The honest summary: Sacramento has a real, compact gay scene, and most of it is on one corner. Around 20th and K Streets in Midtown, the area the city named Lavender Heights in 2015, you'll find three gay bars on the same block (Faces, Badlands and The Depot), a queer-owned bar and burger kitchen next door, the oldest gay dive in the neighbourhood a block south, and the LGBT Community Center a few doors down. Add a queer cocktail lounge in Mansion Flats, a leather bar in North Sacramento, a men's bathhouse on Franklin Boulevard and two big street festivals, in June and on Labor Day weekend, and you have a scene that is small but easy to enjoy over a weekend. It isn't San Francisco, which is about two hours away by car.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in California since 28 June 2013 (and briefly in 2008), voters removed the old Prop 8 wording from the state constitution in November 2024, state law bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity, and California ID can carry a nonbinary "X" marker.
Where the scene is
Almost everything is in Lavender Heights, the stretch of Midtown centred on 20th and K. The City of Sacramento and the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce gave it the name in 2015 and painted a rainbow crosswalk at 20th and K that October; signs with rainbow toppers went up in 2018. In December 2024 the City Council adopted an LGBTQ+ historic context study that identifies a potential Lavender Heights historic district. As far as we could find, the formal designation vote hasn't happened yet.
- 20th and K: Faces, Badlands, The Depot, Roscoe's and the temporary home of the LGBT Community Center, all within about 100 metres.
- L Street, a block south: the Mercantile Saloon.
- Mansion Flats, north of downtown: Radclyffe's, the queer restaurant and lounge on H Street.
- Further out: The Bolt in North Sacramento and Sac Buddies in South Sacramento, both a car or rideshare away.
- Faces Nightclub (2000 K St) is the big one. It opened in 1985 in the old Christie's Elbo Room and grew into a multi-bar complex with several dance floors, a patio and a pool. The weekly calendar has karaoke, dance parties, a Friday Latin night and country line dancing early on Sunday evenings, and it brings in touring Drag Race queens. Expect a cover and a queue on show nights.
- Badlands Sacramento (2003 K St) is the dance and video bar across the street, with DJs, drag, Latin nights and karaoke. It shares an owner with The Depot next door.
- The Depot (2001 K St) is the neighbourhood bar of the trio, in a building that has been a bar since 1938, when it was The Western. Pool, a patio, music videos, karaoke and trivia, and cheaper drinks than the clubs.
- Roscoe's Bar & Burgers (2007 K St) is queer-owned and took over the old Sidetrax space in 2022. Its calendar has drag brunch every Sunday, the Velvet Room drag dinner show and piano-bar nights. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
- The Mercantile Saloon (1928 L St), "the Merc", is the oldest gay bar in Lavender Heights, open since 1976 or 1977 depending on the source. Cash only, cheap, with a jukebox and karaoke.
- Radclyffe's Restaurant & Cocktail Bar (1330 H St, Suite 110) opened in January 2025 in the old Bear Dive space. Google lists it as a lesbian bar: dinner first, then a 21+ lounge with Dyke Night, burlesque and pole nights. Open Thursday to Sunday.
- The Bolt (2560 Boxwood St, North Sacramento) is the leather, Levi's and bear bar, open daily 2pm to 2am with no cover. It hosts the Mr. Bolt Leather contest, traditionally in April.
- Sacramento LGBT Community Center runs Sacramento Pride, the Q-Spot youth drop-in (ages 13 to 24), health and PrEP services, housing help and trans services. It started in 1978 as the Lambda Community Fund. In 2026 it's working from 2031 K St while its own building at 1015 20th St is renovated, and it also runs the Marsha P. Johnson Center South on Stockton Boulevard.
- Lavender Library, Archives & Cultural Exchange (1414 21st St) is a volunteer-run queer library and archive founded in 1998, with book clubs, Queer Crafternoon, a writers' salon and peer groups. It opens Monday and Friday evenings and weekend afternoons.
- Gender Health Center (3823 V St) offers low-cost counselling, peer groups, HIV testing and legal help, aimed at trans and nonbinary people.
- One Community Health (1500 21st St) began as CARES, the HIV clinic, in 1989. It's now a community health center with HIV care, PrEP and sliding-scale fees.
- PFLAG Sacramento meets on the third Tuesday of each month at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
- Strapping (3405 Broadway) is a queer-owned gift shop that hosts markets and drag nights.
- Sacramento Pride March & Festival takes place in June. In 2026 the festival ran on 13 and 14 June on Capitol Mall, between 3rd and 7th Streets, and the march went from Southside Park to the Capitol on the Sunday morning. The organisers call it a 40,000-person festival. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing.
- Sacramento Rainbow Festival is a ticketed street party at 20th and K on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, 6 September in 2026. It was started by Faces owner Terry Sidie and has run for more than 30 years. The 2027 date isn't out yet.
- Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus: the holiday concert is on 5 December 2026 at Memorial Auditorium.
- Nearby: Davis Pride (early June) and Elk Grove Pride (late June).
- Sidetrax wasn't closed. It became Roscoe's Bar & Burgers in 2022.
- Bear Dive (H St) became Radclyffe's in January 2025.
- Lambda Community Center is the old name of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center.
- Galleria Bar was an old directory listing at 2001 K St, which is The Depot.
- BENT / Sacramento International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (Crest Theatre, every October since 1993) ended in 2023.
- Sacramento gay rodeo: the local association dissolved in 2019.
- Club Raven (J St) and Old Tavern (20th St) sometimes show up in gay searches. Both are ordinary dive bars.
- Getting there: Sacramento International (SMF) is about 11 miles north-west of downtown, 15 to 20 minutes by car. Amtrak stops at Sacramento Valley Station (401 I St). There's no direct train to San Francisco: change at Emeryville or Richmond.
- Getting around: Midtown and downtown are walkable and flat. SacRT runs light rail and buses. Use a rideshare for The Bolt and Sac Buddies.
- Weather: summers are hot and dry, often over 35°C. June Pride needs sun protection and water.
- ID: bring photo ID everywhere. Bars and the bathhouse check it.
Bars and clubs
Two places nearby are friendly rather than gay. Teneral Cellars Tasting Room & Wine Lounge (1050 20th St) is a wine lounge owned by spouses Jill Osur and Lisa Orrell, who bill it as LGBTQ+ and women-owned, with Monday trivia and Pride events. The Flamingo House (2315 K St) is a large mainstream bar and social club that has hosted the odd queer night. Out x Out also lists drag bingo nights at Mango's (1930 K St), but we couldn't confirm it as a gay venue.
California bars stop serving at 2am, so most of these close at 2am or 1:30am. Everything here is 21+.

Sauna
Sac Buddies (4909 Franklin Blvd) is Sacramento's only men's bathhouse. It's a members-only club for men 18 and over that opened around 2017, with a steam room, private rooms, lockers, showers and a lounge, and photo ID is checked at the door. Google lists it open from 11am daily, to 10pm Sunday to Thursday and 2am on Friday and Saturday. Prices aren't published in the sources we checked, so check sacbuddies.info first. Asha Urban Baths in Midtown is a mixed-gender wellness spa, not a gay venue.
Cruising
Cruising directories list the American River Parkway (Discovery Park area) near Discovery Park and William Land Park, and older local press wrote about Del Paso Regional Park. All three are busy public parks, patrolled by police and rangers, and the city cracked down on public sex in parks in 2008. Sex in public is illegal in California. We don't give directions. The legal options are Sac Buddies, the bars and the apps.

Where to stay
There are no gay hotels, so pick by location. Downtown, The Citizen Hotel, Autograph Collection, Kimpton Sawyer Hotel and The Sterling Hotel are about a mile, or a 20 to 25 minute walk, from 20th and K. On a budget, HI Sacramento Hostel is in a Victorian mansion on H Street. Delta King Hotel is a 1920s riverboat moored in Old Sacramento, and Vizcaya on 21st Street is the closest to Lavender Heights, though it's mostly a wedding venue. Book early for Pride weekend in June.

Practical tips
A few words
You won't need another language, but you'll hear Spanish around Sacramento. Faces and Badlands run Latin nights, and a few Spanish words help: noche latina (Latin night), ambiente (old slang for the gay scene) and la comunidad (the community).
