Vienna is a city that has always taken its bathing seriously. Behind a green door on a quiet lane a few minutes from St. Stephen's Cathedral, steam still drifts over a pool ringed with marble columns that opened in 1889; out in the 5th district, the smell of spices and roasting chestnuts from the Naschmarkt follows you down the Wienzeile. Afterwards there is always a coffee house, a Melange and a slice of strudel. The gay sauna scene is small and settled: three venues, one of them a piece of imperial-era history, all open every day and all within easy reach of the U-Bahn, which runs through the night at weekends.

Legal in one line: Austria decriminalised sex between men in 1971, introduced registered partnerships in 2010 and opened marriage to same-sex couples on 1 January 2019, after a Constitutional Court (VfGH) ruling of December 2017; gay saunas are legal private venues for adults, and the city's tourist board notes that prostitution is strictly banned in all of them.

Kaiserbründl: a bathhouse from 1889

Kaiserbründl · Weihburggasse 18–20, 1010 Wien (Innere Stadt)

Kaiserbründl occupies part of the old Zentralbad (Centralbad), built between 1887 and 1889 by a group of Viennese architects including Anton Honus, Anton Lang and the brothers Edmund and Franz Czada. According to Wikipedia, its interior took on its present look in 1894. Secret Vienna describes the style as oriental-Moorish and notes the two large, half-clad male torsos at the entrance. The bath was an exclusive establishment until the 1970s, and a men's sauna has run in part of the building since the 1980s, reports MeinBezirk.

What survives is the draw. The sauna's own website points to the historic pool area with mosaic tiles and marble columns; the Tempel hall, once a bathing pool, whose glass floor inserts recall that use; the winter garden, which once housed the wood-fired boilers; and ground-floor historic cabins styled after the Habsburg era.

The building also has a famous piece of gossip attached. Archduke Ludwig Viktor, Emperor Franz Joseph's youngest brother, nicknamed "Luziwuzi" by his family, was publicly slapped in the Centralbad, according to Wikipedia. The Austrian magazine profil reports that he had made an advance on a young man, who struck him in front of the other bathers (Vienna's tourist board tells it as an officer), and adds that the scandal was most likely a trap set by the heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand. Afterwards the emperor barred his brother from Vienna and Ludwig Viktor retired to Schloss Klessheim near Salzburg. Treat the details as reported history rather than settled fact.

Beyond the history, it's a large modern men's sauna: about 1,700 m², according to its website, with two saunas (one a bio sauna), a cruising steam room, a darkroom, slings, a "prison" area with cages and glory holes, a labyrinth of catacombs, rest cabins with TV, massage, and a restaurant and bar (kitchen until 21:30). There's a foam party on Saturdays from 18:00 to 22:00 and a party with cheap shots on Fridays.

Hours (official): Sunday to Friday 14:00–00:00, Saturday 14:00–02:00; last entry to the baths is 20 minutes before closing. Prices (official list from December 2024): €27 with a locker, €31 for a standard cabin, €34 for a historic cabin and €51 for a VIP cabin; €17 after 22:00 (€20 on Saturdays); €20 for under-28s and €17 for under-25s with ID. Monday is €4 off, Wednesday is Romeo day (a discount with the password from the app), Thursday is partner day (€27 for two), and one towel is included. A December 2025 article in 1000things also gave €27, so the list still looked current, but check the website.

Coming up: the annual Orgia Epikurea, this year themed "Jungle Fever", runs from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026, with a drag revue, shows, a foam party and a Sunday pasta buffet; regular prices apply and discounts don't. Getting there: U1/U3 Stephansplatz, U4 Stadtpark or tram 2 to Weihburggasse.

Römersauna: by the Naschmarkt

Römersauna · Rüdigergasse 2, 1050 Wien (Margareten)

A smaller Roman-themed sauna over two floors, a short walk from the Naschmarkt; misterb&b says it was formerly called Sauna Frisco and puts it at about 400 m². Its website lists a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, massage, two cruising areas and gay TV. It is now men only every day: the old mixed Thursday has been dropped. Nearest U-Bahn: U4 Pilgramgasse or Kettenbrückengasse.

Hours (official): Sunday to Thursday 11:00–00:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00–04:00. Some listings still give 23:00 on weeknights. Prices (official, dated October 2022): €17 standard; €12 before 13:00 on weekdays and after 22:00 from Sunday to Thursday; €10 for under-25s with ID; five entries for €85 with the sixth free; massage from €22 for 20 minutes. Extra towels cost €1 and shoe hire €2.

The weekly rhythm: Monday is Romeo day and partner day, Tuesday Junge Götter (under-30s, €12), Wednesday and Sunday "two for one" (a voucher for the same day the following week), and Friday Fetisch-Freitag. On the first Saturday of the month there's a bear sauna from 15:00 with the Austrian Bear Community, and on the second Saturday a Naked Party from 19:00 to 01:00. A Halloween party is planned for Saturday 31 October 2026, running through to 04:00, with a BDSM show from 23:00. Older guides mention "Hairy Tuesdays" and "XL Fridays"; the current programme is the one on the website.

What to expect: a recent misterb&b reviewer described it as small, with no pool, and a mostly older crowd.

Apollo City Sauna: the bears' sauna in Neubau

Apollo City Sauna · Wimbergergasse 34, 1070 Wien (Neubau)

Near the Westbahnhof, a short walk from U6 Burggasse-Stadthalle. Vienna's tourist board says it has been running for more than 25 years, and Travel Gay and misterb&b describe a crowd of mostly bears, butches, mature men and their admirers; a misterb&b reviewer in October 2026 summed it up as "mostly older bears, cold pool". Its website lists a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, a cold-water swimming pool, a bar with a lounge, a cruising area, and massage and wellness, over two floors. You can visit the bar without buying a sauna ticket.

Hours (official): daily 14:00–02:00, 365 days a year. Price: the official ticket page wasn't readable when we checked; 1000things reported a regular entry of €19 in December 2025. The same article says Saturday is a "diversity day" when women can also come in, so pick another day for a men-only visit. Special days and events are posted on the website.

Closed or renamed: the Sport Sauna (Sportsauna), in the basement of Hotel-Pension Wild at Lange Gasse 10 in the 8th district, is marked closed by Travel Gay and misterb&b; some guides still list it, sometimes under the wrong address. Sauna Frisco is the old name of what is now Römersauna.

Consent and common sense. Kaiserbründl has a darkroom, slings and a "prison" area, and both Römersauna and Kaiserbründl hold fetish nights. Whatever the room, you can always say no, move away or leave, and staff should step in if someone ignores that. Prostitution is banned in Vienna's gay saunas; if someone offers paid sex, a clear "Nein, danke" is enough. Lock your locker, keep the key on your wrist and bring as few valuables as possible.

A Viennese afternoon

Do it the Viennese way: slowly. Start with a coffee house, where a Melange comes with a glass of water and nobody hurries you out. Walk the Naschmarkt, the long market along the Wienzeile, for olives, cheese and a glass of wine, then head down to Römersauna at the Kettenbrückengasse end. Vienna's tourist board lists Café Savoy at Linke Wienzeile 36, a traditional coffee house from imperial times, among its LGBT cafés, and it is on the way. Later, a Würstelstand sausage stand is the classic late-night snack on the way to the U-Bahn. In the 1st district, Kaiserbründl's own restaurant serves food until 21:30, so you can eat before or after the steam.

A little further along the same street, at Linke Wienzeile 102, is the Rosa Lila Villa ("pink-lilac villa"), now formally the Türkis Rosa Lila Villa. Activists squatted the house, which was due for demolition, in 1982, and a 30-year lease followed in 1984, according to Wikipedia. Today it combines shared flats with counselling services for lesbians and for trans, gay and queer people. Queer Base, its project for LGBTIQ refugees, started here in 2016. On the ground floor, the café-restaurant Villa Vida (renamed in 2019) is, in the words of 1000things in March 2026, a meeting point for Vienna's queer communities, with step-free access; its 2026 programme has included drag workshops, a queer book club and comedy nights. Check its channels for opening times.

Practical tips

    • The all-night U-Bahn: Vienna's tourist board says the U-Bahn runs from about 05:00 to about midnight, and 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights and on nights before public holidays, with trains every 15 minutes. Kaiserbründl (U1/U3 Stephansplatz), Römersauna (U4 Kettenbrückengasse or Pilgramgasse) and Apollo (U6 Burggasse-Stadthalle) are all close to a station.
    • NightLine: on the other nights, NightLine buses run every night from about 00:30 to 05:00, roughly every 30 minutes. Trams and ordinary buses usually stop earlier. Check the Wiener Linien app for routes.
    • Apps: Romeo (formerly PlanetRomeo) is widely used here; both Kaiserbründl and Römersauna run Romeo-day discounts. Grindr is common too.
    • Money: prices are in euros. Carry a little cash in case card payment isn't available for extras.
    • Timing: Römersauna opens earliest (11:00) and closes latest at weekends (04:00); Kaiserbründl and Apollo open at 14:00. Late-entry tickets at Kaiserbründl (after 22:00) and Römersauna (after 22:00, Sunday to Thursday) cut the price.
    • Combining saunas: Römersauna's price list mentions a reduced Fetisch-Freitag entry of €10 with a Kaiserbründl connection ticket; ask at the desk.
    • Sexual health: Aids Hilfe Wien offers HIV and STI testing and advice. For PEP after a risk, go to a hospital emergency department as soon as possible.

    Vienna Pride 2026

Vienna Pride 2026 ran from 29 May to 14 June. For the first time it opened with a one-day Community Fest in the Prater on 30 May, alongside the Pride Run. The 30th Regenbogenparade (Rainbow Parade), which organisers call Austria's largest demonstration, took place on Saturday 13 June 2026, circling the Ringstraße against the direction of traffic under the motto "Sichtbar seit 1996" ("visible since 1996"). Organisers had expected more than 300,000 people. Song Contest winners JJ and Conchita Wurst were billed for the Pride Stage on Rathausplatz that evening. After the city cut its funding by nearly half, to €350,000, the Pride Village on Rathausplatz was reduced to a single day, on the day of the parade, reported vienna.at. Dates for 2027 had not been announced when we checked. Kaiserbründl's November tombola has a trip to EuroPride 2027 in Turin as its top prize.

    A few words of German

Everyone in the saunas understands standard German, and staff usually speak English.

    • Servus – hi or bye, Viennese style. Grüß Gott – a more formal hello.
    • Was kostet der Eintritt? – how much is entry?
    • Handtuch – towel. Kästchen – locker (as Kaiserbründl calls it). Kabine – cabin.
    • Dampfbad – steam room. Aufguss – a sauna infusion session.
    • Nein, danke – no, thanks (enough, and always to be respected).
    • Melange – the Viennese milky coffee. Prost! – cheers!
    • Regenbogenparade – the Rainbow Parade.
