Last verified: October 2026. Chicago has no men-only, gay-only or clothing-optional hotel in 2026. Two small B&Bs have a long gay following. The Villa Toscana has 8 rooms and is adults-only, right on North Halsted. Villa D'Citta has 6 rooms in a Lincoln Park greystone. The old leather guesthouse in Rogers Park, Ashland Arms, shows no sign of taking guests: there is no website and the last reviews are more than a decade old. Every other bed in town is mainstream, so the choice that matters is location. Northalsted (still called Boystown by nearly everyone) has a handful of small hotels within a 10-minute walk of the bars. Andersonville has one guesthouse and a few B&Bs. Downtown has dozens of towers that sit 20 to 25 minutes away on the Red Line. This guide covers which blocks to sleep on and what each one costs you at 3 am. It also covers the 2026 tax change, IML, Pride and Market Days in 2027, and the health and safety basics.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

The walkable zone is smaller than the maps suggest. The core is North Halsted Street between Belmont and Addison, which is half a mile of rainbow pylons with the Legacy Walk plaques on them. North Broadway, one block east, adds The Closet and Wang's. Clark Street, two blocks west, has Shakers. Draw a box from Diversey (2800 N) to Addison (3600 N), and from the lake to Clark, and you have the area where walking home makes sense. North of Addison it turns into Wrigleyville sports bars. South of Diversey it is Lincoln Park, which is pleasant, residential and asleep by midnight. Andersonville, 3 miles north along Clark Street, is the second gay district. It is quieter and older, with more lesbians, and its bars mostly close at 2 am.

On Halsted and Broadway (Roscoe to Cornelia)

Villa Toscana is the only place that puts you on Halsted itself. It sits in an 1890s Victorian house at 3447 N Halsted (some listings, ours included, give 3445). Hydrate and Elixir are across the street. Little Jim's is 1 minute away, and Roscoe's and Sidetrack are 2–3 minutes away. It has 8 themed rooms with keyless entry and self check-out, and it is adults-only. Front rooms hear Halsted at closing time, which is 4 am on weeknights and 5 am on Saturday night for bars with late licences. Ask for the back.

Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace is at 3434 N Broadway, 2–3 minutes from Roscoe's and 8–10 minutes from the middle of the strip. It is the most practical hotel in the neighbourhood: a lift, a front desk at 3 am and predictable rooms. Broadway is lit and busy, so the walk back is a non-event.

The quieter edges: Brompton, Belmont, Clark

The Majestic Hotel is on residential Brompton Avenue, east of Broadway. It is 6–8 minutes from the nearest bar and 12–14 minutes from the centre of the strip, and 5 minutes from the lakefront path. It is the quietest bed in Lakeview within walking range.

City Suites Hotel at 933 W Belmont is 3–4 minutes from Halsted and Belmont and 8–10 minutes from Sidetrack. The Belmont L station is next door, which is handy for downtown. The Red Line runs all night, though, so light sleepers should ask for a room away from the tracks. The Belmont and Clark corner a block west has had a long reputation for late-night loitering. Walk along Belmont towards Halsted, not up Clark.

Hotel Zachary faces Wrigley Field from 3630 N Clark. It is 8–9 minutes to Halsted at Addison, where Cellblock, Fantasy and Center on Halsted are, and 11–13 minutes to Roscoe's. It is the best-reviewed hotel in the area and also the most expensive (about US$200–450, confirm). On Cubs home games and summer stadium concerts, Clark Street fills with straight sports-bar crowds and room rates jump. Check the Cubs calendar before you book.

Diversey and the Lincoln Park edge

Hotel Versey (644 W Diversey) and the Willows Hotel (555 W Surf) are 12–16 minutes from Lucky Horseshoe at the Belmont end and 22–26 minutes from the middle of the strip. Broadway is the walk home and it stays lit, but it is a real walk in winter, and the 36 Broadway bus is the fallback. The Inn at Lincoln Park across the road is cheaper, but it is older and averages 3.5, so read the recent reviews first.

Villa D'Citta is at 2230 N Halsted, 30–32 minutes on foot from Lucky Horseshoe. In practice you take one or two stops from Fullerton on the Red or Brown Line, about 5 minutes of riding. You go there for the house rather than the location.

Andersonville, Uptown and Rogers Park

Andersonville's gay bars sit along Clark between Foster and Bryn Mawr: Sofo, Meeting House Tavern, Atmosphere (for dancing) and Marty's. Big Chicks is on Sheridan to the east. House 5863 on Glenwood is 15–18 minutes from Atmosphere, 12–14 minutes from the Granville Anvil and 21–24 minutes from Hollywood Beach. The rooms are apartment-style, and reviews are mixed (3.8). The Guesthouse Hotel at 4866 N Clark (not in our listings, so no link) is a family-owned suite hotel with about 10 units. It has long been an LGBTQ favourite, and it puts you a 5-minute walk from the Clark Street bars. Confirm rates directly.

Uptown, between the two districts, has the Baton Show Lounge and, according to our listings, the revived Chicago Eagle, both at 4713 N Broadway. It has no hotel we would send you to. Further north, The Greenleaf House in Rogers Park is a 7–8 minute walk from Rogers Park Social and 23–26 minutes from Touche and Jackhammer at Clark and Devon. It is a sensible base for a leather-weekend side trip to the Leather Archives & Museum on Greenview Avenue.

Downtown: River North, Streeterville, the Loop

Downtown has exactly one gay bar, Second Story Bar at 157 E Ohio. The Courtyard Downtown/Magnificent Mile is 1–2 minutes from it, the InterContinental 2–3 minutes, the Fairfield Inn & Suites 3 minutes, and The Peninsula 6–8 minutes. For Halsted, take the Red Line from Grand or Chicago to Belmont, about 15 minutes of riding, or a rideshare for about US$15–30. The Gold Coast hotels, such as Sofitel, Thompson and Claridge House, shave a few minutes off via Clark/Division. The Loop hotels, including the Kimpton Gray (24–26 minutes even to Second Story), are empty office canyons after 10 pm. Take a car home.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Here is the short version for 2026. No hotel or guesthouse in Chicago is men-only or clothing-optional. None of the gay-popular places restrict who can book.

    • Villa Toscana has 8 rooms and is adults-only. It markets itself to LGBTQ guests and is listed in gay directories as gay-friendly. We could not confirm current gay ownership, so treat it as gay-welcoming rather than gay-run. It is open and taking bookings for 2027.
    • Villa D'Citta has 6 rooms in an owner-occupied greystone and has held a city B&B licence since 2009. It has a rooftop deck with whirlpool and a shared kitchen with breakfast. It was still trading in 2026, with Yelp updated July 2026 and a 4.9 Google average from more than 650 reviews. It has a strong record with gay couples, but it is not a gay-only house, and we could not verify ownership.
    • Ashland Arms Guest House at 6410 N Clark was a leather-themed guesthouse above the bars at Clark and Devon. We found no website, no 2025–2026 reviews and no booking channel. Treat it as closed unless you reach someone by phone.
    • Lang House B&B at 7421 N Sheridan in Rogers Park (not in our listings) was gay-owned according to a 2014 Windy City Times profile. Its current status and ownership are unverified, so confirm before booking.
    • Steamworks Chicago at 3246 N Halsted is a men's bathhouse with private rooms. It is not accommodation, and nobody should plan a trip around sleeping there.

Everyone else stays in mainstream hotels, and in Chicago that is not a compromise. The Illinois Human Rights Act bars discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity in public accommodations, and that includes hotels. A double bed for two men raises nothing at any front desk in this city.

    Booking rules that bite

    • Hotel tax. The combined state, county and city hotel tax is about 17.4%. Since 1 May 2026, hotels with 100 or more rooms in downtown ZIP codes add a 1.5% Tourism Improvement District charge, so about 19% at the big River North, Streeterville and Loop towers. The small Lakeview and Andersonville places stay at about 17.4%. Check the folio, because the new charge is itemised separately.
    • Fees. Some downtown hotels add a nightly "destination" or "amenity" fee. Since May 2025, US federal rules require short-term lodging to show the total price including mandatory fees, so compare totals rather than headline rates. Valet parking downtown is expensive, and in Lakeview street parking is permit-only on many blocks and banned around Wrigley on game days.
    • Deposits and age. Expect a card pre-authorisation for incidentals, typically about US$50–150 per night (confirm). Many Chicago hotels require the person checking in to be 21 or over.
    • Visitors. There are no joiner fees and no police registration of visitors in the US. The catch is in the building. Most towers need a keycard for the lift, so you go down to collect your date, and some B&Bs have house rules about non-guests. Hostel dorms do not allow guests.
    • The tip. Book two adults even if the second person is a maybe. Rates rarely change, both of you get keys, and the B&Bs know how many people to expect.
    • Minimum stays and cancellations. On Pride, Market Days and IML weekends, expect two- or three-night minimums at the B&Bs and non-refundable rates at the Lakeview hotels. Book flexible when you can, and as early as you can.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

International Mr Leather: Memorial Day weekend 2027 (dates TBA)

IML runs Thursday to Monday over Memorial Day weekend, and Memorial Day falls on 31 May in 2027. As of October 2026 the organiser has not confirmed the 2027 dates or the host hotel. Third-party listings named the Congress Plaza Hotel on South Michigan Avenue (not in our listings) as the 2026 host. If that holds, the Blackstone, a block south, and Le Méridien Essex are walkable alternatives. The host hotel's block usually sells out early. Many people stay in Lakeview and ride the Red Line between the contest and the bars, with Cellblock, Touche, Jackhammer and the Eagle doing late nights.

Chicago Pride Parade: Sunday 27 June 2027

The parade runs through Uptown and Northalsted rather than downtown. Pride Fest, the Halsted street festival the weekend before, and Navy Pier Pride had no 2027 dates announced as of October 2026. Lakeview rooms are the hardest to get in the city that week. Book 6–9 months out, or stay downtown and accept a crowded Red Line. On parade Sunday, streets around Broadway and Halsted close from late morning, so rideshares cannot reach the strip hotels.

Northalsted Market Days: 6–8 August 2027

The organiser has confirmed Market Days for Friday 6 to Sunday 8 August 2027. Halsted between Belmont and Addison is fenced off, with stages, vendors and a suggested donation at the gates. Villa Toscana is inside the festival zone and Best Western Hawthorne Terrace is a block outside it. Both are hard to book and noisy until late. The Majestic and City Suites are the best compromise. Book 4–6 months ahead.

    Other dates

Halloween on Halsted is tonight, 31 October 2026. The 2027 Northalsted Halloween events had not been published at the time of writing. Bear Pride Chicago has traditionally been held in late winter, but we could not confirm 2027 dates.

    Getting back at 3 am

    • O'Hare. The Blue Line runs 24 hours; the fare from O'Hare is about US$5 (confirm). The cleanest route to Lakeview is the Blue Line to Belmont, about 30 minutes, then the 77 Belmont bus east to Halsted, about 20–25 minutes, which runs through the night. Note that the Blue Line's Belmont station is in Avondale, about 4 km west of the gay district, so do not try to walk it with luggage. Rideshare or taxi to Lakeview takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic and costs about US$40–65 plus tip.
    • Midway. Take the Orange Line to Roosevelt, then the Red Line north to Belmont, about 50–60 minutes. The Orange Line does not run overnight, so after it closes take a rideshare, which costs about US$35–55.
    • From the bars. The Red Line runs 24 hours and stops at Belmont and Addison for Lakeview, Wilson and Lawrence for Uptown, and Berwyn and Bryn Mawr for Andersonville. The Brown Line does not run all night. Late at night, ride in the first car near the operator. The 22 Clark bus also runs overnight.
    • Apps. Uber and Lyft work everywhere and are the normal choice. Curb hails licensed taxis. Halsted at closing time has a queue of cars, so walk a block to Broadway for a faster pickup.
    • Walking. Halsted, Broadway and Belmont are lit and busy until closing. The side streets between them are residential and fine, but dark. Avoid lingering at Belmont and Clark. In Uptown, take a car rather than walking from the Wilson or Lawrence stations late at night. Downtown, the Loop is deserted after 10 pm, and River North's Hubbard Street is loud with straight club crowds.

    Health, safety and the law

    • Clinic. Howard Brown Health at 4025 N Sheridan Rd is a 15–18 minute walk from Halsted and Addison. It is Chicago's LGBTQ health organisation and offers PrEP, testing and PEP, but it has cut some services in recent years, so check current walk-in hours before you go. For PEP outside clinic hours, go to the 24-hour emergency department at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, 836 W Wellington Ave, about 8 minutes from Halsted and Belmont. Center on Halsted at 3656 N Halsted is the community centre and can point you to testing.
    • Dates from apps. In past years Chicago police have issued community alerts about robberies arranged through dating apps. We could not verify specific 2025–2026 cases this session. The rules still apply: meet in a bar first, tell a friend the address, keep your phone and wallet in the hotel safe, and never let anyone pick the lock-up spot.
    • Drugs. Cannabis is legal to buy at licensed dispensaries for adults 21 and over. It is illegal to use in public, in parks and on the lakefront, and nearly every hotel bans smoking it in rooms, with cleaning fees. GHB, meth, cocaine and ketamine are criminal offences in Illinois. Hotels will call police and charge you for damage if a chemsex party goes wrong.
    • Smoking. Indoor smoking and vaping are banned in Chicago bars and restaurants. Most hotels are entirely non-smoking.
    • Beaches and parks. Hollywood Beach is the city's unofficial gay beach and is reached by the Red Line or the 147 bus. Chicago parks and beaches close at 11 pm. Public indecency is a criminal offence, and that includes Montrose Point.
    • Law. Same-sex relationships and marriage are fully legal. Illinois adds state protections in housing, employment and public accommodations, including for trans people.

Three picks

Budget: City Suites Hotel. It is 3–4 minutes to Halsted and Belmont, has a 24-hour train next door and is usually the cheapest private room within real walking distance of the bars (often about US$130–250 outside event weeks, confirm). Ask for a room away from the tracks.

Mid-range: Villa Toscana. No other bed in Chicago is closer to the bars: Hydrate is across the street and Roscoe's is 2–3 minutes away. It is adults-only, has 8 rooms and suits a couple who want to walk everywhere. Book the back of the house.

Splurge: The Peninsula Chicago. Lakeview has no luxury hotel, so you choose between luxury and walking. The Peninsula wins on the first: it has big rooms and a top-floor pool, it is 6–8 minutes from Second Story Bar, and a rideshare to Halsted takes about 15–25 minutes. If you want to stay north, Hotel Zachary is the closest Lakeview gets.
