Soteorpo – Theater Visit Sat 11/14 at 4 PM – Teatteri Avoimet ovet
About the event
Soteorpo is a social satire with black humor about victims of memory loss.
Markku (Heikki Kujanpää) and Pirjo (Ella Pyhältö) are looking forward to their retirement days full of shared plans. However, everyday life begins to crumble when Pirjo notices worrying changes in Markku's behavior: forgetfulness, sudden outbursts of emotion, and uncontrolled actions. As the marital crisis escalates, Markku receives an Alzheimer's diagnosis, and Pirjo's life changes irrevocably. She becomes a caregiver.
Based on Minna Lindgren's novel of the same name, Soteorpo is a humorous but merciless depiction of the effects of memory loss on a marriage and an individual's position in society. The harshness of everyday life drives the couple further away from other people. The performance also highlights the functionality of the care system and the absurdity of bureaucracy: what happens when systems only work on paper?
The stage work utilizes documentary material from the everyday lives of real caregivers. The material was collected through the Sairaan hyvä project in cooperation with Omaishoitajaliitto and Muistiliitto.
