Quebec City's hotels mostly sit in and around Old Town, especially in the upper town near Chateau Frontenac and along Grande-Allee. You could stay in Saint-Roch, the gay-friendly lower-town neighborhood, but there aren't as many hotels there.
Old Town hotels
Old Town hotels give you the most obvious tourist setup: close to the historic sites, the Frontenac, the Plains of Abraham, and the wall. They're the go-to for first-timers who want to be right in the historic center. The upper town is walkable, and the views from up here are the best you'll get in Quebec City.
From Old Town down to Saint-Roch is a downhill walk. It's fine either way, but that uphill trek at the end of the night? You'll feel it. The funiculaire near the Chateau Frontenac connects upper and lower town for a small fare.
Saint-Roch accommodation
Saint-Roch has a smaller, but growing, boutique hotel scene. Stay here and you're in the gay-friendly neighborhood, walking distance to the bars on Rue Saint-Joseph Est, and in a neighborhood with great restaurants and coffee shops. It's less touristy, more residential than Old Town, which some visitors prefer.
Cost
Quebec City hotels are much cheaper than Montreal's. This isn't a small difference—a mid-range hotel in Quebec City will usually cost less than a comparable one in Montreal. If budget is your priority, Quebec City is a good value Canadian destination.

Practical notes
- Best base: Old Town for history; Saint-Roch for the gay scene and a more local feel.
- Winter Carnival: January/February, the city gets packed, prices go up. Book way ahead if you're coming then.
- Summer: July and August are busy. Old Town especially fills with tourists.
- Value: Much cheaper than Montreal. Good value for a Canadian city.
