About this place Lesbenberatung Berlin

Lesbenberatung Berlin ("Lesbian Advice Berlin") is the longest-running lesbian counselling centre in Europe and probably the world. Founded in 1982 by a Schöneberg feminist collective, it began as a two-nights-a-week drop-in service in a shared basement; by 1985 it had its own premises at Kulmer Straße 20a, where it has operated continuously ever since. The organisation's scope has widened over the decades to include trans, queer and non-binary counselling, refugee and asylum support, an elder-lesbian programme, and legal aid. It is a fully accredited counselling institution funded by the Berlin senate and by donations; all services are free to users. Roughly forty counsellors — a mix of paid staff and volunteers — see about 3,500 clients a year. Meeting rooms host a monthly women's café, a bimonthly trans and non-binary support group, and rotating cultural programming. The building itself is a small mid-block courtyard-facing apartment on the ground floor of a Wilhelmine-era block — three consulting rooms, a common room, a small library, a reception. Physically it's modest, which is deliberate: the counselling model is home-scaled, not clinical. Opening hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00-18:00, Friday 10:00-15:00. Drop-in visits are welcome for information; counselling appointments are by phone or email. Wheelchair accessible via the Kulmer Straße courtyard entrance. Located in the heart of Schöneberg's residential queer district, four blocks from Nollendorfplatz — an easy stop on the Berlin queer heritage walk that shows queer institutions as living infrastructure, not just markers of the past.
