that runs at 1884 Lounge inside Minglewood Hall. Check its Ticket Tailor page for the next date.

Out x Out also lists Rainbow City Live (3096 Lamar Ave), a Black LGBTQ+ party venue that promoter Anthony Curry Jr. opened at the end of 2024 after Club 616 closed. It runs one-off events announced on Facebook. We couldn't find a second source or a regular schedule, so check its social pages before you go.

Saunas and cruising

Memphis has no gay bathhouse or sauna, and we found no record of one in any current guide. Indoor cruising here means adult arcades. Fantasy Zone (2532 N Watkins St, formerly listed as Fantasy Warehouse IV) has video booths, and Out x Out lists the two Tammy's adult bookstores (Getwell Rd and E Brooks Rd) as arcades. Inz & Outz on Union Avenue is a gay-owned adult shop, not a cruising venue. We don't list outdoor cruising spots.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

• Atomic Rose (140 Lt George W Lee Ave, downtown): closed in October 2024 after five years (Fox13). It hasn't reopened as a gay bar.
• Club Spectrum / Club 616 (600 Marshall Ave): closed. Rainbow City Live on Lamar Ave took over its role.
• Mollie Fontaine Lounge (679 Adams Ave): according to the Daily Memphian in August 2026, it now opens only about once a quarter. Treat it as an occasional event space.
• One Block North (645 Marble Ave): some listings call it a Black LGBTQ+ dance club. The only directory that lists it says that history isn't backed up by local press or Memphis LGBTQ+ groups, and we found no recent activity.
• Backstreet: closed in 2010. Crossroads: closed, with no recent trace.

Pride and events

Memphis Pride Fest, run by Mid-South Pride, is normally held on the first weekend of June. In 2026 the parade left 4th and Beale at 11am on Saturday, June 6, followed by the festival at Robert Church Park, with organisers expecting up to 45,000 people (Action News 5). Pride weekend also brings the Big Gay Dance Party at Crosstown Theater. 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Mid-South Pride posts them on midsouthpride.org.

Tri-State Black Pride follows on the third weekend of June. The 2026 edition ran June 18–21, based at the Sheraton Memphis Downtown. The Outflix Film Festival has screened queer film at Malco Ridgeway each September. We couldn't confirm the 2026 dates, so check outflixfestival.org.

Through the year, the most reliable calendar is OUTMemphis's, which runs community dinners, support groups, trans meet-ups, youth nights and craft circles. Mid-South Pride holds open community meetings and a support group. See the events tab on this page for upcoming dates.

Community and health

• OUTMemphis: the LGBTQ+ community centre for the Mid-South, at 892 S Cooper St (walk-ins Tuesday to Saturday, 12–8pm), with a Youth Empowerment Center at 2055 Southern Ave. It's building a new $12M headquarters at 340 N Cleveland St, due in summer 2027.
• Friends For All: HIV services and prevention, formerly Friends For Life, now at 1548 Poplar Ave.
• The PAIGE: a Black LGBTQIA+ non-profit focused on health, leadership and community building.
• Friends of George's: the drag and LGBTQ+ theatre company that challenged Tennessee's 2023 drag law in court.
• CHOICES (1203 Poplar Ave) offers LGBTQ+ health services, including gender-affirming care for adults.

Practical tips

• You'll need a car or rideshare. Downtown, Midtown and the bars are spread out. Madison Ave, Cooper-Young and Beale are each walkable, but not from one to another.
• Bar hours are long. Both gay bars stay open until 3am, and weekends start late, so don't turn up at 9pm expecting a crowd.
• Bring ID. Dru's Place is 21+, and the bars check ID at the door.
• Where to stay: for the bars, stay in Midtown, for example the Holiday Inn Express Medical Center–Midtown on Union Ave or The James Lee House in Victorian Village. For Pride and Beale Street, choose downtown, where The Peabody and Moxy are both within walking distance of the parade.
• Night safety: use normal big-city caution late at night, especially walking to your car after 1am.

A few local words

Locals call the city "the 901", after its area code. "Midtown" means the whole area between downtown and East Memphis, including Overton Square, Cooper-Young and Madison Ave.
