Last verified: November 2026. Zürich has no men-only hotel, no clothing-optional guesthouse and no gay resort. One small hotel has been marketed to gay travellers for years: PlatZHirsch at Spitalgasse 3, in the middle of the Niederdorf bar lanes. Its ground floor, long the PlatZHirsch bar, now sells itself as a sushi bar and lounge. Every other stay here is a mainstream hotel, so where it sits matters more than any rainbow sticker. The city's gay life runs on two short lanes in the old town (Spitalgasse and Mühlegasse, with Seilergraben above them) and a separate leather and sauna pocket in Kreis 4, about 20–25 minutes' walk away across the river and the railway tracks. This guide covers both: which streets to sleep on and what each hotel means for the walk home. It also covers the CHF 3.50 city tax, guest registration, Pride Fest's return in June 2027 and getting back at 3 am.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Spitalgasse (Niederdorf) | Walk to Kernstrasse (Kreis 4) | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The gay-popular stay | PlatZHirsch Hotel, Spitalgasse 3 (not in our listings) | Under 1 min | 22–25 min | You want to be on the gay lane itself. Small rooms. Reviewers mention thin walls and patchy air-conditioning, and the bar downstairs has changed concept. Confirm the room type before booking. |
| On the Niederdorf strip | Hotel Adler, Alexander Zurich, Wellenberg | 1–4 min | 22–26 min | Bar-hoppers who want to stagger home in 3 minutes. Niederdorfstrasse is loud until late on Friday and Saturday, so ask for a back room. |
| Quieter old town, west bank | Hotel Kindli | 4–6 min | 19–22 min | Couples and first-timers. One bridge from the bars, and the lanes are quiet at night. |
| Luxury | Widder Hotel, Storchen Zurich, The Dolder Grand | 6–8 min (Widder, Storchen); taxi from the Dolder | 19–25 min; taxi from the Dolder | Widder and Storchen are both a short walk from the bars. The Dolder is a spa resort on a hill. You will take a taxi every night. |
| Kreis 4 for leather, saunas and Pride Fest | 25hours Hotel Langstrasse, Greulich Design Hotel, Stay2Night Hostel | 21–32 min | 1–8 min | Männerzone regulars and Pride 2027 (the Fest is on the Kasernenareal). Langstrasse is loud and grubby at 3 am. Read Stay2Night's reviews first. |
| Budget and apartments | Motel One Zürich, Stay Sunday, Leoneck, Hotel Continental | 9–18 min | 13–26 min | Longer stays and tighter budgets. You give up the stumble-home distance, but nothing here is far. |
| Quiet, uphill or out west | Plattenhof, Sorell Hotel Seefeld, 25hours Hotel Zurich West | 10–13 min down from Plattenhof; 23 min or more from the others | 30–45 min, or the tram | Sleep over nightlife. 25hours West is closest to the Werdinsel nude bathing spot in summer. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
The walkable gay zone is tiny. On the east bank of the Limmat, Spitalgasse and Mühlegasse cross Niederdorfstrasse a few steps south of Central. Heaven Club, Kweer and the PlatZHirsch building are on Spitalgasse. Predigerhof and the Paragonya sauna are on Mühlegasse. Apollo Sauna is at the top of the slope on Seilergraben. Cranberry is on Metzgergasse, five minutes south, closer to the Rathaus. A circle of about 400 m from Spitalgasse covers nearly all of it, and the old town is flat apart from the climb up to Seilergraben. Kreis 4 is the second pocket. Männerzone is on Kernstrasse, Renos Relax sauna on Brauerstrasse, and Langstrasse's late bars and kebab shops are round them. The walk between the two pockets is 1.4 km: Bahnhofbrücke, the main station, then under the tracks to Langstrasse. Allow 20–25 minutes.

Niederdorf (Kreis 1, east bank): on top of the bars
This is the right answer for most gay visitors on a short trip. Hotel Adler is on Rosengasse, 1–3 minutes from Heaven. It is a 16th-century building with plain, clean rooms and a good reputation for value. Wellenberg is at the Hirschenplatz end, 2–4 minutes away. Alexander Zurich gives its address as Niederdorfstrasse 40, which would put it 1–2 minutes from Spitalgasse. Hotel descriptions online are inconsistent about the address, so check the street on your confirmation before you count on that.
The downside is noise. On Friday and Saturday nights Niederdorfstrasse fills with stag groups and bar crowds until well after 2 am, then delivery vans arrive early. Ask for a courtyard or upper-floor room and bring earplugs. Safety at 3 am is not a real concern here. The lanes are busy, lit and patrolled, and the worst you are likely to meet is a loud drunk.
Lindenhof and Rennweg (west bank old town): one bridge away
Cross the Rudolf-Brun-Brücke or the Rathausbrücke and the old town goes quiet. Hotel Kindli on Pfalzgasse is 4–6 minutes from Spitalgasse. It is small, rooms are individually decorated, and it has a restaurant downstairs. Widder on Rennweg and Storchen on Weinplatz are each 6–8 minutes away. Storchen has the river frontage. Widder is the more interesting building, nine townhouses joined together. The walk back is along the riverside quays or over the bridges, flat, lit and empty in the small hours. This is where to book if you want the bars close but your sleep protected.

Central and Stampfenbach: practical, slightly removed
Leoneck is at Leonhardstrasse 1, just above Central, and 9–11 minutes from Spitalgasse (downhill on the way out, gently uphill on the way back). It has small rooms, cow-themed décor and fair prices for Zürich. Hotel Continental on Stampfenbachstrasse is a business hotel 13–16 minutes from the bars. It is convenient for the station and the airport train but dull at night. Both are quiet sleeps.
Kreis 4 (Langstrasse and Kernstrasse): for the leather end and Pride Fest
Kreis 4 is Zürich's late-night district. It has bars, clubs, sex work and street dealing round Langstrasse, and some of the city's best cheap food. For gay visitors it means Männerzone (bears and leather, with a gear shop), Renos Relax sauna, and Sauna Mylord a little further west on Seebahnstrasse in Wiedikon. In June 2027 it also means the Pride Fest on the Kasernenareal.
25hours Hotel Langstrasse at Langstrasse 150 is 2–3 minutes from Kernstrasse and about 6 minutes from the Kaserne. Rooms are compact. Greulich, on Hermann-Greulich-Strasse, is 6–8 minutes from Männerzone. Its 28 rooms are calmer and many face a courtyard garden. Stay2Night Hostel on Kernstrasse is directly across the street from Männerzone. Its Google average is 2.3, so read the last three months of reviews before paying. From any of these, Niederdorf is a 21–32 minute walk or a short tram ride.
At 3 am Langstrasse between Helvetiaplatz and the railway underpass is loud and a little seedy. It is not dangerous for most visitors, but pickpocketing and phone snatching happen there. Keep your phone in a front pocket and do not stop to chat with people offering you things.

Enge, Selnau and apartments
Motel One in Enge is the usual chain formula, with small, well-designed rooms. It is 15–18 minutes from Spitalgasse and 18–21 from Kreis 4, about halfway between the two, and at Zürich prices it is often the cheapest decent double near the centre. Stay Sunday rents serviced apartments with kitchens and self check-in, and suits stays of a week or more. We list it at Hornergasse 15, roughly 10–12 minutes from Niederdorf and 7–8 from the Kaserne. Confirm the actual building on the booking, because these operators run several addresses.
Uphill, lakeside and out west
Plattenhof, in the residential university quarter, is 10–13 minutes down to Seilergraben and 13–16 back up. The climb is real but short, and the street is silent at night. Sorell Hotel Seefeld is near the opera house and the lake, 23–26 minutes from the bars. Treat it as a lake base and take the tram at night. The Dolder Grand sits on the wooded slope above the city with a 4,000 m² spa. The walk to Niederdorf is over 2 km and uphill on the way home, so budget for taxis. 25hours Hotel Zurich West is in the converted industrial district near Hardbrücke. Kreis 4 is 30-plus minutes away and Niederdorf is not walkable. In summer, though, it is the closest of our hotels to Werdinsel, about 1.5 km away, where the downstream end of the river island has been the city's nude bathing spot for decades.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
There is no men-only hotel or clothing-optional guesthouse anywhere in Zürich in 2026, and we know of none planned. Gay men here stay in mainstream hotels in Niederdorf or Kreis 4. The saunas (Apollo, Paragonya, Renos Relax and Mylord) fill the role that men-only resorts play elsewhere. Check their opening hours yourself, because they change seasonally.
PlatZHirsch Hotel, Spitalgasse 3, is the only hotel that has consistently marketed itself to gay travellers. It has advertised in the Spartacus gay guide, including Pride packages, and appears as a gay pick in the main LGBTQ travel guides. It is a small, three-star-level hotel. Sources disagree on the room count (14 or 23), so confirm when booking. We have not verified who owns it in 2026, so do not book it expecting a gay-run guesthouse. Book it for the address, which is on the gay lane itself. The ground floor was the PlatZHirsch bar, a gay-popular all-day hangout. Booking sites now list the property as a "Downtown Boutique Hotel & Sushi Lounge", and a gay travel guide reports a sushi bar and lounge called Barfüsser on the ground floor. Barfüsser was the name of the historic gay bar across the street. Whether the ground floor still draws a gay crowd in the evening is unverified. The PlatZHirsch Bar page will be updated once we have been back.
The real Barfüsser, opened in the mid-1950s at Spitalgasse 14 and often called one of Europe's oldest gay bars, closed in 2021. Kweer reopened the site as a queer café-bar in October 2022 and is going strong. It celebrated four years with a party weekend in October 2026. Heaven, three doors down at Spitalgasse 5, is still the late dance floor, with weekend parties programmed into November 2026.
Gay travel guides often recommend the Marktgasse Hotel, a design hotel on Marktgasse at the southern end of Niederdorf, about 5 minutes from Spitalgasse. It is mainstream and gay-popular, not gay-run, and it is not in our listings.
Booking rules that bite
- City tax: the canton of Zürich has no statutory tourist tax. Instead, hotels that belong to the Zürich hoteliers' associations charge a City Tax of CHF 3.50 (about US$4) per person per night, VAT included. It is a flat charge, not a percentage, and it is often added at checkout rather than included in the room price. Apartments and non-member hotels may not charge it.
- VAT: Swiss VAT on accommodation is 3.8% and is normally already in the quoted price.
- Guest registration: Swiss law requires hotels to register foreign guests. You will show a passport or national ID at check-in, or upload it for self check-in apartments. Zürich has no joiner-fee culture and nobody at a Swiss front desk will care that your guest is a man. An overnight guest is still a guest, though. Some hotels will want him registered, charge the double-occupancy rate and add the extra CHF 3.50 city tax.
- The golden tip: book every room for 2 guests, even if you arrive alone. A Zürich double costs little more as a double, breakfast is often charged per person, and no question ever comes up at reception.
- Breakfast: it is frequently extra and expensive. A station bakery costs a fraction of a hotel buffet.
- Self check-in apartments: Stay Sunday and similar operators send door codes by email or app. Read the instructions before you land, because there is no desk to help at midnight.
- Cancellation: on big weekends (Pride, Street Parade, Art Weekend) expect non-refundable or 7-day cancellation terms and minimum stays of 2 nights. Prices often double. Book flexible rates early and cancel later rather than gambling on last-minute rooms.
- Prices: Zürich is one of Europe's most expensive hotel cities, and old-town rooms are small for the money. Compare two or three of the hotels above for your exact dates rather than trusting a headline rate.

The gay calendar and where to book for it
Pink Apple queer film festival: 4–13 May 2027
Switzerland's biggest queer film festival runs its 30th edition in Zürich from 4 to 13 May 2027, then moves to Frauenfeld from 14 to 16 May. It is a culture crowd rather than a party one and adds little pressure on hotels. Any of the Niederdorf or west-bank hotels works, and booking 4–6 weeks ahead is enough.

Zurich Pride: 11–12 June 2027
This is the city's main gay weekend. The organisers have confirmed 11 and 12 June 2027. The two-day Pride Fest will be on the Kasernenareal and the Zeughaushof in Kreis 4, with the demonstration through the city centre on Saturday 12 June. The organisers describe the 2027 Fest as a community meeting place with stalls and entertainment, not a big music festival. Details were still being worked out when we checked. For context, 2026 was a lean year. The festival was cancelled for financial reasons and only the Saturday demonstration on 20 June went ahead.
Where to book: for Pride, Kreis 4 beats the old town. 25hours Langstrasse is about 6 minutes from the Kaserne and Stay Sunday roughly 7–8. Greulich and Stay2Night are 7–14 minutes away. The after-parties still pull towards Heaven and Spitalgasse, though, so a Niederdorf hotel is a 16-minute walk from the Fest and steps from the clubs. Zurich Art Weekend runs 11–13 June 2027, the same weekend, which pushes up demand for upscale rooms. Book by January or February 2027. No official partner hotels had been announced as of November 2026.
Street Parade: 14 August 2027
Street Parade is not a gay event, but it fills every bed in the city. Switzerland Tourism lists the 2027 edition for 14 August 2027 round the lake basin. Gay promoters run their own parties that weekend, and the long-running Flash party is the best known, but the 2027 gay line-up was not announced as of November 2026. If your trip overlaps, book months ahead or move your dates. Seefeld and lakeside hotels such as Sorell are right on the route, which is good if you are going and bad if you want to sleep.

Bear weeks, circuit and the rest
Zürich has no established bear week or circuit festival. Männerzone and the Kreis 4 saunas are the regular bear and leather nights. Kweer and Heaven run themed parties most weekends, so check their pages close to your dates.
Getting back at 3 am
Airport to the gay district. Trains from Zürich Flughafen to Hauptbahnhof (HB) take about 10–13 minutes and run several times an hour from early morning until after midnight. A single costs about CHF 7 (about US$9). From HB, Niederdorf is a 7–10 minute walk over the Bahnhofbrücke, or tram to Central, and Kreis 4 is 5–10 minutes on foot. On Friday and Saturday nights the night network covers the gap. A taxi from the airport to the old town is expensive, roughly CHF 60–90 (unverified, confirm before you ride). Uber operates in Zürich and is usually cheaper than street taxis.
Night transport. Regular trams wind down after midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights the ZVV night network runs night S-Bahn trains and buses, marked "N", from about 1 am until morning. An ordinary ticket is valid and there is no night surcharge. From Monday to Thursday after the last tram it is walking, Uber or a taxi. Taxis wait at Central and at the HB side entrances.
Walking safety by street. Niederdorfstrasse, Spitalgasse and the Limmat quays are busy and safe all night. The bridges and the west-bank old town are empty but well lit. Bahnhofstrasse is dead after 10 pm but harmless. Langstrasse at 3 am is the one stretch that needs some street sense. Don't cut through Platzspitz park behind the National Museum on your way home. It has a long history as a cruising ground, and an unlit park is the wrong place to carry an expensive phone at 4 am. From Niederdorf to Plattenhof is a short climb. Walking up to the Dolder at night makes no sense, so take a taxi.

Health, safety and the law
Sexual health, PEP and PrEP. Checkpoint Zürich is the city's queer health centre behind the main station. It offers HIV and STI testing (in-house PCR results for some infections within 24 hours), PrEP, PEP and trans health care. It was long at Konradstrasse 1. Recent listings give a new building at Limmatstrasse 25, three minutes away, so check cpzh.ch for the current address and hours before you go. For a PEP emergency, Checkpoint asks you to walk in during opening hours rather than phone. PEP works best within hours and should start within 48 hours. Outside opening hours, go to the emergency department of the Universitätsspital Zürich, Rämistrasse 100, uphill from Central. Visitors pay for PrEP themselves. Swiss insurance coverage applies only to residents. The Regenbogenhaus community centre at Zollstrasse 117 houses HAZ and around 30 other queer groups.
App dates. Zürich is very safe, but in February 2026 a district court in Bülach, north of the city, tried two men for a robbery series. They had found mostly older gay men on dating platforms, lured them to woodland near Bassersdorf and Wallisellen and robbed them at gunpoint. The rule is simple: meet first in a bar or hotel lobby, and never in woods or car parks on the edge of town. Tell a friend where you are. In a hotel, have guests come to you.
Drugs and chemsex. Drugs are illegal in Switzerland. Adults with up to 10 g of cannabis for personal use are usually not prosecuted for possession, but smoking it in public brings an on-the-spot fine of about CHF 100. Possession of anything harder is a criminal matter. Hotels will charge cleaning fees and call the police over drugs found in rooms. Zürich runs a respected drug-checking service (search "saferparty Zürich") that tests substances anonymously. Use it rather than guess.
Smoking. Smoking is banned in enclosed public spaces, including bars, unless the venue has a separate smoking room. Hotel rooms are almost all non-smoking, with cleaning fees for breaches.
The law. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 1 July 2022, after 64.1% voted yes in a national referendum. Married couples can adopt jointly. Since 2020 the Criminal Code has explicitly prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. No Zürich hotel can lawfully refuse you a double bed.
Three picks

Budget: Motel One Zürich
At Zürich prices, a reliable chain room at chain rates is worth more than character. It sits between both gay pockets, 15–18 minutes from Spitalgasse and 18–21 from Kreis 4, on quiet streets. For the leather end and a lower price, Greulich in Kreis 4 is the alternative.
Mid-range: Hotel Adler
Rosengasse is 1–3 minutes from Heaven, Kweer and the PlatZHirsch building, in a 16th-century house at a fair price for the old town. Ask for a room away from the street and you get the best walk home in the city with a decent night's sleep.

Splurge: Widder Hotel
A five-star hotel 6–8 minutes from the bars is rare in any city. Widder's nine joined townhouses on Rennweg are just across the river from Spitalgasse, and the walk back over the bridge is the prettiest 3 am stroll in Zürich. Choose The Dolder Grand only if you want the spa more than the bars.
Frequently asked

Is there a men-only or gay hotel in Zürich?
There is no men-only or clothing-optional hotel. PlatZHirsch on Spitalgasse 3 is the one hotel long marketed to gay travellers, but its ownership in 2026 is unverified and it takes everyone.
Which hotel is closest to the gay bars?
PlatZHirsch is on Spitalgasse itself. Of the hotels we list, Hotel Adler (1–3 minutes), Alexander Zurich on Niederdorfstrasse (1–2 minutes if the address is confirmed) and Wellenberg (2–4 minutes) are closest to Heaven and Kweer.

Where should I stay for Zurich Pride 2027?
Pride is on 11–12 June 2027, with the Pride Fest on the Kasernenareal in Kreis 4. 25hours Langstrasse is about 6 minutes from the Fest, and the Niederdorf hotels are about 16 minutes away and close to the after-parties. Book by early 2027, because Zurich Art Weekend falls on the same dates.
How much is the hotel tax in Zürich?
Member hotels charge a City Tax of CHF 3.50 per person per night, VAT included. Swiss VAT on accommodation is 3.8% and is usually already in the room price.

Can I bring a guest back to my hotel?
Yes. Zürich hotels do not care about your guest's gender. If he stays the night, the hotel may ask to register him and charge the double rate plus city tax. Book for 2 guests from the start to avoid the question.
Is there a gay beach in Zürich?
The downstream end of Werdinsel, an island in the Limmat on the city's western edge, has long been the nude bathing spot and a gay meeting place in summer. 25hours Zurich West is the nearest of our hotels.

Where do I get PEP in Zürich at the weekend?
Go to Checkpoint Zürich during its opening hours (check cpzh.ch for the current address). Outside those hours, go to the emergency department of the Universitätsspital Zürich on Rämistrasse. PEP should start within 48 hours of the risk.
