Sottotraccia (literally "undertrack" or "hidden groove") is the venue for Bologna's more politically engaged and culturally diverse queer crowd. Located near the university in the Irnerio area, it is the bar that LGBTQ+ students, artists and activists treat as their living room: a space for art openings, experimental film nights, spoken word performances, poetry slams and DJ sets, sometimes all in the same week. The politics are explicitly feminist and intersectional; the trans and non-binary community is particularly well-served and represented. The bar is small and deliberately unpolished — exposed brickwork, mismatched furniture, local artists' work covering the walls and a different exhibition every month. Drinks are good and affordable. The aperitivo spread is modest but free. The crowd is 20s–35s, student-heavy, politically aware. This is the Bologna queer scene that does not appear in tourist guides — the one that locals actually use for organising, meeting and thinking out loud. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 18:00.
