The honest summary: Santorini has no gay bar, no gay sauna and no gay neighbourhood. Come for the caldera, the wine and a couple's holiday, and treat the few gay-friendly bars in Fira as a bonus. If you want a gay scene, take the ferry to Mykonos, or stay in Athens on the way.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage and joint adoption have been legal in Greece since February 2024 (Law 5089/2024), decriminalisation dates from 1951, and legal gender recognition from 2017. Surrogacy isn't open to male couples.
What the scene actually is
Queer in the World says plainly that the island has no gay saunas or cruise clubs, and The Gay Passport says most of its listed bars aren't primarily gay spots. Earlier versions of this page talked about gay-friendly bars and beach clubs in Kamari and a growing scene; we found no source for any of that. What exists is a short list of mainstream places that gay travel guides have listed for years. The evidence for most is several years old, so it's a guide to where you're likely to feel comfortable, not a guarantee of a gay crowd.
Bars in Fira
Everything is walkable in Fira, around Erythrou Stavrou, known locally as Bar Street, and the streets on the caldera side.
- Tropical Bar, on Marinatou: misterb&b calls it one of the most gay-friendly places on the island. It's small, with a balcony over the caldera. The Gay Passport gives 11:00 to 03:00; we couldn't confirm 2026 hours.
- Crystal Cocktail Bar: a two-level lounge with volcano views, listed by Travel Gay and The Gay Passport. Confirm the location by phone first.
- Murphy's Bar, on Erythrou Stavrou since 1999: Travel Gay lists it as gay-friendly, but its own site calls it a mainstream nightclub. Expect a loud tourist party. Queer in the World gives a season of late March to Halloween.
- Vlychada, on the south coast about 11 km from Fira, sits under pale eroded cliffs. Travel Gay and Queer in the World name it as the beach gay visitors favour.
- Koloumbos, on the north-east coast near Oia, is quieter, with no facilities. Travel Gay and Queer in the World list it as popular with gay visitors, and Greek beach guides call it a nudists' favourite.
- Fira is the practical base if you want to walk to the bars: Mythical Blue or Aperto Suites.
- Firostefani and Imerovigli are caldera villages just north of Fira, quieter at night: Cliff Side Suites, Alta Vista, Agave, Above Blue.
- Oia is the sunset postcard and the priciest, about 14 km from Fira: hom Santorini.
- Pyrgos, Megalochori and Vothonas are inland or southern villages, better for a calm trip with a car: Valsamo Suites, Art Hotel, Grand View, Acave.
- Karterados and Mesaria are cheaper, with no caldera view: Nikos Hotel, Villa Danezis, NOŪS.
- Season: many hotels, restaurants and tour operators close from about November to March. Don't count on any bar being open then.
- Getting here: the airport (JTR) is about 6 km from Fira. KTEL buses take about 25 minutes when they run, and taxis are expensive, with quotes of €45–60. Ferries to Piraeus take about 4 to 6 hours and to Mykonos from about 2 hours in summer. Check winter timetables, which we couldn't confirm.
- Crowds: Greece capped cruise arrivals at 8,000 passengers a day and allocated fewer ship calls for 2026 (595 against 728 in 2025), but Oia at sunset is still packed in summer. Visit late May or early October if you can.
- Earthquakes: a swarm from late January 2025 emptied much of the island for weeks. Authorities declared it safe in March 2025. Note the assembly points and keep away from cliff edges and bases.
- Steps: caldera hotels often mean a lot of stairs with luggage. Ask about porters before booking.
- Sexual health: PrEP has been free in Greece since May 2025 through hospital pharmacies in major cities, and Athens Checkpoint offers community HIV testing. We couldn't confirm either service on Santorini, so sort it out in Athens. For emergencies, call 112.
- Affection in public: tourist areas are used to same-sex couples. Villages are more conservative, so read the room. Law 4285/2014 makes incitement to hatred over sexual orientation or gender identity a crime.
- Koo Club and Enigma: Queer in the World (2023) lists them, and calls Koo a gay bar in Oia, while a Greek nightlife guide places Koo on Bar Street in Fira. We found no second gay source for either.
- Gary's Bar (Fira): a real cocktail bar, once listed here as LGBTQ+ friendly. We found no guide or review that supports that, so it's off the list.
- Theros at Eros Beach: reported moved, as above.
Out by the coast, Theros Wave Bar is a daytime beach bar listed as gay-friendly. Older guides put it at Eros Beach and a newer listing says it moved to Mesa Pigadia in Akrotiri, so check before you drive.

Beaches
Santorini's beaches are dark volcanic sand and pebbles, and none is officially gay. Two come up repeatedly:
Some nudity happens at both, but we couldn't find an official nudist designation, and Greek public-indecency law still applies. Cover up if asked. Rockfall is a real risk: keep away from the base of the cliffs. Red Beach was closed after a rockfall in February 2025, and we couldn't confirm that it has reopened. Follow the signs on site. Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari are good mainstream beaches, with no gay-specific claim we could verify.
Where to stay
Greek law protects same-sex couples, but very few hotels here have any real LGBTQ+ record. The two that do are linked to one event: Santorini Sky, the private-villa resort above Pyrgos, and its partner Voreina Gallery Suites in Pyrgos village, hosted VACAYA's guests for Pride in August 2022. Every other hotel on our list is a mainstream property, and its page says so.

Pride and events
There's no annual Santorini Pride that we could find. The only documented one was the VACAYA event of 25–28 August 2022, reported by GTP. Our previous version said Pride happens every June; that was wrong. For a Pride in Greece, look to Athens in June (2027 date not announced at the time of writing) or Thessaloniki, and to the XLSIOR festival on Mykonos in August.
Gay cruises do call here. Atlantis's Greek Isles sailing on Virgin's Scarlet Lady, 22–29 August 2027 from Athens, lists Santorini among its ports, according to the 2027 cruise round-ups on OutXOut and GayCities. Olivia runs a women's Greek Isles cruise from 2 October 2027.

FAQ
Is there a gay bar on Santorini?
No. Tropical Bar in Fira is the place gay guides mention most, but it isn't a gay bar.
Is Santorini or Mykonos better for gay travellers?
Mykonos if you want gay bars and parties. Santorini if you want views and a quiet couple's trip. The ferry takes from about 2 hours in summer, so you can do both.
Is there a gay beach?
Not officially. Gay guides point to Vlychada and Koloumbos.
Can a same-sex couple get married here?
Greek civil marriage has been open to same-sex couples since February 2024. GayCities has reported on a same-sex wedding on the island. Ask the municipality what non-resident couples need to provide.
Last verified: November 2026. Most gay-guide listings here date from 2023 or are undated, so confirm bar hours and locations locally.
