About this place La Calle de Bruselas

La Calle de Bruselas sits directly on Plaza de la Merced, which puts it at the geographic centre of Malaga's small gay quarter - El Carmen is across the square and the bars of Calle Cervantes and Calle San Juan de Letran are a two-minute walk. The concept is a corner of Belgium in Andalusia: wood-panelled interior, Belgian beers on the menu alongside Spanish staples, and a terrace on the square that fills up from breakfast onwards. It is not a gay bar in the strict sense but a long-standing gay-popular one: the location and the relaxed, mixed crowd have made it a fixture of the scene, and it works equally well for a morning coffee, an afternoon snack or a first round before the night moves on to the bars nearby. Open daily from 9am until well past midnight (2am Sunday-Thursday, 3am Friday-Saturday), so it also catches the late crowd when other cafes have closed.

The coffee was not good at all, but our morning tapas and juice were okay. Another thing that bothered us was the sexist nature of the toilet with bla bla bla on the door for women, while a little further away they have a poster for LGBTQ+ rights. So you need to think about it a bit...

Great place to have a few drinks and relax. I highly recommend it.

We arrived full of excitement after seeing the advertisement at the entrance (the photo I posted), but it was misinterpreted because we thought the drink and tapa would only cost €1.50. The worst part is that the waitress, while serving us, was attentive and listened to our surprise at how much we were going to drink for all the tapas we wanted to order (I understood it was all together for €1.50). She never clarified or helped us with this, even though she realized we had misunderstood. The people at the next table had the same experience. This misleading advertising, with a simple explanation, would have prevented us from spending €64.

€3.50 for a Coca-Cola, what a rip-off!

Top service, muy friendly. The last authentic bar at Plaza La Merced. Perfect!
