gentleM on Kettwiger Straße is Essen's longest-running gay bar and one of the best-known LGBTQ+ spots in the Ruhr area. It mixes an easygoing bar early on with clubbier energy later, and its Thursday karaoke nights are a local fixture. The crowd is friendly and loyal, and it is a reliable first or last stop on a night out in the centre.
DIVINE Bar
DIVINE Bar opened on Viehofer Straße in 2024 as a café, bar and stage for drag, travesty and queer culture. Expect drag shows, drag brunches, karaoke, bingo and poetry slams across the week, all in an explicitly LGBTQ+ safe space. It has quickly become one of the most active queer venues in the city and is a good place to catch live performance rather than just a DJ.
Zum Pümpchen
Zum Pümpchen sits on Kopstadtplatz in the heart of the centre and is known for its famously long hours, opening from mid-morning until the early hours. It is more a cosy gay bar and café than a club, drawing a mix of regulars for coffee by day and drinks by night. Its central spot makes it an easy meeting point before heading elsewhere.
Drexx
Drexx, over in the Westviertel on Turmstraße, is Essen's gay fetish and cruise bar. Weekend nights bring dress-code parties and a basement cruising area, with a fetish-friendly door that fills up late on Fridays and Saturdays. It caters to a specific crowd and rounds out the city's men's scene alongside the nearby saunas.
Man Moviethek
Man Moviethek on Vereinstraße is Essen's gay adult cinema, with cabins, cruising areas and a sex shop, and it occasionally hosts parties. It is an adult venue rather than a bar for socialising, so it suits visitors specifically looking for that scene. As always, respect the house rules and the privacy of other guests.
Best Nights, Vibe, and What to Expect
Weekends, especially Friday and Saturday, are the busiest, with gentleM and Drexx at their liveliest and DIVINE Bar often running a show or party. For a more relaxed evening, weeknights at gentleM, DIVINE Bar or Zum Pümpchen are calmer and better for conversation. Across the board the crowd is welcoming and open-minded, and the venues take pride in being safe, inclusive spaces.
Because the scene is small, it pays to check each venue's social media for the current programme before you go, as party nights and drag events move around. Locals are generally happy to point you toward whatever is on that evening.

Getting There
Essen has an excellent public transport network of trams, buses and U-Bahn lines, and Essen Hauptbahnhof is the main hub. Most central venues are within walking distance of key stops. A day ticket (TagesTicket) is good value if you plan several trips in an evening.
Dress Code
Most of Essen's gay bars are casual and relaxed. The exception is Drexx, which runs dress-code and fetish nights at the weekend, so check ahead if you are heading there. Otherwise, wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Ages
The legal drinking age in Germany is 18, and clubs and adult venues will check ID. Some venues have specific age or entry policies, so check their website or socials in advance, particularly for late-night and fetish events.
