Sargon Boulus: Knife Sharpener
On the occasion of the release of the poetry collection Knife Sharpener (Hirondelle, 2026, trans. Gabriela Babnik Outtara), by Sargon Boulus, one of the most important contemporary Iraqi or Arab poets, writer Said Khatibi and the collection's editor Muani Sinanovć will discuss Boulus's life, poetic work, and his place in contemporary Arab literature. Boulus's poems in Slovenian are interpreted by Gabriela Babnik Ouattara, and in English by Sinja Ouattara.
The evening will be dedicated to the poetry of Sargon Boulus (1944–2007), one of the most important contemporary Iraqi or Arab poets, whose poems traverse languages, cities, and memories, opening questions of exile, historical turning points, internal displacement, and human vulnerability. His poems are inhabited by travelers, exiles, cities, and shadows of the past, through which the poet reflects on identity, loss, love, and human destiny. His voice remains one of the most original and influential in contemporary Arab literature, and his poetry continues to speak to readers worldwide with its humanity, intellectual breadth, and exceptional lyrical power.
