Amazing bar. Bobby is the best. Conrad is cute. I don't know the other bartenders, but I'm sure they're good also. Well run establishment, very friendly clientele. ---Brianna

The bar has lots of street parking since it's on a corner of a wide intersection. This bar has been a part of my life since 2000 when a bartender there...

Milwaukee's LGBTQ+ History and Community

Milwaukee's queer history runs deep. Underground gay bars operated downtown as early as the 1950s and 1960s, and the community became far more visible in the 1970s, with the city's first Pride marches at the end of that decade. Like every American city, Milwaukee was hit hard by the AIDS crisis, and the care networks, activism, and memorials that grew out of those years still shape the community today. The Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project, founded in the mid-1990s, keeps that record alive as the state's largest queer archive. Modern Milwaukee has a settled, unpretentious LGBTQ+ presence woven through its neighborhoods, festivals, and civic life.

Walker's Point: The Gayborhood

The undisputed heart of gay Milwaukee is Walker's Point, the near-south-side district centered on South 2nd Street between National and Greenfield Avenues. Locals call the bar strip the "Fruit Loop," and in October 2025 the city painted rainbow crosswalks at 2nd and National to mark it. Within a couple of walkable blocks you'll find the densest concentration of LGBTQ+ nightlife in Wisconsin. Neighboring Bay View, just south, has a laid-back, queer-friendly feel with cafes and casual spots, while the trendy Historic Third Ward and Brady Street on the East Side are lively, welcoming areas but are not the center of the gay scene.

Nightlife

Walker's Point delivers a genuine bar crawl. La Cage NiteClub (801 S 2nd St) is the flagship, a multi-room dance club that has anchored the strip for four decades and forms the hub of Pride weekend. Right beside it, Fluid (819 S 2nd St) is a friendly cocktail lounge with a year-round back patio and fire pit, and Walker's Pint (818 S 2nd St) is one of the last surviving lesbian bars in the country. D.I.X. (739 S 1st St) brings dancing and drag on the weekends, while Woody's (1579 S 2nd St) is the city's gay sports bar. Kruz (354 E National Ave) is a relaxed, cruise-leaning cocktail bar, and Harbor Room (117 E Greenfield Ave) is Milwaukee's Levi/leather cruise bar. The newest arrival, POP (124 W National Ave), pairs an LGBTQ+ bar with a restaurant and a busy calendar of drag bingo, karaoke, and drag brunch. Sadly, This Is It! — Wisconsin's oldest gay bar, which ran for some 57 years on East Wells Street and housed a permanent History Project exhibit — closed in March 2025, and the beloved Hamburger Mary's shut its Walker's Point location in 2024.

Pride and Major Events

Milwaukee PrideFest takes over Henry Maier Festival Park (the lakefront Summerfest grounds) each June, billed as the world's largest LGBTQ+ Pride festival held on permanent festival grounds. A separate, community-run Milwaukee Pride Parade steps off in June along South 2nd Street through Walker's Point. Beyond Pride season, the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center programs events year-round, and film screenings, drag shows, and social nights keep the calendar full.

Where to Stay

There's no dedicated gay hotel, but plenty of welcoming options sit close to the action. Downtown places like the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel (a boutique favorite in the Third Ward, walkable to Walker's Point), the historic Pfister Hotel, the arts-themed Saint Kate, Hotel Metro, and the Iron Horse Hotel all draw LGBTQ+ travelers, and the Brumder Mansion Bed & Breakfast offers a characterful stay on the near west side.

Getting Around

Walker's Point sits just south of downtown and is easy to reach by rideshare, bus (MCTS), or bike. The bar strip itself is compact and walkable once you're there, though Milwaukee is spread out enough that you'll want transit or a car to move between the lakefront, downtown, and the East Side.

Safety and Community

Milwaukee is generally safe and comfortable for LGBTQ+ visitors, with an established, visible community. Use normal urban caution late at night. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center (161 S 1st St, in Walker's Point) is the best on-the-ground resource for events, support services, and current information, and Diverse & Resilient advances LGBTQ+ health and equity across the region.

Food, Culture, and Nearby

Milwaukee is a beer-and-brewery town with a growing, inclusive food scene, from the restaurants of the Third Ward to the cafes of Bay View and Brady Street. Landmark sights include the Calatrava-winged Milwaukee Art Museum, the Harley-Davidson Museum, and the Pabst Theater, and the Lake Michigan lakefront offers beaches and walking paths a short hop from downtown. Late spring through early fall (peaking around June Pride) is the sweet spot for a visit.
