Last verified: October 2026. Madrid has one hotel run under an openly gay brand, Axel Hotel Madrid. It is adults-only and "hetero-friendly", it is not men-only, and it sits in Barrio de las Letras rather than Chueca. Beyond Axel there are three small hostales that have sold themselves to gay guests for years: Hostal Room Pride, Hostal La Zona and the Gay Hostal Puerta del Sol (in our listings as Puerta Del Sol Hostel). Whether they are still gay-run in 2026 is unverified, and one recent guide suggests La Zona has changed hands. The city has no men-only or clothing-optional hotel. We found no confirmed closures, and the "Hotel Oscar" that older guides mention is the same building as today's Room Mate Óscar, still trading. Everything else is a mainstream hotel that works for gay guests because of where it is. The useful question in Madrid is how many minutes you are from Calle de Pelayo at 3 am. This guide covers that, along with the booking rules, MadBear in December, Pride 2027 and getting home.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Chueca is a small grid. Gran Vía bounds it to the south, Calle de Fuencarral to the west, Calle del Barquillo to the east and roughly Calle de Fernando VI to the north. Calle de Hortaleza and Calle de Pelayo run through the middle from south to north. The bar density is highest in the 300 m between Calle de las Infantas and Plaza de Chueca, and along Calle de San Bartolomé, Calle de San Marcos and Calle de Gravina. Pelayo has the men's and bear bars. Bears Bar is at no. 4, BEEF CLUB at no. 30, Baranoa at no. 31, and the late Delirio sits at no. 59. Everything in Chueca is within 10 minutes of everything else. The big clubs are outside it: Ohm at Sala Bash on Plaza de Callao, Sala Cool on Isabel la Católica and Strong Center on Calle de Trujillos. All three are 10–15 minutes south-west of Plaza de Chueca. A second, harder scene runs downhill in Lavapiés: Attack on Calle del Olivar, The Ring on Calle del Amparo and Sauna Lavapies on Calle de Zurita.

Madrid is not flat. Lavapiés and Atocha sit well below Sol, so the walk from Axel to Chueca climbs most of the way. Calle de Fuencarral and Hortaleza rise gently going north. Cuesta de Santo Domingo, the street with SaunaBeach, is steep.

Chueca proper: Pelayo, Hortaleza, Plaza de Pedro Zerolo

Room Mate Óscar is on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, the old Plaza de Vázquez de Mella, so older listings carry the old name. It is 2–3 minutes from Plaza de Chueca, and THICK is practically across the street. The rooftop pool and bar are the draw from about May to September. During Pride the square has its own stage, so ask for an inside room or accept that you are part of it. Hostal Chueca at Hortaleza 74 (operated by Roomoo) is the closest budget bed to the plaza, at 2–3 minutes. Lakama and D'Mystic on Gravina are your breakfast. Only YOU at Barquillo 21 is the quieter, eastern side of the grid, also 2–3 minutes from the plaza, with STAR on Luis de Góngora round the corner. Bob W at Fuencarral 45 is a set of self-check-in apartments 4–6 minutes from the plaza. It has no front desk, which suits some guests and annoys others.

At 3 am Chueca is the safest place in central Madrid to be on foot, because it is still full. The cost is noise. Pelayo, San Bartolomé and Infantas run until 05:30–06:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and the bin lorries come after that.

The Gran Vía edge and Calle de Valverde

This strip, between Gran Vía metro and the bottom of Hortaleza, puts you 5–8 minutes from Plaza de Chueca and closer to the clubs at Callao. Petit Palace Chueca at Hortaleza 3 is 2–3 minutes from Muerde O Chupa and 7–8 minutes from the plaza. Room Gran Vía at Gran Vía 6 is a hostel with privates, 5–7 minutes from the plaza. Calle de Valverde is its own small scene. boyberry is at no. 3, YASTA Club (the main MadBear venue) is at no. 10, and the two hotels sit either side of it: Hostal La Zona at no. 7 and 7 Islas at no. 12, both 6–8 minutes from the plaza. That is convenient for MadBear and loud on club nights. The bottom of Valverde around Calle del Desengaño is scruffier after 2 am than Chueca. It isn't dangerous, but keep your phone in your pocket.

Sol, Huertas and Barrio de las Letras

This is where to stay if sightseeing comes first and Chueca is a 12–18 minute walk at night. Puerta Del Sol Hostel is on the fourth floor of Puerta del Sol 14, 11–13 minutes from Plaza de Chueca and next to the night buses. UMusic Hotel at Calle de la Paz 11 is 15–17 minutes from the plaza and 8–9 minutes downhill to Attack. Hotel Francisco I on Calle del Arenal is 16–18 minutes from Chueca but only 2–3 minutes from Strong Center, which matters if you are here for Sleazy Madrid. Axel is at Calle de Atocha 49, between Antón Martín and Tirso de Molina. That is 4–5 minutes to Attack, about 4 minutes to Sauna Lavapies and 18–22 minutes to Plaza de Chueca, uphill most of the way. Sol itself never empties and is well policed. On the walk from Sol to Chueca, use Calle de la Montera or Calle de Alcalá to Gran Vía, then Hortaleza or Fuencarral. Montera has pickpockets and street hustlers at night, so walk it briskly. Lower Lavapiés is fine for the walk between Axel and the bars, but phone snatching happens there, as it does anywhere tourists stand still.

Malasaña, Conde Duque and the sauna side

West of Fuencarral, Malasaña is younger and mixed, and most of the saunas are here. Akeah Hotel Gran Via at San Bernardo 48 is about 2 minutes from Sauna Paraíso and 14–15 minutes from Plaza de Chueca. Hostal Pizarro is close to Sauna Principe and 11–12 minutes from the plaza. Safestay on Calle de Sagasta is 3–4 minutes from Sauna Octopus and 9–11 minutes from Plaza de Chueca. Its 3.8 rating is the lowest of the central options, so read recent reviews.

Recoletos and the Prado

The Mandarin Oriental Ritz is 14–15 minutes from the plaza, mostly through quiet, well-lit streets. AC Hotel Recoletos is 11–12 minutes away and Apart-hotel Serrano Recoletos 9–11 minutes, though the apart-hotel's 3.6 rating is worth noting. This part of town is calm at night and dead after midnight, so the walk is pleasant but you won't stumble into anything on the way.

Further out

The AC hotels at Los Vascos (Chamberí), Aitana (Castellana 152, near the Bernabéu) and Madrid Feria (near IFEMA) are business hotels. From any of them, Chueca is a taxi or a metro ride that stops around 01:30. Book them for a trade fair, not a weekend out.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Axel Hotel Madrid. This is the only Madrid hotel under an explicitly gay brand. It was trading normally through 2026, with guest reviews and management replies from June to August 2026. The Barcelona-founded group calls the hotel 4-star and "heterofriendly" and says it is in Barrio de las Letras, not Chueca, whatever some booking sites claim. Booking channels list it as "Adults Only". Some aggregator sites call it "men-only" or "gay-owned". It is not men-only: women and straight couples stay. Who owns it in 2026 is a corporate question we could not verify, so treat "gay-owned" as unconfirmed. The rooftop Sky Bar with its small pool draws a mostly gay crowd of guests and locals in the warm months, and non-guests can come up for the bar. Pool access for non-guests and any day-pass policy are unverified, so ask at the desk. Recent rates on booking sites have run to about US$300 a night on autumn dates, and more at Pride.

Hostal Room Pride is at San Bartolomé 2, with reception on the first floor. The name says it all, and the building is 11 m from Bears Bar. It has single and double rooms plus suites for up to 6, which is handy for groups at Pride. Booking sites quote check-in from 14:00 to 00:00, so arrange a late arrival in advance. Rates have been quoted from about €90. The owners' orientation is unverified.

Hostal La Zona at Valverde 7 has been "the classic gay hostal" in reviews for twenty years. Most rooms have small street balconies. A 2026 guide says it was formerly gay-owned and has likely changed management. Treat it as gay-friendly with a gay history, and confirm before booking if gay management matters to you.

Gay Hostal Puerta del Sol is on the fourth floor of Puerta del Sol 14. Booking channels still list it under that name and describe it as adults-only. The listings don't make clear whether it is gay-run in 2026, so treat that as unverified.

Men-only and clothing-optional: none in Madrid, and nothing like Maspalomas or Sitges exists here. Gay guests in Madrid stay in mainstream hotels in or next to Chueca. At Pride, as one long-running gay travel site puts it, every hotel in the neighbourhood effectively becomes a gay hotel. Gay-friendly hotels we don't list that regularly appear in gay guides include H10 Villa de la Reina on Gran Vía, Generator Madrid (a hostel) and JC Rooms Santa Ana. None of them is a gay hotel.

Closed or merged: we found nothing that closed in 2025–2026. "Hotel Oscar" is Room Mate Óscar under an old name, and it's still open.

Booking rules that bite

    • Every overnight guest is registered. Since December 2024, Spanish law (Real Decreto 933/2021) has required hotels and hostales to record a full set of details for every guest: ID document, address, phone and payment method. Expect the desk to scan every passport. Someone who stays the night without being registered is a breach for the hotel, not just a house rule.
    • Visitors. Madrid has no standard joiner fee, and we found no hotel in our listings that publishes one. Large hotels rarely question a daytime visitor who walks through with a guest. Small hostales with a first-floor reception and a buzzer are stricter, and some don't allow non-registered guests in rooms at all. The simple fix is to book for 2 guests when you book online, even if you are travelling alone and hoping. A double for two usually costs the same or barely more, and nobody asks questions later.
    • Hotel tax: none. Madrid city has no tourist tax. The city council rejected a proposal for one on 21 July 2026. Room prices include Spain's 10% VAT (IVA) on accommodation, so the price you see should be the price you pay.
    • No resort fees are customary in Madrid. Rooftop hotels sometimes charge for pool towels or loungers in summer, so ask.
    • Deposits and minimum stays. Pre-authorisations on your card are normal at Axel, the Ritz and the chains. Expect 2- to 3-night minimums and non-refundable-only rates in Chueca over the Pride weekend and the December bridge. Booking channels showing "fully refundable" rates months ahead disappear first.
    • Self-check-in apartments such as Bob W require ID upload before arrival because of the same registration law. Do it early.
    • Reception hours. Hostales often don't staff the desk overnight. Get the door code and the late check-in instructions in writing.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

MadBear: 3–10 December 2026

The organisers have confirmed 3 to 10 December 2026, timed for the Constitution Day (6 December) and Immaculate Conception (8 December) holidays. The 2026 programme runs pack collection and a nightly bar route through Bears Bar, El 12, THICK, Hot and Mad Daddy Club. Afternoon sessions are at Sauna Octopus on Calle de Churruca 10. Most night parties are at YASTA Club, Calle de Valverde 10, and there is a Macho Party at Changó on Calle de Covarrubias 42. Book on San Bartolomé (Room Pride), Valverde (La Zona or 7 Islas), Pelayo or Hortaleza. This is a Spanish long weekend with the Christmas lights on, so central rooms are scarce and expensive. With five weeks to go, take whatever is in the grid and don't wait for deals. MadBear 2027 is expected in early December 2027, dates to be confirmed.

Sleazy Madrid: 14–18 April 2027

The organisers give 14–18 April 2027 for this fetish and electronic-music festival. Tickets have been sold through Strong Center's site, so Francisco I (2–3 min from Strong) or anything around Sol and Callao makes sense. A December winter edition has run in past years, but no 2026 dates had been published as of October 2026.

Madrid Leather Weekend

Leathermen Club of Spain hosts it along with the Mr Leather Spain contest. Third-party leather calendars put the 2026 edition on the last weekend of October, which is this weekend, but we could not confirm that with the club. The 2027 edition had not been announced as of October 2026.

Madrid Pride (MADO): around 30 June–4 July 2027, dates provisional

MADO 2026 ran from 25 June to 5 July. For 2027 the city's tourism office lists the opening pregón on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo on 30 June, with stages at Pedro Zerolo, Plaza del Rey, Puerta del Sol and Plaza de España from 30 June or 1 July to 4 July. The state march is listed for Saturday 3 July 2027. All of these are marked "to be confirmed". The march traditionally goes from Atocha to Plaza de Colón along Paseo del Prado and Recoletos, which puts the Ritz, AC Recoletos and Axel near the route. Chueca hotels are inside the party, and sleep is optional until about 4 am. Hotels near Sol and the Ritz are calmer at night and still walkable. Chueca rooms for Pride week go many months ahead. If you know you are coming, book refundable in the winter and cancel later if you have to.

Other dates

WE Party has historically run New Year events in Madrid, but we couldn't verify 2026–27 dates, so check with the promoter. The Spanish Grand Prix moved to the new Madring circuit by IFEMA in 2026. We haven't verified the 2027 date, but hotels across the city fill and prices rise that weekend, so check the calendar before you book a mid-year trip.

Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. The Línea Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs 24 hours. By day it ends at Atocha, but late at night it terminates at Cibeles, which is 10–12 minutes on foot from Chueca. The fare is about €5. Metro Line 8 from the terminals charges an airport supplement (about €3) on top of the normal ticket, and the trip to Chueca means a change at Nuevos Ministerios. Taxis from Barajas to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road pay a fixed fare, set at about €33 (around US$36). Check the sticker in the cab in case it has gone up. Allow 25–40 minutes by taxi depending on traffic, and 45–60 minutes by metro.

At night. The metro stops around 01:30 and restarts about 06:00. Chueca (Line 5), Gran Vía (Lines 1 and 5) and Tribunal (Lines 1 and 10) are the stations for the bars. After that, the búho night buses fan out from Cibeles and Sol. Taxis are plentiful on Gran Vía, Calle de Alcalá and Calle de Fuencarral even at 5 am. A green light on the roof means it's free. Cabify, Uber and FreeNow all operate in Madrid, and a cross-centre ride is cheap by northern European standards.

Walking. Inside Chueca, walking is fine at any hour. The walks to watch are Montera at night (pickpockets) and the empty stretch of Recoletos after 2 am (dull rather than dangerous). Going down to Lavapiés, keep to Calle de Atocha or Magdalena rather than the dark side streets. From Axel to Chueca at 3 am, get a cab. It costs little, and the walk is uphill.

Health, safety and the law

Legal position. Spain has had same-sex marriage and joint adoption since 2005, broad anti-discrimination law covering services (hotels included), and gender self-determination since 2023. If a hotel treats two men asking for a double bed as a problem, it is breaking the law. In practice, in Madrid, it doesn't happen.

Sexual health. The public sexual-health clinic is the Centro Sanitario Sandoval at Calle de Sandoval 7, near Bilbao and San Bernardo metros. It does STI testing and is part of the PrEP programme. Check the Comunidad de Madrid website for walk-in hours. Visitors should bring their own PrEP, because prescriptions here go through the Spanish health system. For PEP after a risk, go to the emergency department (urgencias) of any public hospital within 72 hours. You may be charged if you are not covered by EU health rights, so carry travel insurance details. COGAM near Gran Vía can point you to community rapid-testing and chemsex-support services.

App dates. The realistic risk for gay visitors in Madrid is robbery through dating apps, not homophobic violence. Spanish police have broken up several gangs in recent years that targeted men they met online. We found no specific dated incident against visitors in 2025–2026 to report. The rule: meet in a bar first, don't let anyone you have just met see your PIN or unlocked phone, and keep your passport in the room safe. Because every guest has to be registered, bringing a stranger back to a hostal also brings a stranger past reception. Your hotel has your ID and should have theirs.

Drugs. Possessing or using drugs in public, including in bars, is an administrative offence under the 2015 public-safety law, with fines starting at about €600. Selling or sharing is a crime. Hotels will charge cleaning and damage fees and may evict guests over chemsex parties in rooms. Cannabis is tolerated only in private. Smoking it in the street is fined, and the cannabis clubs are members-only associations, not coffee shops.

Smoking. Indoor smoking is banned in bars, clubs and hotel common areas, and almost all hotel rooms are non-smoking with cleaning fees if you do. A government plan to extend the ban to bar terraces was going through parliament. We couldn't verify its status as of October 2026, so follow the signs.

Venues. We found no reports of police raids on Madrid gay venues in 2025–2026. Pickpocketing at Sol, on Gran Vía and on the metro is the most common crime visitors report.

Three picks

Budget: Hostal Room Pride. It is the only bed in Madrid where you walk out of the front door into the MadBear bar route. Private rooms, suites for groups, and Plaza de Chueca 2–3 minutes away. Sort out late arrival before you fly, and bring earplugs.

Mid-range: Room Mate Óscar. It sits on Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, the square named after the activist behind Spain's marriage law. The rooftop pool works from late spring to September, and there are a dozen bars within 3 minutes. It has 3,500 reviews averaging 4.5, which in Chueca counts for a lot.

Splurge: Axel Hotel Madrid, or the Mandarin Oriental Ritz if you'd rather be quiet. Axel gives you a gay crowd at the pool, Lavapiés' fetish bars 5 minutes downhill, and a cab ride to Chueca. The Ritz gives you the Prado, a 4.7 rating from 4,400 reviews, a 14-minute walk to the plaza, and the Pride march past the door.
