Homage David Hockney A BIGGER SPLASH
About the event
Homage David Hockney A BIGGER SPLASH Directed by: Jack Hazan UK 1973, 105 min., restored version by BFI, Original English with German subtitles, DVD projection With: David Hockney, Peter Schlesinger, Celia Birtwell, Mo McDermott, Henry Geldzahler, Kasmin In the early 1970s, director Jack Hazan was part of David Hockney's close circle of friends, the dazzling figure of the Swinging Sixties. It is not an easy time for the brilliant painter: his relationship with Peter Schlesinger has broken down and he still has to finish his large portrait for an exhibition in New York. Nevertheless, he grants Hazan insight into his life – between London, New York and California. What's more: he plays along. An amalgam of experiment and illusion, documentary and staging is created, and A BIGGER SPLASH becomes a poetic snapshot of the artist and gay scene of the 1970s, soon a classic and still admired today. Martin Scorsese called A BIGGER SPLASH "one of the best films about an artist and his work I have ever seen". Hockney himself was initially shocked by the result, but was quickly convinced of the film's beauty by his friends. The success at international festivals and at the box office proved the director right. Admission: €7, Tickets in advance at the store and at the box office.
