Gay Braunschweig: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Braunschweig has no gay bar, no gay club and no gay sauna, and the city council says so itself. What it does have is Onkel Emma, a queer centre with a Friday pub night, a queer party series that has been running since 1989, and one of the bigger CSDs in northern Germany every August. If you plan around those three, a visit works. If you arrive on a random Tuesday expecting a bar strip, it won't.

Legal in one line: Germany has had marriage equality since 2017, anti-discrimination protection in employment and services, and the Self-Determination Act (in force since November 2024) lets people change their legal gender by declaration at the registry office.

Braunschweig is a city of about 255,000 in Lower Saxony, roughly 45 minutes east of Hannover by ICE and about an hour and a half from Berlin. It's a university town, home to the TU Braunschweig, and the student population shapes a lot of what queer life there is.

Where the scene actually is

There is no gay neighbourhood. Older guides, including an earlier version of this page, described the Altstadt around Martinsplatz and Schlossplatz as a "gay district"; no current source supports that. The Martinikirche square was where the first Sommerlochfestival rallies were held in the 1990s, and the Schlossplatz is where the CSD rally ends today, which is probably where that idea came from. Day to day, queer Braunschweig meets at a handful of addresses spread across the centre.

Onkel Emma: the queer centre

Onkel Emma at Echternstraße 9, on the west side of the old town, is the one place to know. The local association VSE e.V. (Verein für sexuelle Emanzipation, founded 1989) has run it since 2011, and it's the nearest thing the city has to a gay bar. Every Friday evening there's a queer pub night (queerer Kneipenabend) that's open to everyone, including visitors who don't know anyone.

During the week the rooms are used by groups and for counselling. Groups listed over the years include JOE, the youth group for people up to 27; Trans*Lions, a trans self-help group; a lesbian group; and a queer refugees group. VSE also lists smaller meetups, such as a fetish get-together for men and a pup-play group, through the city's LGBTIQ directory. Programmes change, so check onkel-emma.org or pick up the printed monthly programme on site.

Parties: MenDance/WomenDance

MenDance/WomenDance, "die queere Party", is the city's main queer night out. VSE volunteers have run it since 1989, which makes it one of the longest-running queer party series in Germany. Since 2022 it has been held at Stereowerk, a mainstream club at Böcklerstraße 30. The city's LGBTIQ directory says it runs about five times a year, from 22:00 into the early morning, and it's open to queer people and allies. Dates go up on facebook.com/mendance and vsebs.de.

On other nights there is no regular gay programme in Braunschweig's clubs. We found no recurring drag night in the city.

CSD Braunschweig (Sommerlochfestival)

CSD Braunschweig is the big date of the year. It started on 10 August 1996 as the Sommerlochfestival and has used the CSD name since 2000. VSE organises it, and the festival runs as a two-week programme of talks, culture and parties that ends with a demonstration and a street festival on the Schlossplatz.

In 2026 the festival ran from 24 July to 8 August. The demonstration on 8 August started at 13:00 at the Kleines Haus (Herzogin-Anna-Amalia-Platz) and ended at the Schlossplatz. The organisers reported more than 6,000 participants, a record for them; we found no independent press figure. The closing Pride Night party is held at Schön & Frölich. CSD Braunschweig 2027 is announced for 13–14 August 2027 on csd-braunschweig.de.

The organisers' own history notes a queer-hostile attack near the CSD in 2023. It's not a reason to stay away, but walk back in groups late at night, as you would after any big Pride.

Health and support

Braunschweiger AIDS-Hilfe at Eulenstraße 5 offers HIV and STI counselling and testing. Its gay and queer prevention project is called sven, and it runs a monthly Regenbogenfrühstück (rainbow breakfast), which is a relaxed way to meet people. The city also has an LGBTIQ coordination office (Koordinationsstelle LSBTIQ) at Schuhstraße 24, which publishes the city's queer directory on braunschweig.de.

At the TU Braunschweig there's a student network, LGBTIQ@TU, and the university ran a "queer@TU" focus year in 2023. The Filmfest Braunschweig has a section of new LGBTQI films called Que*rama.

Saunas and cruising

There's no gay sauna in Braunschweig, and we found no record of a gay sex bar or cruising club either. The public saunas, such as the Wasserwelten, are mainstream. We don't list any outdoor cruising area for the city, because no two recent sources agree on one. Dating apps are how most men meet here. For a bigger scene with bars and saunas, Hannover is about 45 minutes away by train.

Where to stay

Stay in or near the old town: Onkel Emma, the Schlossplatz and most restaurants are walkable from there. Hotel Deutsches Haus sits next to the cathedral, Premier Inn City Centre is at the north edge of the old town, and Magni Boutique Hotel and Altstadthotel Wienecke are in or near the half-timbered Magniviertel. All are mainstream hotels, not gay hotels. For CSD weekend in August, book early.

Closed or changed

- Goldfinger, Denk-Bar, Haifischbar, Come In: these Braunschweig pubs show up in some online lists of "gay bars". We found no evidence that any of them is or was a gay venue: Denk-Bar is a football pub, Haifischbar is a punk and metal bar, and Come In is a bar and sports bar. We've removed them.
- BOYS'n'BEATS is a gay bar in Magdeburg, not Braunschweig.
- "Orichtenbruch", described elsewhere as a queer-friendly residential area, doesn't exist.

Getting around

Braunschweig Hauptbahnhof has direct ICE trains to Berlin (about 1h30), Hannover (about 45 minutes) and Frankfurt (about 2h45). The nearest major airport is Hannover (HAJ), about an hour away. In town, the BSVG runs six tram lines plus buses, and the old town is easy to walk.
