Opening Film: The Last First: Winter K2

The opening film of the Reykjavík International Film Festival 2026 is the epic film The Last First: Winter K2 by award-winning American director Amir Bar-Lev, which deals with the historic and fateful attempt by John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father and son duo Muhammad Ali Sadpara and Sajid Sadpara in 2021 to be the first to climb K2 in winter.
Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex, poignant, and impactful story that sheds light on the world of high-altitude mountaineering under the most difficult conditions and the culture that is changing there. The film deals with the expedition in 2021, when Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the father and son duo Ali and Sajid Sadpara from Pakistan set off with the aim of being the first to climb K2 in winter.
