Melbourne's best base for LGBTQ+ visitors depends on which part of the scene you are most interested in. South Yarra and Prahran put you close to Commercial Road; Fitzroy or Collingwood suit visitors drawn to the inner-north scene. The CBD is equidistant from both and well-connected by tram.

South Yarra and Prahran

Staying in South Yarra or Prahran puts you within walking distance of Commercial Road. The area is well-supplied with accommodation from boutique hotels to serviced apartments. South Yarra is a prosperous inner suburb with good restaurants and retail on Chapel Street; Prahran is slightly more casual and directly adjacent to the main gay strip.

Access to the CBD from here is straightforward — trams along Chapel Street run frequently into the city. South Yarra station provides train access.

Fitzroy and Collingwood

Accommodation in Fitzroy and Collingwood tends toward smaller boutique hotels and guesthouses rather than large hotel chains. The area has a strong independent hospitality culture — good coffee shops, restaurants, and bars within walking distance. For visitors primarily interested in the arts and the inner-north scene, staying here makes sense. Commercial Road is accessible by tram but involves a cross-city trip.

CBD hotels

The Melbourne CBD has a full range of accommodation at all price points. Large chain hotels here provide the standard facilities and are convenient for business visitors or those with diverse plans. Trams are free within the CBD fare zone, so getting to either the south or north gay zones from the city centre is cheap and frequent.

Cost and Midsumma

Melbourne accommodation is generally slightly cheaper than Sydney. The city fills up during Midsumma (January to mid-February) and bookings should be made well in advance for that period. Melbourne's Formula 1 Grand Prix in March also takes hotel capacity; if your visit coincides with that, early booking is essential.
