Gay Indianapolis 2026

The honest summary: Indianapolis has a small, steady gay scene rather than a gay district. Six LGBTQ+ bars, two 24-hour men's bathhouses and a handful of queer-owned shops are spread along and around Massachusetts Avenue, north of downtown and a little to the south. Several of the big names older guides still list (Talbott Street, the Unicorn Club, Zonie's Closet, the 501 Eagle) closed years ago. What's left is friendly, cheap by big-city standards and easy to do in a weekend. The city itself has had a human rights ordinance covering sexual orientation and gender identity since 2005; the state around it is more hostile, especially to trans people.

Where the scene is

There is no single gayborhood. Most sources, from Visit Indy to the Indy Gay Agenda's 2026 bar guide, point to Massachusetts Avenue (Mass Ave), the diagonal arts-and-restaurant street running north-east from downtown. Metro and Tini sit side by side at the 700 block, English Ivy's is a block off it on Alabama Street, and the Pride parade runs its full length every June.

• Old Northside and Herron-Morton Place, just north of downtown around 16th Street, have Greg's and a cluster of queer-friendly cafés and bookshops.
• Downtown holds Downtown Olly's on North Illinois Street and the Club Indianapolis bathhouse on North Capitol Avenue, both walkable from the hotels.
• Fountain Square, south-east of downtown, is the arts and music district. The White Rabbit Cabaret there runs regular drag and queer burlesque, and Sinners & Saints, a newer queer bar, is a short drive further south on Shelby Street. Older listings called Fountain Square the centre of gay life; it isn't, but it's worth an evening.
• Irvington, on the east side, has a cluster of small queer-owned businesses and its own neighbourhood Pride.
• Mapleton-Fall Creek, along North Meridian Street, is where the community organisations are: Indiana Youth Group and GenderNexus share a building at 3733 N Meridian.

Bars

• Metro (707 Massachusetts Ave) opened on New Year's Eve 1990. Its own site calls it a 21+ restaurant, bar and nightclub, with pub food, a dance floor, a fenced patio, weekly karaoke and DJs. It changed hands recently: the new owner, Bill Pritt of FortyFive Degrees, told the Indianapolis Business Journal he wasn't changing its role in LGBTQ nightlife. Open until 3am on Friday and Saturday.
• Tini (717 Massachusetts Ave), next door, is a small martini and video bar with movie nights, DJs later in the week and a little patio. Its site lists 4pm to midnight Sunday to Wednesday and until 3am Thursday to Saturday.
• English Ivy's (944 N Alabama St) has been a gay-owned bar and kitchen since 1999 and made Esquire's 2022 list of the best gay bars in America. Pub food, Monday trivia, a mixed regular crowd, open until 2am.
• Downtown Olly's (822 N Illinois St) has called itself Indy's gay bar since 2002: a sports bar and kitchen with karaoke, trivia, comedy and drag. It ended its famous 24-hour service in 2022 after a rise in hate crimes and now runs 7am to 2:30am.
• Greg's (231 E 16th St) sits on a site that has been a bar since 1980 and took the name Greg's Our Place in 2002. Dance floor, pool, darts and a patio, drag on Friday and Saturday from about 9pm, DJs afterwards. Cash only.
• Sinners & Saints (2849 Shelby St, by Garfield Park) is the newest of the bunch: a queer, LGBTQ+-owned neighbourhood bar in the space Google used to list as Shelby Street Tavern, with karaoke, trivia and a patio. Closed on Tuesday.

There is no lesbian bar, leather bar or Eagle in Indianapolis right now. The Eagle on Mass Ave is a fried-chicken restaurant. For a full rundown, see our Indianapolis gay bars page.

Bathhouses

Indianapolis has two, both open 24 hours, all year, for men 18 and over. Bring ID: both need a membership before you rent a locker or room.

• Club Indianapolis (620 N Capitol Ave), five blocks north of the Statehouse, is part of the Club Saunas group. Steam room, dry cedar sauna, gym, private rooms and a heated outdoor pool in season. A one-visit membership is $12 (free for men 18 to 24), lockers $15 to $22, rooms $28 to $36, per the club's page.
• The Works (4120 N Keystone Ave) goes back to The Body Works, which activist Stan Berg opened in 1977. It's under new ownership and renovated, per its site: saunas, steam, lockers and private rooms, a $10 day membership, and half-price rooms and lockers on Tuesday.

Shops, drag and culture

• Toolbox Men's Supply Company (750 N College Ave), a few minutes from Mass Ave, sells gay-market underwear, swimwear and harness brands.
• Hampton & Co. (5515 E Washington St) in Irvington is a queer-owned gift and vintage shop that hosts drag nights.
• The White Rabbit Cabaret in Fountain Square isn't a gay venue, but its calendar carries the Power Drag Revue and regular queer burlesque.
• The Chris Gonzalez Collection, more than 7,000 items of Indiana LGBTQ+ history, is held at the Indianapolis Public Library's Central Library, set up through a partnership between Indy Pride and the library.

Pride and events

Indy Pride is run by the nonprofit Indy Pride, Inc. In 2026 it fell on Saturday 13 June: the parade stepped off at 10am from Bottleworks and ran the length of Mass Ave, and the festival filled Military Park and White River State Park from 11am to 11pm. Entry was free apart from the ticketed main stage. On Sunday the Indy Gay Market ran in White River State Park. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked in November 2026; Pride has fallen on a mid-June Saturday in recent years.

Also worth knowing:

• The Indianapolis LGBT Film Festival, also run by Indy Pride, holds its 26th edition from 13 to 19 November 2026 at Kan-Kan Cinema on Windsor Street.
• The Indiana Fever host a Pride Night with Indy Pride each June (4 June in 2026).
• Indiana Pride of Color (INPOC) revived Black Pride as the BLQ+ Pride Fest on Monument Circle; we couldn't find a 2026 date.
• Drag runs most weekends at Greg's, Metro and Olly's, and touring Drag Race shows play the Old National Centre. Our Indianapolis events page pulls from the bars' and organisers' own feeds.

Community and health

• Indiana Youth Group (3733 N Meridian St) runs drop-in programmes for LGBTQ+ people aged 12 to 24.
• GenderNexus (same building, Suite 310) supports trans, nonbinary and gender-diverse people.
• Trans Solutions Resource and Research (3535 N Pennsylvania St) is a Black trans-led resource centre.
• The Damien Center (1420 E Washington St) is Indiana's largest HIV/AIDS service organisation. It moved into the purpose-built Mosaic Building in June 2025, and offers testing, PrEP and care.



Gone but still Googled

• Talbott Street, the big drag nightclub, closed on 25 June 2016.
• Zonie's Closet on East Washington Street closed in August 2022; the building is now part of the Damien Center campus.
• The Unicorn Club, a male strip club at 122 W 13th St, closed in the mid-2010s and the building was demolished in 2016. It was never a leather or cruising bar.
• The 501 Eagle, the city's leather and bear bar, closed in 2016. The Ten, the lesbian bar on Pennsylvania Street, closed in 2014, and the Varsity Lounge, the oldest gay bar in town, had gone by 2016.
• Dream Palace Books & Coffee, a queer bookshop and café on 16th Street, closed on 26 July 2025.
• Shelby Street Tavern is now Sinners & Saints. Out on Mass, a planned LGBTQ bar on Mass Ave, had still not opened as of 2026.

Where to stay

Stay downtown or near Mass Ave and you can walk to most of the bars, Club Indianapolis and the Pride footprint. The big convention hotels (JW Marriott, Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, Le Méridien) are 15 to 20 minutes' walk from Mass Ave; La Quinta on East Washington Street is closer. Practical tips

• Getting in: Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is about 7 miles (11 km) south-west of downtown, 15 to 25 minutes by car.
• Getting around: downtown and Mass Ave are walkable. The IndyGo Red Line bus rapid transit runs north-south from Broad Ripple through downtown; for Sinners & Saints, The Works or Irvington you'll want a car or rideshare.
• Money: Greg's is cash only. Bars are 21+, and the bathhouses need ID and a membership.
• Trans travellers: the city ordinance protects you in public places, but state policy is restrictive, and US passports have been issued with sex at birth only since 2025. Carry ID that matches how you travel.
• Safety: the downtown and Mass Ave bars are busy and relaxed; Olly's cut its 24-hour opening in 2022 after harassment rose, so use normal late-night care and rideshares after closing.
