Last verified: October 2026. Tel Aviv sells itself as the gay capital of the Middle East and has exactly one gay hotel, one gay-run guesthouse that has closed, and, as of late 2026, two dedicated gay bars, one of them rebuilt after an Iranian missile flattened it in June 2025. That is not a collapse; the city's gay life was never in gay-branded buildings. It is on the sand below the Hilton, in the mixed bars of Rothschild and Nahalat Binyamin, in party lines that move between clubs, in three saunas, and in the fact that a hotel receptionist here has never once cared who shares your room. This guide tells you which hotels are two minutes from the gay beach and which are two minutes from the bars (they are three kilometres apart), who closed since 2024 (Shpagat, Layla, Selina, the Pink House), what the 2026 Pride looked like after two cancelled years, how the 18 per cent hotel VAT disappears when you show a passport, how Shabbat and Yom Kippur shut the city, what a siren means and what your hotel does about it, and where PEP is at three in the morning. The security section is written honestly: the Gaza ceasefire is a year old and shaky, a second Iran war in spring 2026 closed the airport for six weeks, the airlines are back, the UK no longer advises against travel to Tel Aviv and the US still says reconsider. Israel votes on 27 October 2026; this guide was written the day before.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Our listings carry a "nearest gay venue" line and a distance to the centre of the scene. In Tel Aviv that centre falls, correctly, on Rothschild and Nahalat Binyamin, where Lima Lima, the Hamam sauna, Paradise Spa and the Brown hotels sit within three hundred metres of one another; the gay beach is 2.7 kilometres north of it. The city is flat and walkable along the sea, bikes and scooters are everywhere, and a Gett or Yango ride between the two poles costs ILS 35–50 (US$11–16). Multiply the "scene distance" on a listing by 1.3 and divide by 80 for walking minutes.

The beach pole. Hilton Beach is the municipality's officially designated gay beach, the strip of sand below the Hilton and Independence Park with the rainbow flags, between the dog beach to the north (the buffer to the gender-segregated Orthodox beach at Nordau) and the surf break to the south. It fills from Friday noon and all Saturday, and in Pride week it is the city's living room. The Hilton is 38 metres from it, with a saltwater pool and the Pride beach party at its feet each June. Across HaYarkon, Melody and Shalom & Relax are 500 metres away (eight minutes, no pool, rooftop happy hour, from about US$180), the Gordon 260 metres, the Carlton 300 with its rooftop pool, Herods 450. The Sheraton, Renaissance and Leonardo Art line the next kilometre south: twelve minutes along the promenade. The Isrotel Tower, which one gay guide puts "two minutes" from the gay beach, is twenty.

The bar pole. Tel Aviv's dedicated gay bars in October 2026 are Mash Central on Allenby near Pinsker, the sixteen-year-old bar that an Iranian missile destroyed on 16 June 2025 and that reopened on 30 October 2025 with a bigger stage, and Callas TLV on Menachem Begin 37, opened in November 2025 as a members' club by the promoter behind Pop Ring. Shpagat on Nahalat Binyamin, which was the gay bar for a decade, closed in 2024; so did Layla on Yavne. The rest of the week is mixed venues with gay nights: Lima Lima on Lilienblum 42, Kuli Alma on Mikveh Israel, Biste on Shenkin 10 (the Berlin-style queer line that opened in November 2025), the Levontin music bars, and the party brands (Forever, Pag, Arisa, Dreck, Crush) that take over HaOman 17 in Florentin, Hangar 11 at the port and the Lost & Found club. Hotels at this pole: Lily & Bloom is 64 metres from Lima Lima, Vera 75, Brown TLV 80, Brown BoBo and PLAY Levontin 80 from Kuli Alma, Abraham Hostel 88 from the Hamam, R48 120, the Norman 115, Fabric 190 from Paradise Spa, Hotel 75 is in the Paradise building, Montefiore 270, 65 Hotel 320, Shenkin Hotel 200, Elkonin 220. All of them are a two-to-five-minute walk from everything above.

The saunas. Hamam, the 500-square-metre sauna that opened in November 2025 on HaRakevet by the Allenby light-rail stop (ILS 75–120), is the new anchor; Paradise Spa at Allenby 75 is the old one (steam, dry, cabins, darkroom, ILS 85, an older crowd); Sauna Club on Carlebach 14 is the play-oriented one, 140 metres from the Iconic Hotel. The LGBTQ Center in Gan Meir (Tchernichovsky 22, off King George) is the midpoint of the city and the place for Sunday-evening free testing; the Cinema and Center Chic hotels are eight minutes from it, the Shenkin Hotel eight, the Hilton twenty-five.

Jaffa is a different city: Arab and Jewish, old stone, the flea market, the port, and INTA, the Setai, the Jaffa Hotel and the Drisco. HaOman 17 in Florentin is a ten-minute walk from all of them; the Rothschild bars twenty to twenty-five; the gay beach a fifteen-minute taxi or a long bike ride up the whole seafront.

Gay, gay-marketed, or merely friendly: the honest list

INTA Tel Aviv Jaffa, Derech Ben Zvi 3. Opened in 2019 by Khader Abu-Seif, a Palestinian-Israeli LGBTQ activist, and his partner, in an Ottoman-era building at the edge of Jaffa; the name means "you" in Arabic. Adults only, superior and gallery doubles with balconies, a plant wall, a rooftop lounge with cabaret and live nights, no pool, a kitchen that is not kosher. It was pitched as a bridge, queer and straight, Arab and Jewish, and it still is; it is also, by 2026, a little tired, and the gay guides rate the idea higher than the rooms. It is the only hotel in Israel that describes itself as a gay hotel. About US$150–250.

Pink House TLV, HaAri Street in the Yemenite Quarter, was the city's one gay-run guesthouse: four apartments and a shared roof terrace a block from the Carmel Market. It is marked permanently closed and we have archived it; a stale listing still sells it on one booking site. Roger's House Hostel and the Selina hostels (Neve Tzedek, Frishman, the beach) are also gone; Selina Israel ceased operations in August 2024 and went into liquidation in 2025. There is no gay hostel.

The Brown hotels. Founded by Leon Avigad, who is openly gay, the Brown group has positioned itself as the LGBTQ-friendly local chain since 2010, and Brown Brut was the municipality's official Pride hotel in 2022. Brown TLV Urban on Kalisher 25 is the original: dark rooms, rooftop jacuzzi suites, no pool, 80 metres from Lima Lima. Brown BoBo on Yavne has a rooftop pool (closed 1 November to 20 April) and PLAY Levontin is the party-priced one by the Levontin bars; both were wrongly archived in our listings and are back. Lighthouse at HaYarkon 1 is the group's seafront tower with a rooftop pool, twelve minutes from the bars. Brown hotels are loud, young and not kosher; the Dave budget brand (Gordon, Levinsky) is the same idea for less.

The Atlas hotels. Not gay-marketed, reliably gay-comfortable, and the best value in the city: Melody and Shalom & Relax opposite the Hilton beach, Fabric on Nahalat Binyamin, Lily & Bloom on Lilienblum, 65 Hotel on the boulevard, Cinema and Center Chic on Dizengoff Square. No pools, rooftop terraces, free happy hour with wine and snacks, free bikes, from about US$180 to US$300.

The hotel on the gay beach. The Hilton Tel Aviv is a 1965 concrete slab on Independence Park with the gay beach, the dog beach and the surfers directly below, a saltwater pool, a gym, a kosher breakfast the size of a market and prices from about US$550 in winter to US$700 for the sea-view rooms. It is a family and business hotel that happens to own the view every gay visitor wants, and in Pride week the beach party is literally underneath it.

Hotel 75 and the sauna. Hotel 75 by Prima is a three-star boutique at Allenby 75, across from the Nahalat Binyamin mall; Paradise Spa is addressed Allenby 75 too. They share a complex, not an owner, and the hotel is mainstream; but a sauna seven metres from your bed is a fact some readers will want.

Rothschild luxury. The Norman (two 1920s buildings on Nachmani, rooftop pool, Dinings restaurant, US$600 and up) is where gay money stays; R48 on Rothschild 48 is the newer garden hotel; Montefiore is twelve rooms above the brasserie; Elkonin, the city's first hotel (1913) reborn with a rooftop pool, sits on the Neve Tzedek edge; Vera and Rothschild 96 are the mid-priced design options.

The beachfront chains. Sheraton Grand (US$450–550, outdoor pool), Dan (indoor and outdoor pools, the striped Agam façade), Carlton (rooftop pool, US$340), Herods, Isrotel Tower, Royal Beach (Isrotel markets it around Pride), David Kempinski, InterContinental David (which calls itself the official hotel of Tel Aviv Pride). All kosher, all with pools and shelters, all equally indifferent to who you are.

Jaffa. The Setai (a Crusader fortress and Ottoman prison, 120 rooms, rooftop infinity pool, hammam), The Jaffa (a 19th-century French hospital and convent, outdoor pool, John Pawson interiors) and The Drisco (1866, American Colony, rooftop pool). The Diaghilev on Mazeh and the Shenkin Hotel on Brenner are the apartment-style boutiques in the centre. Abraham Hostel on Levontin is the hostel with the rooftop bar. The Aby, a 40-room hotel in the old Zamir cinema at Allenby and Ben Yehuda, was delayed a year by missile damage and is due to open soon.

Who changed

Closed: Shpagat (Nahalat Binyamin 43, 2024), Layla Bar (Yavne, end of 2024), Pink House TLV guesthouse, the Selina hostels (2024–25), Beef (replaced by Biste), Evita (years ago). In Jerusalem, Video Pub, the city's only gay bar, closed in June 2026. Opened: Callas TLV (November 2025), the Hamam sauna (November 2025), Biste at Shenkin 10 (November 2025); Mash Central rebuilt and reopened 30 October 2025, four months after the missile. Restored to our listings: Brown BoBo, PLAY Levontin and the Setai, all open and wrongly archived. Corrected: See The Sea Hotel's pin was nine kilometres inland; it is by the port. Coming: the Aby on Allenby.

Rules, fees, Shabbat and bringing someone back

Entry. Visa-exempt nationals (EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and most others) need an ETA-IL electronic travel authorisation, mandatory since 1 January 2025: ILS 25 (about US$8), two years, multiple entries, applied for online, usually approved within a day or two. Passports are not stamped; you get a blue B/2 entry card at the airport. Keep it: it is your VAT exemption.

The 18 per cent you do not pay. VAT in Israel is 18 per cent since January 2025, and tourists holding a B/2 entry card pay none of it on hotel rooms, hotel meals charged to the room and car hire. The hotel removes it at billing when you show passport and card; pay as an Israeli resident would and you pay the tax. A proposal to scrap the exemption surfaced in May 2026 and had not passed when this guide was written. The shekel is strong, about ILS 3.05 to the dollar, and the city is not cheap: Atlas boutiques from US$180, beachfront chains US$350–550, the Norman and the Jaffa hotels US$600 and up, a cocktail ILS 55–70, a shakshuka breakfast ILS 60. Cards and contactless work everywhere; Bit and PayBox, the local payment apps, need an Israeli bank account. Tip 12–15 per cent in restaurants, nothing in taxis.

Visitors. Israeli hotels register each guest's passport; a visitor coming up to your room is normal, may be asked for ID at the desk, and is never charged. No hotel in the city has a published joiner policy because none has ever needed one. Hostels bar non-guests from dorms.

Shabbat. From about an hour before sunset on Friday to an hour after sunset on Saturday, trains, buses and the light rail stop; Tel Aviv runs a limited free weekend bus network (Na'im BaSofash) including a line to the airport; sheruts (shared minibuses) run; Gett and Yango work with a surcharge. In the chain hotels one elevator stops at every floor automatically, breakfast is served, check-in is fine; the Carmel Market and most of Allenby shut, Rothschild and the beach do not. Yom Kippur (Sunday evening 10 October to Monday night 11 October 2027) closes the airport, every shop and every road for 25 hours; the city cycles down the empty highways. Passover (21–28 April 2027) means no bread in kosher hotels and the highest rates of the spring. Purim, when the whole city is in costume and the gay parties peak, falls on Tuesday 23 March 2027.

Sirens. If a siren sounds you have about 90 seconds in Tel Aviv. Every hotel has a protected area (a miklat shelter, a mamad safe room on each floor, or a reinforced stairwell); staff will direct you; stay ten minutes; a missile from Yemen means one short siren and a brief pause at the airport. Download the Home Front Command app in English on arrival. This is routine for Israelis and will be explained at check-in without drama.

The security situation, honestly

The Gaza ceasefire of 10 October 2025 held through 2026 in the sense that no rockets have reached Tel Aviv since; the living hostages came home that month and the last body in January 2026; the second phase, withdrawal and reconstruction, has stalled, Israel holds most of Gaza, and aid groups call it a ceasefire in name only. In late February 2026 the United States and Israel struck Iran, Iran fired some 650 missiles at Israel over six weeks, Tel Aviv was hit several times with a handful of deaths, Ben Gurion airport closed, and a ceasefire took effect on 8 April 2026; missiles flew again for two days in June; by October the US and Iran were trading limited strikes and talking, Israel was still striking south Lebanon, and Hezbollah had not fully re-entered the war. Houthi missiles from Yemen, all intercepted, came in spring and June and then stopped.

What that means for a visitor in late 2026: Ben Gurion has been fully open since 9 April; El Al, Delta, United, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, ITA, LOT, Wizz, Ryanair, Etihad and, from 25 October, British Airways and Iberia are flying; American, Air Canada and flydubai are not. The United Kingdom lifted its advice against all travel on 8 June 2026 and now warns only against Gaza, parts of the West Bank and the northern border, so British insurance is valid in Tel Aviv; the United States keeps Israel at Level 3, "reconsider travel". Most policies exclude war-related cancellation but still pay medical claims. Tourist arrivals in 2026 are running at a third of 2019 and Tel Aviv hotel occupancy was 40 per cent in the first half of the year, which has not made rooms cheap but has made them available. You will find a city that is tired, loud, grieving, argumentative and completely open. Israel votes on 27 October 2026; this section will need rewriting whatever the result.

Pride, TLVFest and the weeks that matter

Pride 2026: Friday 12 June. The first parade in three years. In 2024 the march was replaced by a rally for the hostages; in 2025 it was cancelled a few hours before it was due to start on 13 June, when Israel struck Iran at dawn, and three days later the missile took out Mash Central. In 2026 about 100,000 people (the municipality said more, Ynet said 120,000) walked from Gordon Beach along a sealed-off promenade to the party at Charles Clore Park, with eight floats, a thousand police, Netta premiering the Pride song, and a row over police banning anti-government signs. It was a quarter the size of 2019 and it was enormous. The 2027 parade is not announced; the pattern is the second Friday of June, which would be 11 June 2027. Pride week fills the Hilton beach, Hangar 11 (Forever), HaOman 17 and every hotel between the beach and Rothschild; book by March, expect three-night minimums and double rates.

The rest of the year. TLVFest, the international LGBTQ film festival, runs 22 to 31 October 2026 at the Cinematheque. Forever Tel Aviv, the circuit brand, celebrates twenty years on 19 and 20 November 2026 and traditionally runs a New Year party. Purim (23 March 2027) is the gay costume weekend; Passover brings families and high prices; July and August are 32 degrees and humid, with the beach at its busiest and prices at their highest; October is the sweet spot, warm sea, the holidays over, rates a notch down. Eurovision will not be in Israel in 2027.

Three picks per budget

Under US$150. Abraham Hostel (private room) for the Levontin bars; Hotel 75 for a plain room in the Allenby thick of it; Ben Yehuda Apartments for a studio ten minutes from the gay beach.

US$180–350. Shalom & Relax or Melody for the beach; Brown TLV or Lily & Bloom for the bars; INTA for the gay hotel and Jaffa.

US$500 and up. Hilton for the beach under the window; The Norman for Rothschild; The Setai or The Jaffa for old stone and a pool.

Getting in late and getting around

Ben Gurion to the city. The train from the airport to HaShalom, Savidor Central or HaHagana costs ILS 13.50, takes 15 to 20 minutes and runs around the clock except Shabbat; from the stations it is a short taxi or the Red Line light rail to Allenby or Carlebach. Taxis from the official rank, booked through Gett at the stand, are about ILS 150–200 to the centre, 25 per cent more at night and on Shabbat. There is no Uber; Gett is the standard app, Yango is cheaper and takes foreign cards. On Shabbat the sheruts and taxis are the only way in.

In town. Buy a Rav-Kav card or use the Rav-Pass app for buses and the light rail (about ILS 6 a ride); the Red Line runs Jaffa, Allenby, Carlebach and on to Petah Tikva, not on Shabbat. Lime and Bird scooters are everywhere (helmet required, not on the promenade); Tel-O-Fun bikes too. The seafront promenade runs unbroken from Jaffa to the port: Jaffa to the Hilton beach is 5.5 kilometres, Rothschild to the Hilton beach 3. Street crime is low; the dangers are scooters, the sun, jellyfish in August and rip currents, swim between the flags.

The one safety rule that is gay-specific. The Aguda, Israel's LGBTQ association, counted more than twenty dating-app ambushes in late 2024 and 2025, fake profiles luring men to meetings where groups attacked them, mostly outside Tel Aviv. Meet in a public place first, let the hotel know who is coming up, and treat the Carmel Market and the central bus station as pickpocket territory. Emergency numbers: 100 police, 101 ambulance (Magen David Adom), 104 Home Front Command.

Health

PEP is available at hospital emergency rooms within 72 hours; Ichilov (Sourasky Medical Center, Weizmann 6) is the central one and is on the UK government's list; a tourist pays the emergency fee (about ILS 1,100–1,300) plus the drugs, and travel insurance usually reimburses. PrEP is prescribed by trained doctors through the health funds; the Gan Meir LGBT clinic is the reference point for residents; bring your own supply. Free anonymous testing: the Health Ministry's Levinsky Clinic (listed at Pines Street 43, with a second clinic on the fourth floor of the new central bus station at Levinsky 108) tests anyone free of charge; the Gan Meir Center tests on Sunday evenings 17:00–19:00 without ID, rapid HIV ILS 120. The Israel AIDS Task Force runs chemsex support. Mpox: a 2022 cluster, nothing since; two-dose vaccination is recommended for men who have sex with men. Tap water is fine; the sun is not.

Tel Aviv in a paragraph

The Aguda was founded in October 1975 by eleven gay men and a lesbian; sex between men was decriminalised in 1988; the first parade was 1993; Dana International won Eurovision in 1998 and the parade became a party; the Gan Meir centre, the first municipal gay centre in the country, opened in 2008; a gunman killed two at the Bar Noar youth club in 2009 and was never caught; Pride hit 250,000 in 2019, Asia's largest. The city sold itself as the gay capital of the Middle East, was accused of pinkwashing the occupation, and kept going. Gay men have cruised Independence Park since the 1960s and swum below it ever since. Underneath the slogans there is a flat, humid, Bauhaus city of a quarter of a million people who call it the bubble (ha-bu'a), eat hummus at Abu Hassan in Jaffa, drink hafuch on Rothschild, argue about everything, go to the beach on Shabbat, and since October 2023 have buried too many friends. Come in October, stay near the sea or near the bars, learn the word sofash, and bring a hat.
