Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby + Christie/Chan Duo
About the event
Tonight, bandleader/bass player Fergus Quill presents his musical tribute to the original Leeds alt-jazz pioneer Xero Slingsby, and his band The Works. In the week of Xero’s 69th birthday, Fergus and his quintet will be playing music from their 2023 album “Up Yours! Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby”, a selection of reimagined music from the two albums Xero released in the mid-1980s, a few years before he sadly died from a brain tumour. Alto saxophonist Xero Slingsby (real name Matthew Coe), was heavily involved in the local jazz and experimental music scenes in Leeds from the late 1970s onwards. With his band The Works (bass player Louis Colan and drummer Gene Velocette), he blazed a trail of wild jazz with punk attitude and quirky English comedic wit across the UK and northern Europe, releasing two LPs before he passed away aged only 31 years old. That same spirit Xero had is still present in the Leeds DIY alt-jazz scene with musicians and bands like Fergus Quill Trio, Vipertime, Yoshizawa, Teruki Chan, Nikka Ticciati, Amon Ra Collective and Harvey Parkin-Christie. Support for this show are barbarian jazz exponents the Christie/Chan Duo (Teruki Chan drums and Harvey Parkin-Christie tenor sax).
This show is financially supported by Jazz North and their New Northern promoter bursary award.
