Gay Port-Louis

Port Louis sits on the northwest coast of Mauritius, cradled between the harbour and the central mountain ridge that divides the island. It is first and foremost a working capital — government buildings, ministries, the financial district, the Central Market — but it has a genuine urban character shaped by its remarkable cultural diversity: Creole, Indian (both Hindu and Muslim), French, Chinese, and British influences have layered over centuries to produce a city unlike any other in the Indian Ocean. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Port Louis functions primarily as an entry and transit point rather than as a destination in itself. Most visitors fly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the south of the island and transfer directly to resort hotels on the east, north, or west coasts.

Those who do spend time in the capital will find it comfortable and professionally hospitable, if relatively quiet in terms of LGBTQ+ social life specifically. The Caudan Waterfront is the most visitor-oriented zone in Port Louis — a developed harbour complex with restaurants, bars, a casino, and shopping that caters to both business visitors and tourists. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosmopolitan by Mauritian standards.

Food & Drink

The restaurants range from fast casual to decent sit-down dining. The casino, operated under international management, functions as a social hub for the island's diverse population and visiting travelers. Le Caudan Waterfront area also contains the Blue Penny Museum (home to the famous Mauritius 'Post Office' stamp, one of the world's rarest), the craft market, and access to harbour boat trips. For a city half-day, the combination of the Caudan, the Central Market, and the waterfront area covers Port Louis's essential character well.

The Chinese Quarter and Jummah Mosque area in the city center offer excellent street food and a concentrated experience of the island's multicultural character. Mauritian Creole cuisine — the island's own fusion of Indian, African, French, and Chinese culinary traditions — is best explored in the Central Market's food stalls.

Where to stay

Port Louis's accommodation — the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, the Hennessey Park Hotel in the financial district, and several business hotel brands — provides professional, welcoming environments for LGBTQ+ travelers. Same-sex couples will encounter no issues at any internationally operated property on the island post-2023 decriminalisation. For the full Mauritius resort experience, however, Port Louis is a waypoint rather than a destination: the extraordinary properties on the east coast (Anahita area, Belle Mare Plage), the north (Grand Baie), or the west (Flic en Flac, Le Morne) are where the island's internationally celebrated hospitality operates at its finest.
