About this place Rebar Chelsea

Rebar at 127 8th Avenue is a Chelsea institution of the neighbourhood-bar variety — a venue that has earned its place on the 8th Avenue gay strip through consistency, reasonable prices, and the absence of the attitude that can characterise bars with more elaborate self-presentation. Chelsea's 8th Avenue was the epicentre of Manhattan's gay bar scene in the 1990s and early 2000s; while the neighbourhood's dominance has shifted somewhat toward Hell's Kitchen, the 8th Avenue strip retains a cluster of gay bars that continue to serve the Chelsea community and its visitors. Rebar functions as the social glue on that strip — a bar where groups meet before moving on, where bar crawls pause for a drink, and where locals who have been coming for years maintain their routine. The crowd is mixed in the way that 8th Avenue bars tend to be: from residents in their 30s and 40s to younger visitors discovering the neighbourhood. There is no cover charge and no dress code, which makes it an accessible starting point for any Chelsea evening.

Went on a Thursday night and had a great time. The live music was fantastic and brought a lot of energy. Drinks were affordable, and the overall vibe made it a great place to hang out with friends. That said, the preset tipping options at checkout start at 20 percent, even when just ordering simple mixed drinks at the bar. I get that you can technically adjust the tip manually or decline it altogether, but it puts you in a weird social spot when you’re buying rounds and there’s no easy way to tip a flat amount per drink. These were not handcrafted cocktails with a lot of effort. They were quick two-ingredient mixed drinks served fast on a crowded night. In that context, tipping a dollar or two per drink seems reasonable. Making the tip percentage-based instead of letting people tip per drink feels like an awkward mismatch. Great spot overall, but the tipping system could use some flexibility.
