The honest summary: gay Rio happens on the beach by day and in Lapa by night. The rainbow flags on Ipanema beach in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo are still the daytime centre, but Ipanema lost its flagship club when Galeria Café closed in February 2026, and most of the city's gay bars and clubs now sit in Lapa and the old Centro, with a second cluster forming in the port district around Rua Sacadura Cabral. Copacabana keeps four solid venues and most of the saunas. Rio is easygoing about same-sex couples in the Zona Sul, but street crime and drink-spiking are real, and they shape how you go out.

Where the scene is
- Ipanema (Farme de Amoedo, Postos 8-9). The gay beach: flags on the sand, barracas (beach stalls) that cater to the crowd, and a muscular, body-conscious scene locals nickname the Barbies. Off the sand, only Silêncio Ipanema and the Rio G Spa sauna remain as dedicated venues; the pavement bars on Farme are mixed and gay-popular.
- Copacabana. The older gay beach (the Bolsa, in front of the Copacabana Palace), Brazil's oldest gay club, two drag bars, a darkroom club and three saunas.
- Lapa and Centro. Where most of the clubs are: Rua do Lavradio, Avenida Mem de Sá, Rua do Rezende, Rua André Cavalcanti and Rua dos Inválidos. This is the late-night zone, busiest Thursday to Sunday.
- Port district (Saúde, Rua Sacadura Cabral). Big party venues: The Home in the old The Week building and Up Turn, which moved here from Barra in 2026.
- Botafogo, Flamengo and Santa Teresa. Small lesbian and queer bars and two saunas.
- Rio Pride (Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+): the 31st edition is on Sunday 22 November 2026 on Avenida Atlântica, Copacabana, starting around Posto 5 (Rua Sá Ferreira) late in the morning. It is organised by Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBTI+. The press puts the crowd in the hundreds of thousands. See Rio Pride.
- Carnival 2027: Friday 5 to Ash Wednesday 10 February 2027, with the Special Group samba-school parades on 7 and 8 February. LGBTQ+ blocos include the Banda de Ipanema (since 1965), Sai Hétero and Divinas Tretas (formerly Toco-Xona). The old Gala Gay ball at the Scala hasn't run since 2019. See Carnival.
- RioLGBTQIA+ film festival: every July; the 15th edition ran 2-8 July 2026.
- Lapa held its own Pride march (4th edition) on 28 June 2026.
- Galeria Café (Ipanema): closed 9 February 2026 after 28 years. Many guides still list it.
- The Week Rio: closed 2013; the building is now The Home.
- Le Boy (Copacabana): closed 2016; Pink Flamingo now uses the space.
- Buraco da Lacraia: closed in the pandemic; Mansão L&D is in the building.
- Fosfobox (Copacabana): closed 2020, and it was a mixed club anyway.
- TV Bar is now Tau Bar Club; Termas Catete is now SPA Ariô; Sauna Copacabana is now 83 Men's Club.
- Termas Leblon (closed around 2020), Studio 64 (2011), Boate 1140 (around 2014, revived only as a party name), Street Lapa (2024), Dama de Ferro.
- Up Turn left Barra da Tijuca in 2026, and Silêncio's Barra branch closed, so Barra no longer has a gay venue.
- Getting in: international flights land at Galeão (GIG), about 27 km and 45-60 minutes by car from Ipanema. Santos Dumont (SDU), by Centro, is mostly domestic.
- Getting around: Metro Line 1 runs from Centro and Lapa (Cinelândia, Glória) through Flamengo, Botafogo and Copacabana (Siqueira Campos, Cantagalo) to General Osório in Ipanema; Line 4 continues to Leblon and Barra. After dark, use Uber or 99 door to door, especially in Lapa, Centro, the port and Santa Teresa.
- Drinks and apps: the US State Department (Level 2, August 2026) warns about drink-spiking in Rio and about foreigners being targeted through dating apps, and Rio police made "boa noite Cinderela" arrests linked to apps in 2025 and 2026. Watch your drink, meet dates in public first and never bring someone back after a first chat.
- Beach and street: phone snatching is the main risk. Carry a cheap phone and a copy of your passport, not the original.
- Paying: Pix rules in Brazil; most clubs take cards, some door staff want cash or Pix.
- Help: Rio Sem LGBTIfobia, 0800 023 4567 (24/7) or WhatsApp (21) 97706-2831; the police unit for hate crimes is DECRADI.
- Carioca: someone from Rio. Sunga: the Brazilian swim brief.
- Entendido: old-school word for gay ("in the know"). Bofe: a masculine guy, often the object of desire.
- Sapatão: lesbian (reclaimed). Urso: bear. Pegação: cruising.
- Garoto de programa: male sex worker. Boate: nightclub. Balada: a night out.
Bars and clubs
Copacabana. La Cueva on Rua Miguel Lemos opened in 1964 and is the oldest LGBTQ+ club in Brazil: a basement bar with a bear and mature crowd, Thursday to Saturday from 22:00. Pink Flamingo on Raul Pompéia, in the former Le Boy building, is the busiest drag-and-pop house, with Treta on Wednesdays and Drag Race guests most months. Tau Bar Club, the former TV Bar at Nossa Senhora de Copacabana 1417, runs rotating party nights. Black Cat on Princesa Isabel is a men's club with a large darkroom upstairs, Thursday to Sunday from 23:00.
Ipanema. Silêncio on Teixeira de Melo is a cocktail bar with drag pop-ups, open from late afternoon. It is the last gay bar standing in the old Ipanema strip.
Lapa and Centro. Mara Club (Rua do Lavradio 190) is a four-floor mansion club, Wednesday to Sunday from 23:00. A few doors away, Portal Rio (Lavradio 163) fills with a young local crowd on Friday and Saturday nights. Agyto on Mem de Sá does big funk and pop nights. Mansão L&D occupies the building of the legendary Buraco da Lacraia and runs the Retrô 1140 party on Saturdays. On Rua do Rezende, The Pride of Lapa does drag and karaoke, Wednesday to Sunday, and next door Retrô Lapa hosts Bailão Carioca, the Saturday bear party. Turma OK, founded in January 1961, is Brazil's oldest LGBTQ+ association and still runs drag shows and bingo on Rua dos Inválidos. Queerioca, the LGBTQIAPN+ cultural centre, reopened at Rua da Quitanda 81 in September 2026 with a bar and a weekly Mini Ball.
Port district. The Home (Sacadura Cabral 135) is the big room for party brands such as V de Viadão and ZIG. Up Turn (Sacadura Cabral 147) is the home of the Hole party. Sacadura 154 across the street is a general events hall that hosts several gay parties.
Queer women. Novooeste in Santa Teresa is lesbian-run, and Brejo Bar in Flamengo is a small sapatão bar. Sapphic parties such as Bailão das Sapatão and Femme Club move around the city.
Further out. Sunset Night is a beach kiosk on Ilha do Governador with drag at sunset; Seven Bar Show in Cascadura and the trans-focused Boate Casa Grande in Bangu serve the Zona Norte and Oeste. More in the full bar list.
Saunas
Rio has more gay saunas than any other city in South America, and they are a normal part of the scene. The tourist favourites are Rio G Spa in Ipanema (pricier, gym, zero-drug policy), Point 202 by Siqueira Campos metro (renovated 2025) and 83 Men's Club in Copacabana. SPA Ariô in Flamengo, the former Termas Catete, is the biggest, with a pool. Club 117 in Glória and New Meio Mundo downtown are known for garotos de programa (male sex workers). Cruising clubs
Centro has the cruising clubs: Dédalos Rio, the São Paulo brand's Rio branch, opened in May 2026 and now runs 24 hours; Seven on Praça da República; Taurus by the Lapa arches; and the K7 cabins. Public sex is a crime in Brazil (Penal Code art. 233) and outdoor spots are where robberies happen, so we name no meeting points; see the cruising guide.
Beaches
Ipanema at Farme de Amoedo, between Postos 8 and 9, is the one everyone means: flags, sungas and caipirinhas from barracas such as Denise 63 and Miriam 53, which rent chairs and umbrellas and know the crowd. Weekend afternoons in summer are the peak. The Bolsa, in front of the Copacabana Palace, is Brazil's first gay beach (1950s) and now has an older, quieter, trans-visible crowd. Praia do Abricó, past Grumari, is Rio's only official naturist beach (municipal law 5.807/2014); you need a car to get there. On any beach, bring a cheap phone and little cash.
Parties
A lot of gay Rio happens at roving parties rather than fixed venues. Regulars in 2026: V de Viadão (monthly, since 2013), ZIG (queer pop), Hole (fetish-leaning, at Up Turn, no filming), Treta (Wednesdays at Pink Flamingo), Roda Sambay (a gay samba circle on Sundays at Terrasse Rio), Bailão Carioca and Growl for bears, Batekoo for Black queer crowds and Bailão das Sapatão for women.
