The Art Institute of Chicago: a sprawling collection that makes for a surprisingly good afternoon, even if you’re not an art obsessive.
This isn't just a museum for people who know their Rothkos from their Rauschenbergs. Sure, it's internationally known, and its collection spans centuries and movements. But the Modern Wing, added in 2009, opened it up, making it feel less like a stuffy institution and more like a place you might actually want to hang out in.
You’ll wander through the Pritzker Galleries, where the big hitters live, then maybe stumble into the Thorne miniature rooms. These tiny, perfectly rendered historical interiors are oddly mesmerizing. Picasso, Matisse, Chagall are all here, of course, but so are unexpected pieces across painting, sculpture, photography, and decorative arts. You could spend a full day, but a few hours will give you a solid taste.
It's smack in the middle of Chicago, easy to get to, and they do a good job of making everyone feel welcome, including LGBTQ+ travelers. Head to their website for current hours, ticket prices, and what’s on view.
