Last verified: November 2026. Lyon has no gay hotel and no men-only guesthouse inside the city in 2026. Every hotel in our listings is a mainstream, gay-friendly property. Some older directories call Hôtel Elysée gay, but it is simply a decent central hotel. What Lyon does have is a compact scene. Queen Club, L Bar, both gay saunas, two men-only cruising clubs and the LGBTI+ centre are all within about 400 m of Place des Terreaux, at the foot of the Croix-Rousse slopes in the 1st arrondissement. The only gay-only stays we could find are small B&Bs in the countryside around Lyon. Gay directories advertise them, but we could not check them against recent reviews. So the question is not "which gay hotel" but which side of Cordeliers you sleep on, and how you get home from Rue Terme at 4 am. This guide covers walking times from each hotel, the tourist tax, the 2026 Pride split and what it means for 2027, Fête des Lumières (the week every Lyon hotel sells out), night transport and health.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Lyon's gay scene is not one street but a small pocket of them. Start at Place des Terreaux and go north up Rue Terme and Rue Constantine to Rue Romarin and Rue des Capucins. That covers most of it:

It Bar is a few minutes east, at the foot of Montée Saint-Sébastien, which climbs steeply into the Croix-Rousse slopes. Two outliers matter: La Chapelle Café on Quai des Célestins, facing the Saône and Fourvière, and the bear bar XS Bar on Rue Claudia, down by Perrache.

The walkable zone is the Presqu'île north of Place Bellecour. From Cordeliers metro you are 8–10 minutes from Rue Terme on the flat; from Bellecour, 15–18. The main route is Rue de la République, which is pedestrianised and lit all the way from Bellecour to the Opéra. Most people walk home that way. Vieux Lyon, across the Saône, works if you don't mind the footbridges. Anything across the Rhône (3rd, 6th and 7th arrondissements) is more than 20 minutes away, and from Confluence you need a taxi.

Terreaux and the foot of the slopes (1st)

Only one hotel in our listings is right on the scene. Grand Hôtel des Terreaux at 16 Rue Lanterne is 64 m from Queen Club in our listings, so 1–2 minutes. L Bar is 2–4 minutes away, Oasis and DoubleSide 3–5, Le Trou 4–6, Premier Sous-Sol 5–7 and the LGBTI+ centre about 5. Some older descriptions put it in Vieux Lyon, but it is on the Presqu'île side, between the Saône quays and the Hôtel de Ville. The catch is noise. Rue Lanterne has bar terraces (Le Broc Bar is next door at number 20). Queen Club opens Thursday to Sunday from 11 pm and closes around 5 am, so the street is busy at hours when you may want to sleep. Ask for a room away from the street. At 3 am the flat streets around Place des Terreaux are fine. The stairs and steep lanes up the slopes are emptier, and phone snatching is more of a worry there than violence.

Cordeliers and the northern Presqu'île (2nd)

Ten minutes south, the streets around Cordeliers are busy by day and quieter at night, which makes them a good compromise. Hotel Silky by HappyCulture on Place Francisque Régaud is 5–7 minutes from It Bar, 7–9 from Queen Club and 9–11 from both DoubleSide and La Chapelle. It rates about 4.3 on Google from more than 1,200 reviews. Hotel de Bretagne at 10 Rue Dubois is the closest of the cheap options: 4–6 minutes to It Bar, 6–7 to Queen Club and 8–9 to the saunas. But it averages 2.6 from about 360 Google reviews, so read the last three months of reviews before booking. Don't confuse this Rue Dubois with Rue Commandant Dubois in the 3rd. The night buses all meet at Cordeliers, which helps if you are going further.

Célestins, Jacobins and Rue Mercière (2nd)

This is the Presqu'île most visitors picture: theatre squares, restaurant terraces and shopping streets. It is calm after midnight, and every hotel here is a flat walk home.

    • Hôtel des Artistes is a small 3-star on Place des Célestins, beside the theatre. It is 5–6 minutes from La Chapelle Café and 12–14 from Queen Club. It scores about 4.6 from roughly 900 reviews, and gay directories regularly recommend it to couples.
    • Citadines Presqu'Ile Lyon is on Rue Thomassin, just off Rue Mercière. It is 6–7 minutes from La Chapelle and 9–11 from Queen Club, and the studios with kitchenettes suit a week-long stay.
    • Hôtel Elysée, at 92 Rue du Président Édouard Herriot, is 8–9 minutes from La Chapelle and 13–15 from Queen Club.
    • The Carlton on Rue Jussieu, by Place des Jacobins, is 10 minutes from It Bar, 12–14 from Queen Club and 11–13 from La Chapelle.

Rue Mercière, including Les Infidèles at number 57, is loud until about midnight and then empties.

    Vieux Lyon (5th)

Cour des Loges on Rue du Bœuf, now marketed under Radisson Collection, is the obvious luxury choice. Unexpectedly, it is also the closest hotel in our listings to La Chapelle Café: 4–6 minutes over the Passerelle du Palais de Justice. Queen Club is 13–15 minutes away via Pont La Feuillée and Rue d'Algérie, and the saunas are 16–18. The lanes of Saint-Jean are cobbled, narrow and very quiet after the bouchons close. They are not dangerous, but they are dark, and the Saône quays are the better-lit way back.

Across the Rhône: Guillotière, Saxe and the 3rd

SLO Hostel Lyon Saxe on Rue Bonnefoi scores about 4.4 from roughly 1,350 reviews. It is 26–29 minutes on foot from Queen Club and 23–26 from XS Bar. The nearest venue in our listings is the gay-friendly Livestation DIY, 7–9 minutes away. NOCNOC Lyon - Immeuble Dubois is a building of serviced apartments with code check-in on Rue Commandant Dubois. It is 19–21 minutes from both Queen Club and La Chapelle. Both are fine places to sleep and cheaper than the Presqu'île. The weak point is the walk home through Guillotière. Place Gabriel-Péri and the streets around it are lively but rough at 3 am. Stay on the main bridges (Pont Lafayette, Pont de la Guillotière), keep your phone out of sight, or take the metro while it runs.

    Confluence (2nd, southern tip)

MOB Hotel Lyon Confluence on Quai Rambaud is a design hotel in a redeveloped district that goes quiet at night. It is 12–14 minutes from Le Sucre, the rooftop club on La Sucrière, and 19–22 from XS Bar, but 45–50 minutes from Queen Club. Take a taxi back from Terreaux, or catch tram T1 from Perrache before it stops for the night.

    Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Inside Lyon, there are none. We found no hotel in the city that is openly gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional in 2026. Some older lists call Hôtel Elysée a gay hotel. It is a mainstream hotel that welcomes gay guests like every other property in this guide. The gay travel sites that recommend Cour des Loges and Hôtel des Artistes recommend them as gay-friendly, not gay-run.

Outside the city, the French directory Gay Sejour lists a handful of gay-only chambres d'hôtes. None is in our listings, and we could not check any of them against 2025–2026 reviews, so confirm each one before booking:

    • Villa Gecko, near Villefranche-sur-Saône to the north: advertised as gay-only and naturist, with two rooms. It is the only clothing-optional gay stay we found near Lyon.
    • La Maison (Bruno): advertised as gay-only. We could not confirm its location or whether it is still open.
    • An unnamed gay-only B&B with three rooms and a jacuzzi, between Lyon and Grenoble: we could not find a name for it.
    • Maison Pat & Dan, about 5 km north-west of Lyon: gay-friendly rather than gay-only, with a naturist pool that it also rents to non-guests in the afternoon.
    • La Guylhostière: a gay-only room in a central apartment overlooking the Rhône near Pont de la Guillotière, promoted around 2023. We found nothing recent, so it may have closed.

Lyon's men-only spaces are not hotels. DoubleSide is a men-only sauna of 750 m² on Rue Constantine, open since 2000. It runs a naturist night on Wednesdays, a youth night on Thursdays and a bears day on the third Saturday of each month. Oasis Club Sauna also runs evenings open to trans people, cross-dressers and bi men. Le Trou and Premier Sous-Sol are men-only cruising clubs. If you want a gay-only space for the night, these are it, and you walk back to a mainstream hotel afterwards.

    Booking rules that bite

Visitors. French hotels do not charge "joiner fees", and nobody will ask why two men want one bed. What matters is how many people are booked. A room booked for one adult covers one person's tourist tax and often one breakfast. If a second adult stays, the hotel can add their tax and any other per-person charges. The simple fix is to book for two adults on the booking site, even if you arrive alone. Apartments with code entry (NOCNOC, and to a lesser extent Citadines) are stricter about who is registered than hotels with a reception desk, because their house rules limit how many people can stay in each unit.

ID. Non-French guests must fill in a short police registration form (fiche individuelle de police) at check-in. Most hotels complete it from your passport. Carry ID, because you may be asked to show it.

Tourist tax. The Métropole de Lyon charges taxe de séjour per adult per night, plus a 10% departmental surcharge. The 2026 rates, including the surcharge:

    • Palaces: €5.39
    • 5-star: €3.96
    • 4-star: €2.86
    • 3-star: €1.87
    • 2-star: €1.10
    • 1-star, B&Bs and hostels: €0.88

Unclassified accommodation (most short-let flats and some serviced apartments) pays 5% of the pre-tax nightly price per person, plus the 10% surcharge, capped at €5.39 per person per night. Under-18s are exempt. Hotels usually collect it at the desk, even if you prepaid the room.

No resort fees, but expect a hold on your card at check-in, and self check-in apartments may take a separate deposit. Non-refundable rates on the Presqu'île are usually much cheaper. For Fête des Lumières and Pride weekends, check for minimum-stay conditions before paying.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Fête des Lumières, 5–8 December 2026

This isn't a gay event, but it decides whether you get a room. The city's official site confirms Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026. Light installations fill the Presqu'île, Terreaux and Vieux Lyon, streets close to traffic, and the centre is packed in the evenings. With a month to go, Presqu'île rooms will be scarce and expensive. If you still need one, look across the Rhône (NOCNOC, SLO) or in Confluence and use the metro. The bars on Rue Terme are packed that weekend. If you want Lyon's gay scene without the crowds, avoid early December.

    Écrans Mixtes, 3–11 March 2027

Lyon's LGBTQI+ film festival has run since 2011. The 2026 edition had around 100 screenings at 30 venues across greater Lyon, so there is no single district to book. The Presqu'île is the practical base, because most cinemas are a short metro ride away. Early March is low season, and rooms are easy to find.

Lyon Pride (Marche des Fiertés), 2027 date not announced as of November 2026

Pride in 2026 was messy, and that matters for planning 2027. After a vote in February 2026, the Centre LGBTI+ de Lyon took over the main march from the Collectif Fiertés en Lutte (CFL), and the city ended up with two Prides.

    • The Centre LGBTI+ march marked 30 years of Lyon Pride on 11 July. It started at 1 pm from Place Maréchal-Lyautey in the 6th and ended with an open-air party from 7 pm to 11 pm.
    • The CFL march was planned for 27 June but postponed because of heatwaves. It finally set off from Gratte-Ciel in Villeurbanne on Saturday 10 October.

Neither organiser has published a 2027 date, so treat any "June 2027" date on travel sites as a guess. Whichever march you choose, book on the Presqu'île near Terreaux. Place Maréchal-Lyautey is a 10–13 minute walk over Pont Morand, and the after-parties end up on Rue Terme. Book once a date is announced, as Pride weekend does not sell out the city the way Fête des Lumières does.

Bears and the rest of the year

Lyon has no bear week. Bears meet at XS Bar and at DoubleSide's bears day on the third Saturday of each month. A gay ski week in Alpe d'Huez is advertised for March 2027, and people usually fly into Lyon-Saint-Exupéry for it. Confirm the dates with the organiser.

Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. The Rhônexpress tram runs from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry to Part-Dieu in about 30 minutes, from roughly 4.25 am to midnight. In 2026 a single ticket costs about €16 online or €17.10 from the machine (about US$18–20). From Part-Dieu, take metro B to Charpennes, then line A to Hôtel de Ville–Louis Pradel for Terreaux, or take a 10–15 minute taxi. A taxi straight from the airport to the Presqu'île costs about €60–80 (unverified, and more at night). If you land after midnight, a taxi or app car is your only option.

From the bars. The metro runs until about 12.30 am Sunday to Thursday, and until about 2 am on Friday and Saturday nights. Hôtel de Ville–Louis Pradel (lines A and C) is 2–3 minutes from Rue Terme, and Cordeliers (line A) is the next stop south. Since September 2025 there have been four Pleine Lune night bus lines, all meeting at Cordeliers. They cover Gerland, Confluence, the 7th, the Cité Internationale and the university campuses. Check tcl.fr for which nights each one runs. After that, use Uber, Bolt or Heetch, or the taxi rank at Hôtel de Ville or Cordeliers. When Queen Club closes at 5 am there is a short queue for cars, and walking to Cordeliers first often gets you one faster.

Walking. Rue de la République and the Saône quays are the well-lit routes. Avoid the empty stairs of the Croix-Rousse slopes alone at night. If you are heading to Guillotière, avoid Place Gabriel-Péri. Do not walk from Terreaux to Confluence. The Berges du Rhône are pleasant by day but become a cruising area after dark, so bear that in mind if you use them as a shortcut.

Health, safety and the law

PrEP, PEP and testing. The CeGIDD (free sexual health clinic) at Hôpital Édouard Herriot is at 5 Place d'Arsonval, 69003 (metro D, Grange Blanche). It offers free HIV and STI testing, booked online, and PrEP appointments by phone on +33 4 72 11 62 06. In 2026 it is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30 am to 7 pm, and Wednesday and Friday 8.30 am to 4 pm. For PEP after a risk, go there during opening hours, or to any hospital emergency department (urgences) at any time. You need to start within 48 hours, and sooner is better. Any doctor in France can prescribe PrEP. The Centre LGBTI+ at 19 Rue des Capucins can point you to community testing and support groups.

Dating apps. France has a real problem with homophobic ambushes (guets-apens) set up through dating apps. According to the government, associations recorded one every four days in 2024. In March 2026, Grindr and other apps signed a prevention charter with the state. We found no reports of a Lyon case in 2025–2026, but the pattern is national: a date at an unfamiliar flat or a car park, then robbery or assault. Meet first in a bar, ideally on Rue Terme. Don't go to an address in the outer suburbs that someone sends you at 2 am, and share your location with a friend. Report incidents to the police; SOS homophobie supports victims.

Drugs. All recreational drugs are illegal in France, including cannabis and the usual chemsex drugs. Cannabis possession is often punished with an on-the-spot fine of at least €200, which counts as a criminal offence and goes on record. Hotels do call the police over drugs in rooms. If someone collapses, call 15 (SAMU) or 112. The emergency services are there to treat the person, not to look for drugs.

Smoking. Smoking is banned inside hotels, bars and clubs. Since July 2025 it is also banned in public parks and gardens, at bus shelters and near schools, with a €135 fine. Smoking in your room usually brings a cleaning charge.

Public sex. Police mostly tolerate cruising at the Berges du Rhône and the Parc de la Tête d'Or, but sexual exposure in public is a criminal offence. That is what the clubs are for. Same-sex couples are protected by law whether married or not, and holding hands on the Presqu'île draws no attention.

Three picks

Budget: SLO Hostel Lyon Saxe. Well reviewed, with private rooms. Metro D from Saxe-Gambetta gets you to the Presqu'île in minutes while it runs. Choose it over Hotel de Bretagne, unless being 6 minutes from Queen Club matters more to you than a 2.6 review score.

Mid-range: Grand Hôtel des Terreaux. The only hotel in our listings that is truly on the doorstep of the scene: 1–2 minutes from Queen Club and 3–5 from both saunas. Ask for a room that doesn't face Rue Lanterne.

Splurge: Cour des Loges. Renaissance buildings around a glass-roofed courtyard, with a spa and a small pool. La Chapelle Café's terrace is 4–6 minutes away across the footbridge. Allow 15 minutes on foot, or take a taxi, for Terreaux.
