Gay West Hollywood: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: West Hollywood is a separate small city, not an LA neighbourhood. Its gay scene is packed into about one mile of Santa Monica Boulevard, the Rainbow District. You can walk from The Abbey to two dozen other LGBTQ+ bars, clubs and shops without crossing a freeway, and there's something on every night of the week. What it doesn't have is a gay sauna: there's no bathhouse inside the city limits. The bars change hands and names quickly, so this guide lists what was open in October 2026 and what has closed or been renamed.

Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage is legal across the US, and in November 2024 California voters removed the old Prop 8 ban from the state constitution (Prop 3). State law (the Unruh Act and FEHA) bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity, California ID cards offer an "X" gender marker with self-certification since 2019, and West Hollywood scores 100 on the HRC Municipal Equality Index.

Where things are

West Hollywood covers about 1.9 square miles between Beverly Hills to the west and the City of Los Angeles to the east. It was incorporated in November 1984, when voters elected a council with a gay and lesbian majority, and in 1985 it opened a domestic partnership registry that is often cited as the first in the US.

The scene's spine is Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega and Doheny. On 7 April 2025 the City Council made "Rainbow District" the official name for this stretch as the city's LGBTQ+ cultural district. Older guides call it Boystown. The city never formally renamed that, but it uses the gender-neutral name now. The densest block is between San Vicente and Robertson, where the rainbow crosswalks have been permanent since 2012. A smaller cluster sits at the east end, around 8200-8300 Santa Monica Blvd (OR Bar, Hamburger Mary's, Circus of Books).

The Sunset Strip along the city's north edge is a different world: rock clubs like the Roxy, the Whisky a Go Go, the Viper Room and the Rainbow Bar & Grill, plus hotel rooftop bars. They're mainstream music venues, not gay bars.

The bars and clubs

The Abbey and The Chapel

The Abbey Food & Bar (692 N Robertson Blvd) is the scene's best-known venue: a big indoor-outdoor bar and restaurant that serves food from late morning and turns into a club at night, with drag brunch at weekends. Founder David Cooley sold it to Tristan Schukraft in a deal that closed in January 2024; the management stayed. Next door, The Chapel (696 N Robertson) opened in 2016 in the old Here Lounge space as its dance-floor sibling. Expect lines and ID checks on Friday and Saturday nights.

Clubs and drag

• Micky's (8857 Santa Monica Blvd), a two-storey club since 1989. Its own listings show go-go happy hours, Saturday "Brunch with the Divas", Sunday Latin drag brunch "Las Reinas", and Latin nights until 4am at weekends. The Hamburger Mary's owners bought it in October 2024 and kept it running as Micky's.
• Beaches Tropicana (8911 Santa Monica Blvd), a ticketed drag and performance club. The building was The Rage for decades and then Heart WeHo, and it took the Beaches Tropicana name in 2024.
• Beaches WeHo (8928 Santa Monica Blvd), the original Beaches across the street: a two-storey Cuban-Californian restaurant and lounge, with the WIPEOUT Sundays drag brunch.
• Revolver (8851 Santa Monica Blvd), a gay-owned video bar on the Larrabee corner since 1984, with weekly theme nights and pop singalongs.
• Mattie's (8900 Santa Monica Blvd), in the former Rocco's, which opened in May 2026. It's a restaurant, bar and late club with drag and a weekend drag brunch.
• The Wild (8945 Santa Monica Blvd), a jungle-themed cocktail bar in the former Saint Felix, with DJs, go-gos and Drag Race viewings.
• Hamburger Mary's (8288 Santa Monica Blvd), a drag-show burger bar with drag brunch and charity drag bingo.

Women's bar

SweetWater (8869 Santa Monica Blvd, at San Vicente) is a lesbian and sapphic bar and nightclub. It soft-launched at WeHo Pride in June 2026 and opened officially in July. It's the first dedicated women's bar in WeHo since The Palms closed in 2013. Reported hours are Wednesday to Sunday.

Neighbourhood bars, dives and sports bars

• Trunks (8809 Santa Monica Blvd), a long-running gay dive with pool tables, sports on TV and a 1pm-8pm happy hour.
• Mother Lode (8944 Santa Monica Blvd), a small old-school dive with a local crowd.
• The Bayou (8939 Santa Monica Blvd), a tiny New Orleans-themed dive with Cajun bites and no cover.
• Schmitty's (8737 Santa Monica Blvd), a talk-not-dance neighbourhood bar with a piano and a heated patio, opened in 2022 by the Fubar team.
• Roosterfish (8948 Santa Monica Blvd, at Robertson), a garden-patio bar in the old Pump space, licensed from the Venice original.
• Fiesta Cantina (8865 Santa Monica Blvd), a cheap Mexican bar with a street patio and Wednesday karaoke.
• Sports: Hi Tops (8933), GymBar (8919) and the queer-owned 33 Taps (8941, ex-Stache).
• OR Bar (8228 Santa Monica Blvd), an LGBTQ cocktail lounge in the old Gold Coast space at the east end.

Closed or changed: names you'll still see online

• The Rage (8911) closed in 2020. The space became Heart WeHo, which became Beaches Tropicana in 2024.
• Gold Coast (8228) closed in 2020 and is now OR Bar. Flaming Saddles (8811) also closed in 2020.
• Stache (8941) closed in July 2024 and is now 33 Taps. Rocco's (8900) is now Mattie's. Pump (8948) is now Roosterfish. Saint Felix (8945) is now The Wild.
• Fubar (7994 Santa Monica Blvd) has closed. Its owner is rebuilding the space under a new name that hadn't been announced as of October 2026.
• The Palms, WeHo's long-time lesbian bar, closed in 2013.
• Chi Chi LaRue's became Circus of Books West in 2022. LASC closed in 2019, and the Andrew Christian store closed in 2017.
• San Vicente Inn, once a gay resort, is now San Vicente Bungalows, a private members' club. It's no longer a hotel you can book.
• Vaseline Alley, the alley behind the east end of the strip, was a well-known cruising spot before the apps. It's history now, and we don't list it.

Shops

The strip's queer retail is mostly underwear, gear and adult boutiques. 665 Leather (8722) has made leather and fetish gear locally since 1998, though Google now shows a different shop at that address, so check its website before going. Circus of Books West (8861) and Circus of Books (8230) are gay-owned adult boutiques with zines and art. Block Party, at the Larrabee corner, sells Pride gear and gifts all year. Out of the Closet (8224) is AIDS Healthcare Foundation's thrift store, and its profits fund HIV care.

Saunas and cruising

There is no gay bathhouse in West Hollywood. The nearest are in the City of Los Angeles: North Hollywood Spa in the Valley, and Slammer, a cruise club on Beverly Blvd near Silver Lake. Flex, which some guides still place "in West Hollywood", closed in 2014. Prince Men's Spa, at the east edge of the strip, is a massage spa, not a bathhouse. We don't publish outdoor cruising spots.

Pride and events

• WeHo Pride is run by the City of West Hollywood, separately from LA Pride. The 2026 edition ran 5 to 7 June around West Hollywood Park (647 N San Vicente Blvd). It included a free street fair, the Women's Freedom Festival and Dyke March on the Saturday, a Sunday parade west along Santa Monica Blvd, and the ticketed OUTLOUD music festival. The 2027 dates have not been announced at the time of writing. It is usually the first weekend of June.
• LA Pride (Christopher Street West) left WeHo and now parades on Hollywood Boulevard. The 2026 parade was on 14 June.
• West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval: Saturday 31 October 2026, 6pm to 11pm. It's free and runs along Santa Monica Blvd from Doheny to La Cienega, with the main stage at San Vicente. Expect street closures from the afternoon.
• Lesbian & Queer Women Visibility Week is in late April, when the city flies the lesbian flag along the boulevard.

Worth a stop any day: STORIES: The AIDS Monument in West Hollywood Park, facing San Vicente Blvd. It's a field of bronze "Traces" by Daniel Tobin and opened in November 2025, and ONE Institute runs monthly docent tours. The LA LGBT Center's main campus and the ONE Archives are in the City of Los Angeles (Hollywood and near USC), not in WeHo.

Practical tips

• Airports: Burbank (BUR) is about 11 miles away and LAX about 13-14 miles. Both are 25-45 minutes by car depending on traffic. BUR is usually the easier airport.
• Getting around: there's no rail in WeHo. The Metro K Line extension through the city was approved in March 2026 but isn't expected before the late 2040s. Metro buses run along Santa Monica Blvd. The free WeHo PickUp shuttle runs along Santa Monica Blvd between La Brea and Robertson on Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm to 3am and Sundays from 2pm to 10pm.
• Nights: Thursday to Sunday are the big nights, and Sunday afternoons are busy with drag brunches. Bars close at 2am by state law. Some clubs keep the doors open later without alcohol.
• Where to stay: the Ramada Plaza (8585 Santa Monica Blvd) is the most LGBTQ-focused hotel (an IGLTA member) and is walkable to everything. Le Parc, Montrose and the Chamberlain are quieter all-suite options a few blocks off the boulevard. The Sunset Strip hotels (Andaz, Mondrian, Best Western Sunset Plaza, Sunset Marquis) are a 15-20 minute walk downhill.
• Safety: the boulevard is busy and well policed late at night. The usual city precautions apply, and as in any busy nightlife district, keep an eye on your drink. On Halloween and Pride weekend, the crowds and closures are huge.

A few words

"WeHo" is what everyone calls the city. "The strip" or "the boulevard" means Santa Monica Blvd, and "the Strip" with a capital S usually means the Sunset Strip. "Rainbow District" is the official name for the gay stretch, and "Boystown" is the old nickname.
