If you're in Dallas for the gay scene, stay in Oak Lawn or Uptown. Both are walkable or a short Uber from Cedar Springs Road. Uptown also has good restaurants, coffee shops, and things to do during the day beyond the bars. Downtown Dallas works if you want lower prices or are mixing business with pleasure; it's ten to fifteen minutes by rideshare from Oak Lawn.
Dallas hotels cost less than in comparable neighborhoods in New York or Los Angeles. A decent mid-range hotel in Uptown runs $100-180 a night, unless it's Pride weekend. During the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade in late September, prices jump and Oak Lawn fills up fast—book early.
Where to Stay
Oak Lawn and Uptown
These are the closest areas to Cedar Springs. Stay here and you can walk to the bars instead of calling a rideshare at 1am. Uptown has lots of hotels, from boutiques to big chains. The West Village is a particularly nice part of Uptown to base yourself: good restaurants, walkable streets, and close to the scene.
Downtown Dallas
Downtown Dallas has fine hotels, often cheaper than Uptown. The catch is you'll need a rideshare to Cedar Springs. It's not a huge hassle, and downtown puts you near DART rail if you want public transit. The Arts District is especially pleasant if you're into museums and galleries during the day, as well as nightlife.
Love Field Area
If you're flying Southwest into Love Field (DAL), the surrounding area has a bunch of business hotels. It's a quick Uber to Oak Lawn—about ten minutes in normal traffic. Not the most atmospheric place to stay, but it's practical if you're on a budget or arriving late.
The Hotels
- Altitude W Dallas - Victory Hotel — In Texas, you go big. The W Dallas - Victory does big: bigger, bolder, brasher. Lasso sculptures and armadillo skin details are everywhere. It's minutes from museums and festival sites.
- Ellen's — Bosscheweg has self-catering apartments with free WiFi in Tilburg, just 0.6 miles from the city center. The main train station is 0.9 miles away. Each apartment has a TV, a balcony, and a terrace. The private bathroom has a bath or shower. You can cook in the kitchen.
- Hyatt Regency Dallas — This 1,120-room high-rise sits across from Union Station, 1.6 miles from the Dallas Museum of Art and 3 miles from the Dallas Zoo. The polished rooms and suites have pillow-top mattresses, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, minifridges, coffeemakers, and desks. WiFi costs extra. Upgraded rooms have big city views. Suites include separate living rooms. Dining choices include a coffee shop, a casual cafe, and a Wolfgang Puck restaurant with panoramic city views.
- Residence Inn-Dupont Circle — This all-suite hotel is a 5-minute walk from the Dupont Circle Metro Station and 1.5 miles from the White House. Suites come with 1 to 2 bedrooms, free WiFi, full kitchens, desks, and pull-out sofas, plus flat-screen TVs with premium cable. 2-bedroom suites have an extra bathroom.
Booking Tips
Dallas Pride in late September is the only time Oak Lawn hotels book up well in advance. For Pride weekend, book at least two to three months ahead, especially if you want to walk to Cedar Springs.
Outside of Pride, Dallas hotels are usually available with reasonable notice. Spring and fall are popular for general visitors because of the weather, so rates might be higher from March to May and October to November, but not drastically.
Most Uptown hotels are non-smoking. Dallas has some Airbnb apartments in Oak Lawn and nearby if you prefer that.
