Casal Lambda

Casal Lambda was founded in 1976 — the year after Franco's death, during the democratic transition — making it one of the oldest LGBTQ+ organisations in Spain and the oldest in Catalonia. The organisation predates the Spanish constitution, predates the decriminalisation of homosexuality (1979), and predates every legal protection that Spanish LGBTQ+ people now enjoy. This history shapes everything about Casal Lambda: the organisation understands itself as a political as well as social institution, with a memory of what the absence of rights looks like and a corresponding seriousness about advocacy, documentation, and community service. The Casal's centre in the Sant Pere neighbourhood (between the Gothic Quarter and El Born) houses a library and archive with one of Spain's most significant collections of LGBTQ+ materials, a legal advice service, psychological support, youth programming, cultural events, and a community meeting space. The organisation is central to Pride Barcelona and to the ongoing political advocacy work of Barcelona's LGBTQ+ community.
