Jule Flierl: The State in Your Mouth

The State in Your Mouth – fragments of the GDR underground in art and performance
Lecture Performance
Jule Flierl will attempt to partially digest and metabolize the works of Gabi Stötzer, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeld, and others through salivation and chewing. The lecture performance represents an intergenerational attempt to calibrate the gaze towards the obscure history of dissident art in the GDR, which cannot be experienced without questioning one's own tools of interpretation. Jule Flierl tries to step out of the competitive logic of the East-West dichotomy; she treats the work of underground female artists from the GDR as a fertile set of tools for dealing with today's increasingly authoritarian conditions in Germany and beyond.
