Plaza Romantyczna (gay section)

Plaza Romantyczna (Romantic Beach) is a wild, sandy stretch of the Vistula's right bank in the Wawer district, roughly 10km south of central Warsaw. Beyond the family section near the entrance, the quieter southern reaches have served for years as an informal gay riverside hangout, busiest on hot summer weekends. Getting there is half the point: the riverside bike path from the centre takes about 40 minutes and is one of the nicest rides in the city. There is no infrastructure on the wild sections - no bars, no lifeguards, no toilets - so bring water and take everything back with you. Swimming in the Vistula is officially discouraged due to currents; most people come to sunbathe and socialise rather than swim. The atmosphere is relaxed and tolerated rather than officially designated. Standard discretion applies as in any public space in Poland; daytime visits on summer weekends are when the section is liveliest.
