International Coming Out Day
About the event
International Coming Out Day (ICOD) is celebrated annually on October 11. It aims to raise awareness for the LGBTQ+ community and encourage individuals to openly acknowledge their sexual orientation or gender identity. The day was founded in 1988 by American psychologists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary and coincides with the date of the first large-scale National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987. Coming Out Day emphasizes the importance of visibility and the personal and social act of coming out to combat prejudice and discrimination.
