Last verified: October 2026. San Francisco has no men-only hotel and no clothing-optional one, and it has gone years without either. What it does have is a short list of small Castro stays: Parker Guest House on Church Street, the 12-room Hotel Castro on 18th Street and Beck's Motor Lodge on Market. Beyond those are hundreds of mainstream downtown hotels where two men checking in raise no eyebrows at all. The gay guesthouse era has thinned. The Willows Inn on 14th Street is closed, and Hotel Diva on Geary is now city-owned housing. Yelp flags Inn on Castro, the B&B at Castro and Market, as closed in 2026, but we could not confirm that either way. This guide measures walking distance to two places, Castro and 18th and the SoMa leather bars around Folsom between 9th and 12th. It also covers the rules, taxes and big weekends that shape a booking in 2026 and 2027.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Castro and 18th | Walk to the SoMa leather bars (Folsom, 9th to 12th) | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Castro guesthouses | Parker Guest House; Inn on Castro (confirm it is open) | 8–10 min; 1–2 min | 32–35 min; 40–45 min | Couples and repeat visitors who want breakfast and a host. With so few rooms, they sell out early for Pride and Frameline. |
| On the strip, hotel-style | The Hotel Castro; Beck's Motor Lodge | 3–5 min; 5–7 min | 43–47 min; 36–40 min | Anyone who wants to stumble home from Toad Hall. The Hotel Castro has no front desk. Beck's is a motel with parking. |
| Leather and Folsom base | SoMa House; San Francisco Proper Hotel | 45–48 min (take Muni) | 7–9 min; 10–12 min | Folsom Street Fair and Up Your Alley weekends. The walk takes you through Mid-Market and along 6th and 7th Streets, which you will not enjoy at 2 am. |
| Tenderloin edge, budget and character | Phoenix Hotel; Warfield Hotel; FOUND Hotel; HI Downtown Hostel | 44–57 min (take Muni) | 15–22 min | Close to Eros and Aunt Charlie's on Turk Street. After dark these are the worst streets in the city. |
| Union Square, Nob Hill and luxury | Taj Campton Place; Fairmont San Francisco; Hotel Abri; Executive Hotel Vintage Court | 55–65 min (take Muni) | 20–32 min | First-timers who want cable cars and shopping. The Castro is a 15–20 min Metro ride from Powell, not a walk. |
| Quiet residential | Noe's Nest; Payne Mansion Hotel; Hotel Drisco | 27–30 min, hilly; others by car | 45 min or more | People who go to bed before the bars do. Noe's Nest is the only one where walking home from the Castro is realistic. |
| Airport and out of town | DoubleTree SF Airport North; Hotel Focus SFO | Not walkable: 20–40 min by car | Not walkable | Early flights only. Every night out costs a rideshare there and back. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
San Francisco's gay life sits in two pockets that are a long walk apart. The Castro runs along Castro Street from Market down to 19th. Most of the bars are packed onto the 400 block of Castro and the 4000 block of 18th Street, with more along Market between Church and Castro: The Lookout at 16th and Market, Hi Tops, Beaux and The Cafe. SoMa is the leather and dance end. Powerhouse and Hole in the Wall are on Folsom near 9th, the SF Eagle is at 12th and Harrison, and Lone Star Saloon is on Harrison. The Stud is at 1123 Folsom, Oasis is on 11th Street and The EndUp is at 6th and Harrison. From Castro and 18th to Powerhouse is about 2.5 km, which comes to 40–45 min on foot through Duboce Triangle and across the Market and Van Ness junction. Nobody does that walk at 2 am. Pick one pocket as home and treat the other as a 10-minute ride.
California bars stop serving at 2 am, so the streets fill between 1:45 and 2:15. The Castro stays busy and well lit until then, and Market between Church and Castro is fine. The places visitors get hassled are Market Street east of Van Ness (Mid-Market), Turk, Eddy, Jones and Taylor in the Tenderloin, and 6th Street in SoMa. Do not walk those alone after midnight.

The Castro core: Castro Street and 18th Street
The Hotel Castro at 4230 18th Street is the closest working hotel to the main corner. Our listings put it 39 m from Theatre Rhinoceros and 3–5 min from Castro and 18th, and The Edge, Toad Hall, The Mix and Moby Dick are all within that distance. It has 12 rooms and is now run by Kasa. That means self check-in, no front desk, and staff you reach by phone or text. Rooms face 18th Street, which stays loud until about 2:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. Walk a minute west of Castro and the street is flat and residential.
Inn on Castro at 321 Castro Street, just south of Market, would be the best-placed bed in the city. It is 28 m from The Midnight Sun and 1–2 min from Twin Peaks Tavern. For decades it was a gay-run Victorian B&B. In 2026 Yelp marks it as closed. We could not confirm whether it still takes guests, so phone before you pay anything.
Upper Market, Church Street and Duboce Triangle
Beck's Motor Lodge at 2222 Market sits between Noe and Sanchez. Beaux is 179 m away (2–3 min), The Lookout and Hi Tops are about 5 min, and Castro and 18th is 5–7 min on mostly flat ground. 2026 reviews describe a full makeover and free parking, which is rare in this city. Traffic on Market Street never stops, so ask for a room off the street. A September 2026 weeknight was showing at about US$200.
Parker Guest House at 520 Church Street, between 17th and 18th, is two Edwardian houses with a garden. Its current Tripadvisor listing gives 19 rooms, and 2026 reviews are consistently good. The Lookout is 317 m away (5 min). Castro and 18th is 8–10 min along 18th Street, with a short climb. Dolores Park is across the street and the J-Church streetcar stops at the corner. At 3 am Church Street is quiet and residential, which is what you want. The Pilsner Inn at 225 Church is 7–9 min north.

The Mission and Noe Valley edge
Noe's Nest at 1257 Guerrero is a Victorian B&B near 24th Street. El Rio, the queer bar on Mission Street, is 561 m away (9–10 min). The Castro is 27–30 min on foot over Dolores Heights. The hills are steep enough that after midnight a short rideshare is the sensible choice. Mother and Jolene's on 16th Street are a ride or a long walk. It suits a slow week, not a bar crawl.
Civic Center, Hayes Valley and Mid-Market
San Francisco Proper at 45 McAllister is the design hotel of this zone. It has a rooftop bar, Civic Center BART and Muni a block away, and Aunt Charlie's Lounge 254 m off (3–5 min). Powerhouse is 10–12 min on foot. The route crosses Market and runs down 7th or 8th Street, though, so a 5-minute rideshare is better at night. Inn at the Opera at 333 Fulton is now marketed as a Wyndham vacation resort rather than an independent inn. Martuni's piano bar is 15 min away and the Castro about 35 min, so take Muni from Van Ness station.

The Tenderloin edge
The Warfield Hotel at 118 Taylor is 75 m from Eros, the men-only sex club at 132 Turk, which sits across the street from Aunt Charlie's. Its rating of 3.1 from about 880 reviews tells you what to expect. Phoenix Hotel at Eddy and Larkin is the one with character, a 1950s motor lodge built around a heated pool. Power Exchange is 8 min away and The Cinch on Polk is 19–21 min. FOUND on Mason and the HI Downtown Hostel at 312 Mason are cheaper beds closer to Union Square. All four are fine for sleeping and poor for walking home after midnight, so take a car to the door.
Union Square, Nob Hill and the Financial District
This is where the big mainstream hotels are. Hotel Abri, Hotel G, Warwick, Inn at Union Square, Mystic Hotel, Executive Hotel Vintage Court and Hotel Triton are all 400 m to 1 km from Eros and 55–65 min on foot from the Castro. From Powell Street station the Muni Metro gets you to Castro in about 15–20 min. The Fairmont on Nob Hill is the closest grand hotel to The Cinch: 978 m, or 16 min, steeply downhill and then flat along Polk. The Omni, the Hyatt Regency and Hotel Zephyr at Fisherman's Wharf are 4–5 km from Castro and 18th. They are bases for sightseeing, not for gay nightlife.

Pacific Heights and Japantown
Hotel Drisco on Pacific Avenue is rated 4.9 from more than 650 reviews and is the quietest good hotel on this list. The Cinch is 31–32 min away on foot and everything else needs a ride. Hotel Kabuki in Japantown is 18–19 min from The Cinch and about 10 min by car to Castro and Market. Payne Mansion has 10 rooms on Sutter and is 12–13 min from The Cinch, the last of the old Polk Gulch gay bars.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
As of October 2026 we found no men-only hotel in San Francisco, no clothing-optional hotel and no hotel that admits only gay guests. Every place in this guide takes everyone. Gay travellers here stay in mainstream hotels or in a few small Castro places that have historically marketed themselves to gay men.
- Parker Guest House long called itself the city's premier gay guest house. Today it is open to everyone, and reviews from September and October 2026 are strong. We could not verify who owns it now, so we do not label it gay-owned. On most weekends the guests are still mainly gay couples.
- Inn on Castro ran for years as a gay-run B&B at Castro and Market. Yelp marks it as closed in 2026. That is unconfirmed, so phone first.
- The Hotel Castro is a mainstream boutique hotel on 18th Street run by Kasa. Its location is gay; as far as we can tell its ownership is not.
- Willows Inn, the European-style B&B at 710 14th Street near Church and Market, is closed. Yelp and GayCities both report the closure; the year is unverified.
- Hotel Diva at 440 Geary was a popular gay-friendly hotel in the theatre district. The city bought it with a state grant in 2020, and it now houses residents rather than tourists.
- Twin Peaks Hotel on Market Street near Church is a budget hotel not in our listings. It is heavily booked by gay travellers on misterb&b in 2026. It is a mainstream hotel, so expect basic rooms and check whether your bathroom is shared before you book.
No hotel here sells day passes to a gay pool scene. If that is what you want, the regional answer is the gay resorts of the Russian River around Guerneville, roughly 2 hours north by car. Check each resort's 2026 status before you go.

Booking rules that bite
Hotel tax. San Francisco charges a 14% Transient Occupancy Tax on stays under 30 days. On top of that comes a Tourism Improvement District assessment of 2.25% in the central zone or 2% elsewhere, and larger hotels may add a Moscone Expansion District charge. Budget roughly 16–17.5% over the room rate, and check the line items on your bill.
Resort and "urban" fees. Several downtown hotels charge a nightly destination fee. Since July 2024, California law has required advertised prices to include mandatory fees (taxes excepted), so compare total prices rather than headline rates. Small Castro places generally do not charge these fees, but confirm before booking.
Visitors and ID. American hotels do not charge joiner fees the way many Asian hotels do, and nobody asks your guest for a passport at the lift. The person who booked needs photo ID and a credit card in their name at check-in, and the hotel will hold a deposit for incidentals. Guesthouses are different. Front doors are shared and owners often live on site, so some B&Bs ask that unregistered guests not stay the night. The Hotel Castro has no front desk, so you check in through Kasa's system. One tip works everywhere: book for 2 guests from the start, even if you are travelling alone. The second name is then on the booking and the question of a second keycard never comes up.
Minimum stays and cancellation. Expect 2- or 3-night minimums at small inns over Pride, Folsom and holiday weekends. Non-refundable rates hurt if your plans change. Parking costs extra almost everywhere except Beck's, and valet parking downtown is expensive.
The gay calendar and where to book for it

Frameline: 16–26 June 2027
The LGBTQ+ film festival runs for 11 days, is based at the Castro Theatre and ends on Pride weekend. The 2026 edition ran 17–27 June. Book in the Castro (Parker, Hotel Castro or Beck's) if you want to walk to screenings. Rooms for the festival's second weekend sell out along with Pride.
San Francisco Pride: 26–27 June 2027
On the Sunday the parade runs down Market Street from the Embarcadero to Civic Center, and the main celebration is around Civic Center. On Saturday and Sunday nights the parties spill over into the Castro. We could not verify any official partner hotels. For the parade, Civic Center and Union Square hotels are best because the route is a short walk away. For the nights, stay in the Castro. Book Castro rooms for Pride by early spring. Three small properties share all that demand, so waiting until May is a gamble. Downtown prices also rise sharply that weekend.

Up Your Alley (Dore Alley): 25 July 2027
This is the smaller, rougher leather fair, held on Dore Street between Howard and Folsom and run by Folsom Street Events. The 2026 fair was on 26 July. SoMa House and Proper are the picks within walking distance. Rooms are easier to get than on Folsom weekend.
Folsom Street Fair: 26 September 2027
The world's biggest leather fair fills Folsom Street between 8th and 13th, and the bars around it run parties all weekend. The 2026 fair was on 27 September. From SoMa, Civic Center or the Tenderloin edge you can walk to the gates in 10–20 min. From the Castro it is a quick Muni or rideshare. Hotels in SoMa and Mid-Market near the fair fill four to six months ahead.

Gay Softball World Series, 50th edition: 2027, dates TBA
The series returns to the Bay Area 50 years after San Francisco hosted the first one in 1977. Dates and fields were TBA as of October 2026. If games are spread around the Bay, a downtown base near BART makes more sense than the Castro.
National Queer Arts Festival: 2027 TBA
This is a season of separately ticketed shows rather than one big weekend. The 2026 edition ran from 16 May to 30 June. It does not push up hotel prices on its own.
You will also hear about other events. The Castro Street Fair is traditionally held in early October. The Bears of San Francisco and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence produce the Bearrison Street Fair in SoMa, and the Bears of San Francisco also run the International Bear Rendezvous in winter. We could not confirm 2027 dates for any of these with the organisers, so treat them as unannounced.

Getting back at 3 am
From SFO. BART runs from the airport to downtown in about 30 min. For SoMa and the Tenderloin edge, get off at Civic Center. For the Castro, change at Civic Center or Powell to the Muni Metro and ride to Castro station. The BART fare is about US$10–12 and the last trains leave around midnight, so check the timetable if you land late. A rideshare or taxi to the Castro takes 25–40 min depending on traffic. Check the fare in the app, because airport surcharges and surge pricing change it a lot.
Night transport. The Muni Metro under Market Street shuts overnight, and Owl buses run along the same route with long gaps between them. After 1 am, plan on a rideshare. Uber and Lyft work everywhere in the city. Waymo driverless cars also run in San Francisco, which suits anyone who would rather not chat with a driver at 2 am. From Castro and 18th to Powerhouse is about 10 min by car.
Walking. Walking home at 2 am is normal anywhere in the Castro, from Church Street to Diamond and from Duboce down to 19th, and there are people about. Upper Market as far as Church is fine. Do not walk from the Castro to SoMa at night. Do not walk home through the Tenderloin (Turk, Eddy, Jones, Taylor, Leavenworth) or along 6th Street; get dropped at the hotel door. The SoMa streets between the bars are dark and quiet, so order your car while you are still inside.
Health, safety and the law
PrEP, PEP and testing. Strut, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation's centre at 470 Castro Street, offers free or low-cost HIV and STI testing plus PrEP and PEP for gay, bi and trans men. Check walk-in hours before you go. San Francisco City Clinic at 356 7th Street in SoMa is the city's sexual health clinic. For PEP out of hours, go to the emergency department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, 1001 Potrero Avenue. PEP works best the sooner you start, and it has to be started within 72 hours. The SF LGBT Center at 1800 Market can point you to other services.
App dates. In 2024 a Bay Area man was convicted of robbing a man he met on Grindr at gunpoint in a motel. The usual rules apply. Meet in a bar first, tell a friend your hotel and room number, and never hand over your phone passcode. A staffed front desk puts people off; The Hotel Castro's self check-in does not.
Street crime. SFPD figures for the first quarter of 2026 show reported crime down 28% on a year earlier and robbery down 33%. Car break-ins are how tourists most often lose things. Leave nothing visible in a parked car, including at Beck's.
Drugs. Possessing meth, GHB and other hard drugs is a crime in California. Proposition 36, passed in November 2024, increased penalties for some drug offences. Street drugs here are often contaminated with fentanyl. Pharmacies sell naloxone (Narcan) without a prescription. Hotels treat drug use as grounds for eviction and charge for cleaning.
Cannabis and smoking. Adults 21 and over can buy cannabis legally from licensed shops, but you cannot use it in public or in hotel rooms. Almost every hotel in the city is non-smoking, vaping included, and charges a cleaning fee if you break the rule.
Nudity and cruising. San Francisco banned public nudity in 2013, except at permitted events such as Folsom and Pride. Baker Beach North and Marshall's Beach are on federal parkland, where going clothing-optional has long been the custom. Most city parks close from midnight to 5 am, including Buena Vista and Corona Heights. Lewd conduct in public is still an offence.

Three picks
Budget: Beck's Motor Lodge. A renovated motel 5–7 min from Castro and 18th, with free parking, at about US$200 on an ordinary weeknight. It is the cheapest bed you can walk home to from every Castro bar. For something cheaper still, the HI Downtown Hostel has dorm beds, with a Metro ride to the Castro.
Mid-range: Parker Guest House. A garden, breakfast, Dolores Park across the street, The Lookout 5 min away and a quiet residential block to come home to. Pick it if you want sleep as well as bars. Confirm the current rate and minimum stay.
Splurge: San Francisco Proper. Kelly Wearstler rooms in a 1904 flatiron building, a rooftop bar, a 5-minute ride to the Folsom leather bars and a single Metro line to Castro station. It is the right base for Folsom or Up Your Alley weekends. Get a car home rather than walking through Mid-Market.
Frequently asked

Is there a men-only gay hotel in San Francisco?
No. As of October 2026 we found no men-only or clothing-optional hotel in the city. The closest things to gay guesthouses are Parker Guest House and the small hotels in the Castro, and all of them are open to everyone.
Which hotel is closest to the Castro bars?
The Hotel Castro on 18th Street, 3–5 min from Castro and 18th. Inn on Castro would be even closer, but it is listed as closed in 2026 and we could not confirm that it is open.

Is Inn on Castro still open?
Unconfirmed. Yelp marks it as closed in 2026. Phone the inn before paying a deposit, and keep Beck's or The Hotel Castro as a back-up.
How much is the hotel tax in San Francisco?
A 14% Transient Occupancy Tax plus a 2–2.25% Tourism Improvement District assessment, and at some larger hotels a Moscone district charge as well. Plan for roughly 16–17.5% on top of the room rate.

Can I bring a guest back to my hotel?
Yes at mainstream hotels, and there is no fee. Small B&Bs may not allow unregistered guests to stay the night, so book for 2 people from the start.
Where should I stay for the Folsom Street Fair?
SoMa or Civic Center. SoMa House and San Francisco Proper are 7–12 min from the leather bars on Folsom. The 2027 fair is on 26 September, so book four to six months ahead.

Is there a gay beach in San Francisco?
Yes. The north end of Baker Beach and Marshall's Beach, below the Golden Gate Bridge, are clothing-optional and have had a gay crowd for decades. Both are a car ride from every hotel in this guide, and the water is cold all year.
