Gay Bars in Dundee: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

Dundee's industrial past is still visible, but it's now a city with a young, creative energy. Thousands of students and artists call it home, and that's reflected in its nightlife. On a Saturday night, walk along the Seagate, push open the door of Kandy, and you'll find a warm, welcoming spot with a pint of Scottish ale or local gin in hand, a drag queen on the mic, and locals laughing around the pool table. The scene is small, but it's got a lot of heart.

Legal in one line: Scotland has had same-sex marriage since 2014, and the legal drinking age is 18.

The gay bars

Everything's within a 10-minute walk in the city centre: Seagate to the east, St Andrew's Street and Ward Road in the middle, Crichton Street near the waterfront. You'll find six bars and clubs in three blocks.

Kandy Bar & Nightclub

Kandy, at 73–75 Seagate, is Dundee's main gay bar. It's open every day, with a pool table and karaoke. On weekends, it gets busy with DJs, drag shows, and bingo. Listed hours are 13:00 to midnight, and until 02:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. The staff's friendly, and the crowd's mixed. It's a bit dated, but that's part of its charm.

The Salty Dog

The Salty Dog, at 9 Crichton Street, is a small gay bar with a DJ playing everything from 80s rock to modern pop. It's a good spot for an early-evening drink, open from 14:00 on Saturdays, and closes at midnight.

The Glass Bucket

The Glass Bucket, at 22 St Andrew's Street, is a gay-friendly pub with quiz nights, karaoke, and open-mic events. It throws a popular party for Pride in June, open from early afternoon until midnight or 01:00 at weekends.

The new clubs

In summer 2025, Dundee got two LGBTQ+ nightclubs within a week of each other.

Rainbow Loft

Rainbow Loft opened on 23 August 2025 on the top floor of the Fat Sam's building on South Ward Road. It's a Saturday-night party with high-energy pop, a resident DJ, and drag guests. Check its Facebook page for the week's line-up.

Prism

Prism opened on 30 August 2025 in the former Pout nightclub on St Andrew's Street. It's open late on most nights, until about 03:00 at weekends, but it's a multi-genre club, so check @prism_dundee to see if the night's party is queer.

Drag: Bingo Wigs at Church

Church, at 15 Ward Road, hosts Bingo Wigs, Dundee's long-running weekly drag bingo, on Tuesday evenings from 19:00. Local queens perform between the bingo rounds. Check Church's listings, as some events get cancelled at short notice.

Closed or changed: Pout on St Andrew's Street is now Prism, and Club Tropicana is now Rainbow Loft.

A night out, the Dundee way

Start with an early drink at The Salty Dog, move to Kandy for karaoke and the drag show, then head up to Rainbow Loft or Prism to dance until three. Next morning, walk it off along the waterfront past the V&A, and grab a peh (a Scotch pie) or a bridie (a pastry filled with mince and onion) at Clark's Bakery on Annfield Street – it's open 24 hours.

Practical tips

    • Getting there: Dundee's roughly 1¼ to 1½ hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow by train, and the station's next to the V&A.
    • Getting around: the centre's compact, so you won't need a taxi between bars.
    • Weather: bring a jacket – it's chilly, even in summer.
    • Apps: Grindr's the main app.
    • Bigger scene: Glasgow and Edinburgh are an easy train ride away.

    Dundee Pride

Dundee Pride closes Scotland's Pride Month at the end of June. In 2026, it was on Saturday 27 June: a march from the Steeple Church to a Pride Village in Slessor Gardens, headlined by Drag Race UK winner Danny Beard. It's confirmed for 2027.
