Costa da Caparica is the Atlantic beach that Lisbon residents have used as their main gay beach for decades — a long stretch of sand on the south bank of the Tagus estuary, about 45–60 minutes from the city centre by public transport. The route involves a ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas followed by a bus connection to Caparica, or a direct bus from Praça de Espanha; both options are straightforward and inexpensive. The beach itself is a long Atlantic strand — wider, wilder, and more energetic than a Mediterranean beach, with proper Atlantic surf that the Tagus beaches of the city itself do not provide. The established gay section is well-known to Lisbon residents: numbered section markers along the beach make navigation easy. The beach operates as a genuine community gathering point in summer, particularly on weekends when the Lisbon gay scene effectively relocates to the sand for the afternoon before returning to the city for the evening. Costa da Caparica is not a resort beach in the Algarve sense; it is a working beach used by a city, which gives it a democratic and unpretentious character that many visitors find more appealing than the organised resort experience.
