The City of Manila's gay nightlife is concentrated in Malate, the country's historic gay district around Maria Orosa and J. Nakpil Streets. The scene here has shrunk a great deal since its 2000s heyday — several landmark clubs have closed — but a couple of dependable gay bars survive, and the wider Metro Manila (Quezon City, Makati, Pasig) offers a fuller night out a short Grab ride away.

Malate — The Historic Gay District

Along Maria Orosa Street in Malate you'll find the survivors of what was once Asia's most famous gay strip:

    • Che'Lu Bar & Restaurant (1802 Ma. Orosa St cor. J. Nakpil St, Malate) — Now the flagship of the strip. A long-running restaurant and karaoke bar with a small dance floor and drag performances several nights a week. Affordable, unpretentious and full of local character.
    • FAB Bar & Restaurant (Ma. Orosa Street, Malate) — A lively gay bar-restaurant known for nightly performers and karaoke. A good spot for Filipino comfort food and drinks before a floor show.

    Malate's famous names — the superclub Bed, Government, the arts café Penguin and the beloved comedy bar The Library (closed 2025) — have all shut, part of what writers have called "the death of gay Malate."

    Elsewhere in Metro Manila (Separate Cities)

    Much of the metro's gay nightlife has moved out of the City of Manila to neighbouring cities, each with its own GayOut page:

    • O Bar — Manila's most famous drag institution closed its Malate branch back in 2013 and now operates in the Ortigas Home Depot on Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig. The production-number drag shows remain among the best in Southeast Asia.
    • Quezon City — Tomas Morato–Timog and Cubao host the metro's youngest, busiest scene (Club Mankind, macho-dancer bars and more).
    • Makati — Poblacion and Greenbelt offer more upscale, international venues.

    Practical Notes

    • Getting around: Grab is essential — traffic is heavy and venues are spread across separate cities.
    • Hours: Nightlife starts late; most places don't fill until midnight, with weekends running to 3–4am.
    • Prices: Very affordable — cheap drinks and minimal or no cover.
⚠ Cultural context: Same-sex activity is fully legal nationwide in the Philippines, and there is a deep cultural acceptance of gay men and trans women ("bakla"). There is no same-sex marriage and no national anti-discrimination law yet, so use normal discretion in public spaces outside the gay areas.
