Gay Bars and Clubs in London: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: London lost a lot of gay bars between 2010 and 2025, and it's still losing some (Zodiac in Camden closed on 9 October 2026). But it also has more than forty genuinely LGBTQ+ bars, pubs and clubs, and 2026 brought real openings: Coven: HQ in the old G-A-Y Bar, the Black Cap's return in Camden and the community-owned Joiner's Heart in Hackney. The scene is spread out. Soho is for an early drink and bar-hopping, Vauxhall for late clubs, east London for queer nights, and south and south-east London for pubs with drag.

Legal in one line: same-sex relationships are fully legal in the UK, marriage has been equal in England since 2014, and LGBTQ+ people are protected from discrimination by the Equality Act 2010.

Soho: where to start

Old Compton Street and the streets around it are London's gay village: walkable, busy from after work, and quieter after midnight. Time Out, QX and Travel Gay all list the same core:

    • Comptons of Soho: the classic Old Compton Street pub, with a beer-and-bears crowd.
    • The Admiral Duncan: a small pub with cabaret most nights. It survived the 1999 nail-bomb attack that killed three people.
    • Coven: HQ: opened in June 2026 at 30 Old Compton Street, the former G-A-Y Bar, as a five-floor queer café, salon and club.
    • Ku Bar on Lisle Street (with the Ku Klub basement and Ku Lounge in the same building) and Little Ku on Frith Street: the pre-club bars for a younger crowd.
    • The Village, Friendly Society and Freedom, all on Wardour Street: go-go dancers, a Barbie-decorated basement, and a late basement club with drag midweek.
    • The Duke of Wellington on Wardour Street and the Kings Arms on Poland Street: Soho's bear pubs.
    • The Yard (covered courtyard) and Rupert Street: after-work bars on Rupert Street.
    • She Soho: a bar for queer women and non-binary people, Wednesday to Saturday.

    Just south, by Charing Cross: Halfway to Heaven (drag in the basement), Retro Bar (indie and karaoke), and Heaven, the superclub under the Charing Cross arches that hosts the G-A-Y nights. Heaven was given Asset of Community Value status in September 2026 during a rent dispute with its landlord. North of Oxford Street, the City of Quebec near Marble Arch has been a gay pub since 1946.

    Vauxhall: the late clubs

    Vauxhall is club territory. Venues run specific nights rather than being open all week, so check QX or the venue's listings first. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is the historic cabaret pub (Duckie, Bar Wotever, Push the Button). The Eagle runs Horse Meat Disco on Sundays. Fire (with Lightbox next door) hosts the big weekend club nights and fetish parties, and Union is home to SBN/NBN and Bootylicious. Nearby in Kennington, The Cock Tavern is a small gay pub that opens Thursday to Sunday.

    Many of London's best queer nights are parties, not venues: Horse Meat Disco (the Eagle, Sundays), Duckie (RVT), SBN/NBN and Bootylicious (Union), Sink the Pink, Adonis, and the Pop-Up Dyke Bar. They move, so follow them on social media rather than relying on a venue's own page.

    Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • G-A-Y Bar, Old Compton Street: closed October 2025; Coven: HQ opened in the same building in June 2026.
    • G-A-Y Late: closed December 2023. The G-A-Y brand continues as club nights at Heaven.
    • Zodiac Bar, Hampstead Road: closed 9 October 2026, which also left the long-running Wayout Club without a home.
    • Circa Soho: closure announced July 2026.
    • The Glory, Haggerston: closed January 2024; its owners opened The Divine.
    • The Bridge, Clapham (August 2025); Kazbar, Clapham (2016); West Five, Ealing (2024, now a mainstream pub).
    • XXL (2019), The Backstreet (2022), Barcode Vauxhall, Madame Jojo's and the original Joiners Arms (2015).
    • No longer gay: the King William IV in Hampstead and the Prince of Greenwich (both since 2015), and the Vauxhall Griffin, now the Griffin Belle.

    Practical tips

    • Soho fills up from 18:00 on Thursday to Saturday and thins out after midnight. Vauxhall doesn't get going until midnight.
    • Most bars are card-only; carry a card, plus a little cash for club cloakrooms.
    • The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights on the Victoria line (for Vauxhall), the Northern line (for Clapham and Camden) and the Piccadilly, Central and Jubilee lines.
    • Many east and south London venues open only Thursday to Sunday. Check before crossing town.

Where is the gay area in London? Soho, around Old Compton Street, is the main one. Vauxhall is the late-night club area, and Dalston/Hackney is the queer east London scene.

What's open after midnight? Heaven, Ku Klub, Freedom and the Vauxhall clubs (Fire, Union, the Eagle) on club nights.

Are there lesbian bars? Yes: She Soho, La Camionera in Hackney, and the Pop-Up Dyke Bar nights at the Old Nun's Head. Dorothy's, a crowdfunded lesbian pub in Camberwell, had no opening date when we checked.

Is G-A-Y still open? The G-A-Y Bar on Old Compton Street closed in 2025, but G-A-Y nights still run at Heaven.
