Plage de Palavas-les-Flots

Palavas-les-Flots is the closest seaside resort to Montpellier, connected to the city centre by tram line 3 in approximately 30 minutes (€1.70, no car needed). The resort's long sandy beach extends in both directions from the main promenade; the eastern section of the Plage de la Méditerranée has an established informal gay presence, particularly on summer weekends and throughout July and August. The water is shallow and safe; the beach is busy in summer but large enough to find space. Palavas is a traditional French seaside town — somewhat kitschy, reliably sunny, and an easy day trip. For a more secluded gay beach experience, **La Grande-Motte** (15 minutes further east by car) offers a longer, quieter stretch with a stronger gay presence at its northern end.
