Sant Josep de sa Talaia: Ibiza's Gay Beaches and a Quieter Base

Sant Josep de sa Talaia is Ibiza's largest municipality, spreading across the whole southwest of the island. It is mostly rural and residential, but it quietly holds some of Ibiza's most important LGBTQ+ landmarks: the flagship gay beach of Es Cavallet and its buzzy neighbour Platja de ses Salines both sit within its boundaries. There is no gay village or dedicated nightlife strip here; the appeal is beaches, nature and a calmer place to stay, with Ibiza Town's bars and clubs a short drive away.

Es Cavallet: Ibiza's Gay Beach

Es Cavallet, at the island's southern tip inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, is Ibiza's original nudist beach and its established gay beach. The gay and nudist section is toward the southern end, furthest from the main car park. Behind the sand, the pine-and-juniper dunes have long been known as a cruising area; the beach lies within a protected natural park, so keep to marked paths and respect the environment and other visitors. For years the gay social heart of the beach was the beach club Chiringay, but it closed permanently in June 2026 after 45 years following dune-restoration enforcement in the park. The neighbouring chiringuitos El Chiringuito Es Cavallet and La Escollera continue to operate as mainstream beach restaurants.

Platja de ses Salines and Sa Trinxa

Immediately south of Es Cavallet, Platja de ses Salines is a long golden bay with a fashionable, mixed and very gay-friendly crowd. At its far end sits Sa Trinxa, a legendary Balearic-beat beach bar that has drawn a bohemian, LGBTQ-friendly crowd since the 1990s, with barefoot sunset sessions on the sand. Es Cavallet and Ses Salines are usually visited together; the two beaches are the reason many gay travellers make the trip into Sant Josep at all.

Where to Stay

The stand-out gay-popular address in the municipality is AxelBeach Ibiza, part of the Axel Hotels "heterofriendly" adults-only brand, on the Cala de Bou seafront in San Antonio Bay. Beyond that, accommodation here is mostly mainstream: rural agroturismos, boutique hotels and holiday villas inland around Sant Josep village, plus a cluster of resort hotels along the San Antonio Bay coast (Cala de Bou, Port des Torrent, Cala Tarida). Many LGBTQ+ visitors still base themselves in Ibiza Town for the nightlife and day-trip out to the beaches, but staying in Sant Josep buys peace, nature and easy beach access.

Other Beaches and Natural Attractions

Sant Josep's western coast holds some of Ibiza's most photographed beaches. Cala Conta (Comte) is famous for turquoise water and sunset views; Cala Bassa is a broad, family-friendly bay; and Cala d'Hort looks straight out at the mythical islet of Es Vedrà. These draw a mixed rather than specifically LGBTQ+ crowd, but they are stunning and easily reached by car. Inland, the Ses Salines salt pans and the Sa Talaia hill (the island's highest point) reward walkers and photographers.

Nightlife

Sant Josep has no dedicated gay nightlife of its own. Ibiza's gay bars and clubs are concentrated in Ibiza Town's old quarter, around Sa Penya and Carrer de la Mare de Deu (Calle de la Virgen), roughly a 20-minute drive east. Playa d'en Bossa, on the municipality's eastern edge, hosts giant mainstream clubs (Ushuaia, Hi Ibiza) that are gay-popular but not gay-specific. For a dedicated gay night out, plan on Ibiza Town.

Pride and Events

Ibiza Pride is held in June and is centred on Ibiza Town, not Sant Josep. In 2026 it runs 6-13 June, with the main parade on Saturday 13 June marching through Ibiza Town to the port. Some satellite events take place elsewhere on the island, but Sant Josep does not host its own Pride. Throughout the summer the island's gay social calendar plays out on Es Cavallet and Ses Salines by day and in Ibiza Town by night.

Getting Around

A rental car is by far the most practical way to explore Sant Josep and reach the beaches; public buses connect the main resorts, Ibiza Town and the airport but run less frequently to the smaller coves. Ibiza Airport sits on the municipality's edge, only minutes from Es Cavallet and Ses Salines. Taxis are available but can be scarce and pricey in peak season.

Safety

Spain is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in the world, with full marriage equality and strong legal protections, and Ibiza is relaxed and welcoming. Normal beach and nightlife precautions apply: watch your belongings on busy beaches, stay hydrated, and if you visit the dunes use common sense and respect the protected environment. Attitudes across Sant Josep, from the resorts to the rural interior, are easy-going and accepting.

Bottom Line

Sant Josep de sa Talaia is the quiet municipality that happens to contain Ibiza's gay beaches. Come for Es Cavallet and Ses Salines, stay at AxelBeach Ibiza or a peaceful rural base, and hop into Ibiza Town when you want bars and clubs. It is not a nightlife destination in itself, but for sun, sea and a laid-back gay beach day it is the heart of the action.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Sant Josep is a good base for LGBTQ+ travelers seeking a quieter, more nature-oriented experience. Its strategic location allows easy access to Ibiza's broader LGBTQ+ offerings.

No, Sant Josep de sa Talaia does not have a concentrated gay district. The municipality is predominantly rural with scattered hamlets and coastal areas.

Es Cavallet is Ibiza's flagship gay and nudist beach and lies within the Sant Josep municipality, in the Ses Salines Natural Park at the island's southern tip; the gay section is toward its southern end, and the dunes behind it are a long-standing cruising area. The adjacent Platja de ses Salines, home to the iconic beach bar Sa Trinxa, draws a fashionable, gay-friendly mixed crowd. Cala Conta and Cala d'Hort (with its Es Vedra views) are also beautiful and worth visiting, though with a mixed rather than specifically LGBTQ+ crowd.

Sant Josep de sa Talaia has no dedicated LGBTQ+ nightlife of its own. The island's gay bars and clubs are in Ibiza Town's old quarter (around Carrer de la Mare de Deu), about a 20-minute drive away. By day the gay scene centres on Es Cavallet and Ses Salines beaches; Sa Trinxa beach bar is a gay-friendly institution there, while the long-running gay beach club Chiringay closed in 2026. The gay-popular AxelBeach Ibiza hotel is the main LGBTQ+ address in the municipality.

Ibiza Town is the island's primary urban hub and offers more dedicated LGBTQ+ venues and nightlife compared to Sant Josep. Sant Josep is more focused on natural areas and a relaxed atmosphere.

The atmosphere in Sant Josep de sa Talaia is generally relaxed and accepting, particularly in its coastal areas and beaches. LGBTQ+ visitors and families are drawn to its natural beauty and more laid-back vibe.
