Black Sheep Restaurant

Enjoyed the seafood chowder and ginger beer at Black Sheep. Mostly baby shrimp and mussels rather than the halibut and scallops in the chowder, I’ve enjoyed some that are loaded up with everything but this one favoured the sauce. Make your way to the rooftop patio to enjoy the weather, views of a nearby art gallery at street for people watching. Staff were friendly and kind, willing to help with any questions you had. Current menu prices are a bit higher than some of the photos on the current google listing.

Had a really disappointing meal here. This was my first time here in a few years and I will not rush back. We had lunch on a Saturday - I ordered the lobster roll (and asked the server if it was good and fresh, she assured me it was “really good”). Well it was incredibly disappointing, minced mystery fish with maybe 3 pieces of lobster claw thrown in, on a stale bun. It completely turned me off. Someone else got the grilled cheese and tomato soup which used to be amazing here - the grilled cheese completely fell off. The service was incredibly average. Disappointing! And I’m embarrassed as a local for somewhere on the waterfront with likely lots of tourists visiting to sell a lobster roll of that quality.

Food was good, portions were small service was very poor. I think some staff need training. We left hungry and went for desert elsewhere . The decor is outstanding

I really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. Really have no complaints or issues. The chicken burger was tasty. The bagel was excellent. The grilled cheese was a solid bread. Oh and the Creamsicle was a delightful alcohol free mocktail. My kid loved that. Actually, the Ramen noodles could have had more noodles, but it all tasted very good.

A restaurant in Alexander Keith’s brewery, and it serves creative breakfasts?!? Sign me up! We were there for breakfast. We had the “classic” and Shakshuka - both well executed: scrambled eggs were fluffy, and over easy were served with that onctuous yolk that is hard to come by, these days, in many establishments. Bacon with the classic was thick cut (you read that right: it’s not transparent) and it was tasting pork - not salt! - as it should be. Bread served with the classic is a long, single slice of artisan bread: elevated. The breakfast comes with fried and squid ink aioli, or salad (ie brunch format). They offer also and half-and-half, so you get both in smaller portions. A side of jams completes the dish. The shakshuka (pictured) was rich with its tomato-based stew, and a refreshing start to the day with its cheese. We are looking forward to return!

A party of six and all loved their choices from oyster starters that were shucked well (no shell shards, lobster ravioli, lobster roll, hodge podge, ramen and Mac and cheese. All desserts were sampled and loved. We also loved the setting and our server was on point. Like food terminators, we’ll be back.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An absolute gem in Halifax—outstanding food, drinks, and atmosphere! Black Sheep exceeded all expectations. We had an incredible dinner, and the quality across every dish was top-tier: Pan-Seared Halibut: Beautiful sear, moist fish, and a delicious sauce that tied the dish together. Lobster Roll: Generously packed with fresh lobster meat and great seasoning. The squid ink dip for the fries was a fun touch. Seafood Chowder & Focaccia: Rich, flavorful chowder paired with warm, freshly made focaccia with butter. Chocolate & Coffee Dessert: A must-order. The triple chocolate mousse with espresso ice cream was the highlight of the night. The multi-level historic stone building has so much character—moody and cozy inside, with a fantastic 3rd-floor rooftop patio. Even with a light rain, the patio vibe was relaxed and memorable. Great service throughout. Highly recommended when in Halifax!
