October’s Book: What Moves the Dead
For our October Queer Book Club Vienna meeting, we are embracing horror with T. Kingfisher’s What Moves the Dead.
The novella is a reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic short story The Fall of the House of Usher. It follows retired soldier Alex Easton, who travels to the ancestral home of their childhood friends, the Ushers.
However, something is deeply wrong at the estate. Strange wildlife, mysterious fungal growth and an increasingly disturbing atmosphere suggest that the house is hiding much more than it first appears.
Kingfisher combines gothic horror, body horror and dark humour in a short, atmospheric story. As a result, there is plenty to discuss, from gender and identity to illness, nature, transformation and the traditions of gothic fiction.
