The honest summary: Milwaukee (about 562,000 people, Census 2025 estimate) has something many bigger US cities have lost: a real, walkable gay bar district. Eight LGBTQ+ bars sit within a few blocks of each other in Walker's Point, just south of downtown, and Visit Milwaukee and the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project both list all eight as open in 2026. There's no bathhouse and no gay hotel, and the city's oldest bar closed in 2025. Come in June for PrideFest on the lakefront, or any Friday or Saturday for the 2nd Street bar crawl.
Legal in one line: In 1982 Wisconsin became the first US state to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation, and same-sex marriage has been legal since October 2014. State law still doesn't cover gender identity, but the City of Milwaukee's ordinance does. In March 2026 Governor Evers vetoed all five anti-trans bills the legislature passed. The age of consent is 18.
Walker's Point: the Fruit Loop
Almost all of gay Milwaukee happens in Walker's Point, on and around South 2nd Street between National and Greenfield Avenues. Locals call the bar loop the "Fruit Loop". The Pride Parade starts here, and in May 2026 the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center moved back to the neighbourhood, to 161 S 1st St. It had first opened in Walker's Point in 1998. Everything below is a short walk from 2nd and National.
La Cage (801 S 2nd St) is the big one: a nightclub with a bar side, a dance floor and drag shows. It was briefly renamed LVL in 2018 and went back to La Cage in 2019. It's busiest late on Fridays and Saturdays.
Fluid (819 S 2nd St), across the street, is a neighbourhood cocktail bar with a back patio and fire pit.
Walker's Pint (818 S 2nd St) is one of the few lesbian bars left in the US. The crowd is mixed and it runs karaoke nights. It opens at 4pm Tuesday to Sunday.
D.I.X. (739 S 1st St) is a drag bar, open Thursday to Sunday from 8pm, with its own shows and Drag Race viewing.
POP (124 W National Ave) is a bar and restaurant with the busiest calendar on the strip: drag bingo, karaoke, showtune Sundays, King of Drag and weekend drag brunch.
Kruz (354 E National Ave) is a men's bar for regulars: pool and conversation, no dance floor. It opens at 3pm and is closed Sundays.
Harbor Room (117 E Greenfield Ave) is the Levi and leather bar. It opened in 2000, has been run by Brian Kohler and Robert Murphy since 2021, and marked 25 years in July 2025.
Woody's (1579 S 2nd St), at the south end, is the gay sports bar: games on TV, darts, easy street parking.
A sensible order: early drinks at POP or Fluid's patio, then Walker's Pint and D.I.X., then La Cage to finish. Harbor Room and Woody's are a 10-minute walk south.
Beyond Walker's Point
Bay View, just south (some locals call it "Gay View"), is where many queer couples and families live. It's residential, with cafés and bookshops but no gay bars. On the north side, Art Bar in Riverwest (722 E Burleigh St) is gay-owned, with rotating exhibitions and a mixed crowd. Tool Shed on N Murray Ave on the East Side is a woman-owned, queer-inclusive sex-positive shop. The East Side also hosts Pride on Brady, a free street festival in June.
Pride and the yearly calendar
Milwaukee PrideFest fills Henry Maier Festival Park, the Summerfest grounds on the lakefront, every June. It started in 1988 in Juneau Park and moved to Maier Park in 1996, and calls itself the world's largest LGBTQ+ festival on permanent festival grounds. The 2026 festival, the 38th, ran from 4 to 6 June with six stages; day tickets were $20 to $30. Dates for 2027 hadn't been announced at the time of writing.
The Milwaukee Pride Parade is separate and free. It steps off on South 2nd Street in Walker's Point on the Sunday after PrideFest; in 2026 that was 7 June at 2pm. The first march, in 1989, went from the Walker's Point bars to Cathedral Square.
Later in the year, Wisconsin Leather Pride Weekend takes place in Milwaukee in mid-November (13 to 15 November 2026). Milwaukee Film's GenreQueer programme runs queer screenings through the year; the old Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival ended after 2019. The Community Center's own calendar has something most days. See our Milwaukee events page for dated listings.
Cruising and saunas
Milwaukee has no gay bathhouse. Midtowne Spa on South Water Street, the last one, closed in 2016. The nearest are in Chicago, about 90 minutes away. Juneau Park on the lakefront bluff is part of the city's gay history: the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project traces men meeting there to the 1940s, and the Sheriff ran stings there as late as 1996. We found no recent reporting, so treat it as history. Public sex is illegal in Wisconsin. In practice, people here meet on apps and in the Walker's Point bars, with Harbor Room the most traditional of them.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
This Is It! (418 E Wells St), Wisconsin's oldest gay bar, opened in 1968 and closed on 9 March 2025. In 2026 the state approved it as a historic landmark. Nothing has opened in its place.
Hamburger Mary's closed its Walker's Point restaurant in 2024. In 2025 it announced plans to reopen at 235 S 2nd St, but it hadn't opened by October 2026.
Midtowne Spa, the bathhouse, closed in 2016.
Club Icon is in Kenosha, 40 miles south, not Milwaukee.
Where to stay
There's no gay hotel. Downtown and the Third Ward are a 20- to 30-minute walk or a short ride from 2nd Street. The Iron Horse Hotel (500 W Florida St) is the closest, on the edge of Walker's Point. Kimpton Journeyman is in the Third Ward. The Pfister, Saint Kate and Hotel Metro are downtown, and Brumder Mansion is a B&B on the near west side. Book early for PrideFest weekend.
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is about 8 miles south of downtown. Amtrak's Hiawatha runs to Chicago Union Station in about 90 minutes, several times a day, and stops at the airport. The Hop streetcar is free and covers downtown, the Third Ward and the lakefront, but it doesn't reach Walker's Point. For the bars, walk from the Third Ward or take a rideshare. Bars close at 2am, 2:30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Health and community
The LGBT Community Center runs support groups, older-adult drop-ins and social nights. Vivent Health (1311 N 6th St) offers free HIV testing and PrEP. Diverse & Resilient runs sexual health, anti-violence and youth programmes and a warmline (414-856-LGBT). Courage+ houses LGBTQ+ young people.
A few words of local
"The Fruit Loop" is the 2nd Street bar circuit. "Summerfest grounds" means Henry Maier Festival Park. A "bubbler" is a drinking fountain, and a "Brandy Old Fashioned" is the Wisconsin cocktail you'll be offered.
