Gay Columbus 2026

The honest summary: Columbus has one of the bigger and steadier gay bar scenes in the Midwest. It is split between the Short North on North High Street and a cluster of neighbourhood bars south of downtown, and it still has a 24-hour bathhouse. Nothing here is glossy, but there are more than a dozen bars that really are queer, and that is more than most American cities of this size can say in 2026.

Where the scene is

The Short North is the stretch of North High Street between downtown and the Ohio State campus. Every guide we checked, from Out x Out to Experience Columbus, calls it the city's gayborhood. Stonewall Columbus, the LGBTQ+ community centre, is at 1160 N High St, Union Cafe and Axis face each other at the 700 block, and Goodale Park, the home of the Pride festival, is a block west in Victorian Village.

South of downtown is the second hub, and for bars it is the busier one. South High Street through the Brewery District and Merion Village, plus Parsons Avenue, holds most of the neighbourhood bars: Tremont, Club Diversity, Boscoe's, Southbend, Cavan, Rumours and, a few blocks east, the Toolbox. German Village, next door, is often described as the city's first gay neighbourhood from the 1960s on. Today it is mostly residential: brick streets, restaurants and no gay bars of its own.

Bars in the Short North and downtown

• Union Cafe (782 N High St). This restaurant and bar has been open since 1996. It has a big patio and is the easy first stop of a Short North night.
• Axis Nightclub (775 N High St). This is the city's main gay dance club, with drag and go-go shows on weekends. Reviews are mixed (3.5 on Google), but it is still the big room.
• Slammers (202 E Long St, downtown). A lesbian bar and pizza kitchen open since 1993, and one of the few lesbian bars left in the US. It is downtown, not in the Short North.
• District West (145 N 5th St). A drag show bar run by Virginia West, with shows most nights. Book ahead for weekend shows.
• O'Connor's Club 20 (20 E Duncan St, north of campus). A karaoke dive that sponsors local gay sports teams.
• The Go Go (987 N 4th St, Italian Village). This dance bar isn't marketed as gay, but its drag brunches pull a queer crowd. We list it as friendly.

Bars south of downtown

• Tremont Lounge (708 S High St). Out x Out calls it the city's oldest gay bar, open since 1987. Expect karaoke and drag.
• Club Diversity (863 S High St). A piano bar in a Victorian house, and the best-rated bar in town on Google (4.7).
• Boscoe's (1224 S High St). A show bar with drag, male revues and karaoke.
• Southbend Tavern (126 E Moler St, Merion Village). A neighbourhood dive with karaoke, drag nights and pool.
• Cavan Irish Pub (1409 S High St). A gay Irish pub with karaoke, drag and a heated patio.
• Rumours (1071 Parsons Ave). A lesbian-owned bar with a late-1970s look, open since 2022. It runs drag, trivia and karaoke nights.
• The Toolbox Saloon (744 Frebis Ave). The leather and bear bar: a dive with a patio, busiest on gear nights.
• AWOL (49 Parsons Ave, Olde Towne East). A military-themed leather and bear dive with a patio.

Club Diversity

The bathhouse

Club Columbus (795 W 5th Ave) is a members-only men's bathhouse in The Clubs chain, open 24 hours. Out x Out lists a seasonal outdoor pool, whirlpool, steam room, dry sauna, gym and private rooms. Bring photo ID. It is the only gay sauna in Columbus. Older listings that put it on West Town Street are out of date.

We don't list outdoor cruising spots. The only sources for Columbus parks are scraped cruising directories, and Ohio's public indecency law is enforced in city parks, which close at 11pm. The bathhouse and the apps are the realistic options. More on the Columbus cruising page.



Community

Stonewall Columbus (1160 N High St) runs Pride and a busy weekly calendar: book clubs, queer yoga, Trans Talk Tuesday and a monthly hiking group. Queer Beans Coffee and the Little Gay Bookstore opened inside the building in September 2025. Kaleidoscope Youth Center moved to 700 Bryden Rd in June 2026. Equitas Health runs a walk-in health centre at 1033 N High St, and Out of the Closet (1230 N High St) is a thrift store that offers free HIV testing. The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus performs at the Riffe Center, and its holiday show runs December 12 and 13, 2026.

Pride and events

Stonewall Columbus Pride is usually held on the third weekend of June. In 2026 it ran June 19 and 20: the festival filled Goodale Park and the march left Broad and High at 10:30am on Saturday, heading north up High Street. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Columbus Community Pride, organised by the Black Queer & Intersectional Collective, is a separate community-run event. Its 2026 festival was set for October 10 at Mayme Moore Park. South Side Pride on Parsons Avenue is held in early June.

Columbus hosted the Gay Softball World Series from August 30 to September 5, 2026, its fourth time as host. The 2027 series moves to San Francisco. You can find upcoming nights on our tonight page.



Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

• Steel Mill Tavern (1816 Parsons Ave) closed in 2025. A sports bar took over the space.
• Bossy Grrl's Pin Up Joint, the queer burlesque bar, closed in December 2025. Its space is now a cocktail lounge.
• Black Sheep (1124 N High St) ended regular bar service in January 2026 and now opens only for events.
• Slammies, the campus offshoot of Slammers, closed in June 2024. The downtown original is still open.
• Havana Video Bar on North High Street is closed.
• Exile, Crescendo and Challenges appear in some older online guides. We couldn't find any of them operating.

Practical tips

• John Glenn Columbus International (CMH) is about 6 miles east of downtown, a 15-minute drive.
• Columbus is a car city. COTA buses run along High Street, but you'll want rideshares to get between the Short North and the south-side bars, which are 2 to 4 miles apart.
• Stay in the Short North or downtown, for example at The Joseph or Moxy Short North. Hotels on the Pride route sell out early.
• Ohio bars can serve until 2:30am, and most of the scene runs late on Fridays and Saturdays.

A few words of local speak

"C-bus" means the city, "the Short North" or "Short North" means the gayborhood, "Parsons" means the south-side bar strip on Parsons Avenue, and "Comfest" means the big hippie music festival in Goodale Park in late June. Ohioans also say "pop", not soda.
