Last verified: October 2026. We could not confirm any hotel in Hamburg as gay-owned or men-only in 2026. The small Hotel Village on Steindamm used to be an upmarket brothel. Some older German guides still call it a "gay hotel", but it describes itself as gay-friendly and takes everyone. The guesthouse-style places on Lange Reihe that once filled this niche have either dropped out of the gay guides or we can't confirm they're still open. What Hamburg has instead is geography. St. Georg, directly behind the Hauptbahnhof, fits about a dozen gay bars, two men's saunas, a leather shop and the gay men's health centre into roughly 800 m. A dozen mainstream hotels sit within a 10-minute walk of it. The second scene, around the Reeperbahn in St. Pauli, is smaller, rougher and later. This guide covers which blocks to sleep on for each scene, what the hotel tax really costs, how the CSD weekend (demonstration on 7 August 2027) affects booking, and how to get home at 3 am.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

The walkable zone is small and flat. Lange Reihe runs about 1 km north-east from the Kirchenallee side of the Hauptbahnhof to Lohmühlenstraße. The gay cafés and bars are mostly between numbers 20 and 95. The side streets off it (Danziger Straße, Kreuzweg, Zimmerpforte and Greifswalder Straße) have the smaller bars and the cruising club. South of Hansaplatz, a second cluster sits on Bremer Reihe, Steindamm, Pulverteich and Rostocker Straße: the saunas, the leather bar and the fetish club. Everything from M&V Bar at Lange Reihe 22 to Dragon Sauna at Pulverteich 37 is under 10 minutes on foot. The Reeperbahn is a different district 3 to 4 km west, a train ride rather than a walk.

Lange Reihe and the north end

Stay here if your evenings start with coffee and cake at Café Gnosa (open since the early 1980s) or Cafe Uhrlaub, then move on to Bellini Bar, Daniel's, Extratour or Pick Up. The street is busy until 1 or 2 am at weekends and quiet by 3 am, with restaurants rather than kiosks. None of the hotels in our listings is on Lange Reihe itself. The George Hamburg on Barcastraße is the closest at the north end: 7–9 min to Uhrlaub and Cube, 11–13 min to M&V, and a 2-minute walk to the Alster shore. It is the calmest address in the district. Numa Hamburg St Georg on Lübeckertordamm near Berliner Tor is 10–12 min from Uhrlaub and 9–11 min from Dragon. It sits on a big road with little life at night. Book it if you want a kitchen and don't need a reception desk.

Two hotels outside our listings are worth knowing. Hotel Wedina on Gurlittstraße, a short walk from the top of Lange Reihe, has long appeared in gay guides as a gay-friendly small hotel. Le Méridien on An der Alster is the design hotel gay guides usually name for lake views. Confirm both before booking.

Steindamm, Pulverteich and Bremer Reihe

Most gay visitors end the night in the southern half of St. Georg. Vienna House Easy by Wyndham Hamburg on Ellmenreichstraße is under a minute from Schatziii and Bar Kunterbunt on Bremer Reihe, and 3–4 min from M&V. Hotel Village at Steindamm 4 is next door to Men's Heaven (about 50 m) and 5–7 min from Lange Reihe. Further east, Novum Style at Steindamm 68 is 2–3 min from Dragon and from Tom's Saloon. ARCOTEL Rubin at Steindamm 63 is 2–3 min from S.L.U.T. Club and 6–8 min from the cafés halfway along Lange Reihe. The Rubin advertises soundproofed windows, which matter on this street. The Scottys Hotel Hamburg on Kurt-Schumacher-Allee is 3 min from Dragon and 11–13 min from M&V.

This part of St. Georg is still awake at 3 am. Steindamm has late kiosks, takeaways and traffic. Hansaplatz and the station end of Bremer Reihe have open drug dealing and street sex work, and the heaviest police presence in Hamburg. From August 2026 the city extended its ban on drinking alcohol in public from the station into wider parts of St. Georg, including Hansaplatz, Steindamm and the bus station, initially for a year. Carrying weapons is also banned in the station area. For a sober man walking home it is unpleasant more than dangerous. Keep your phone in your pocket, ignore approaches, and stay on Steindamm or Lange Reihe rather than cutting through the quieter lanes.

The station front

Reichshof Hamburg faces the Hauptbahnhof on Kirchenallee. It is a 1910 building with its Art Deco interiors intact, and Lange Reihe starts at the end of the block, 5–7 min away. Generator Hostel Hamburg on Steintorplatz is 5–7 min from M&V and 2–3 min from Men's Heaven. It has dorms and private rooms, with a loud backpacker bar downstairs. Villa Viva Hamburg is on the wrong side of the tracks for this purpose. It is on Schultzweg, south of the station, 13–15 min from M&V and 10–12 min from Dragon, and the walk goes through an office district that is dead after 8 pm. The squares in front of the station on both sides (Hachmannplatz, Steintorplatz) are where most of the city's late-night trouble happens. Walk through, don't hang around.

The Alster edge

Hotel Atlantic on An der Alster is the white 1909 palace on the lake, and it is 6–8 min from M&V. Hamburg's grandest hotel and its gay street are neighbours. Barcelo Hamburg on Ferdinandstraße, near the Binnenalster, is 10–12 min from M&V through the city centre, which is empty and safe at night. On the east shore, Hotel Alsterblick on Schwanenwik in Uhlenhorst is 17–19 min along the water from the north end of Lange Reihe, and some rooms look over the lake. On the west side, Hotel Fresena on Moorweidenstraße near Dammtor station is a quiet address in the university district. Lange Reihe is 20–23 min on foot, or take the S-Bahn from Dammtor to the Hauptbahnhof.

St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn

The St. Pauli scene is a handful of bars rather than a district: WunderBar on Talstraße, Daddy's Bar on Hamburger Berg, Piccadilly on Silbersacktwiete and the old-school Toom Peerstall. Add the drag shows at Olivia Jones Bar on Große Freiheit and the PINK INC parties on Spielbudenplatz. Hotel am Beatles-Platz on Nobistor is 2 min from Olivia Jones and 3–5 min from WunderBar, and at weekends you will hear Große Freiheit until dawn. east Hotel Hamburg on Simon-von-Utrecht-Straße is a residential street and you'll sleep better there. It is 6–8 min to Talstraße and about 5 min to Spielbudenplatz. Motel One Hamburg by the Michel church is 15–17 min from WunderBar, closer to the harbour than to the bars. At 3 am the Reeperbahn is full of stag parties and pickpockets. That makes it safer than an empty street, but watch your wallet on Hamburger Berg.

Further out

SIDE Design Hotel Hamburg on Drehbahn in the Neustadt sits between the two scenes and close to neither: 25–27 min to M&V, 30–33 min to Talstraße. 25hours Hotel HafenCity is 28–31 min from Lange Reihe, through a district that is silent at night. NYX Hotel Hamburg in Hammerbrook is 13–15 min from Dragon along Nordkanalstraße and Kurt-Schumacher-Allee. That's an office area, so late at night take the S-Bahn one stop or a taxi. Leonardo Hotel Hamburg Airport in Langenhorn is about 10 km from St. Georg. Only book it for an early flight.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

As of October 2026 we know of no hotel in Hamburg that is gay-owned and marketed as such, no men-only hotel and no clothing-optional guesthouse. A widely used international gay travel guide reached the same conclusion in 2025 and lists only mainstream hotels in and around St. Georg.

Hotel Village is the one that causes confusion. Some German gay travel sites still describe it as a small gay hotel, but the hotel itself and current listings call it gay-friendly and open to everyone. Treat it as popular with gay guests rather than as a gay venue with gay rules. The draw is the ex-brothel décor (mirrors, plush, strong colours). We couldn't verify who owns it.

Older guides also list Galerie-Hotel Sarah Petersen, a small guesthouse on Lange Reihe, as gay-friendly. We could not confirm that it is still open in 2026, so check directly before booking.

The men-only spaces in Hamburg are venues, not hotels. Dragon, Men's Heaven and Apollo Sauna in Altona are men's saunas, and S.L.U.T. Club and Contact are men-only cruise bars. We found none that is linked to a hotel or sells room packages. There is no gay beach in the city. The Elbe shore at Övelgönne is mixed, and people keep their clothes on.

Booking rules that bite

    • Visitors. German hotels generally don't charge "joiner fees", and a second man at breakfast raises no eyebrows in St. Georg. Rules on overnight visitors vary by hotel and we have not checked each one. Hostels don't allow visitors in dorms, and app-only places like Numa expect the number of guests you booked. If two of you will sleep there, book the room for 2. Breakfast and tax are then charged correctly, the hotel knows who is in the building, and the question never comes up.
    • Registration and ID. Since January 2025 German citizens no longer have to fill in a hotel registration form. Foreign guests still do, and must show a passport or national ID card at check-in.
    • Kultur- und Tourismustaxe. Hamburg's hotel tax is a fixed amount per adult per night. The amount steps up with the net room price and works out at roughly 2.4% to 5.5%. For stays booked in 2025 or 2026 it is nothing up to €10, €0.60 up to €25, €1.20 up to €50, €2.40 up to €100, and more above that. Business and leisure stays pay the same. Rates go up for bookings made from 1 January 2027 (the €25 to €50 band rises from €1.20 to €1.50). So a room booked now for next summer may be taxed at the old rate, and the same room booked in January at the new one. The tax is worked out per person, so a €180 double booked for 2 is taxed as two shares of €90.
    • No resort fees, but breakfast is often extra at about €15–30 per person in mid-range and luxury hotels. Check what your rate includes.
    • Trade fairs. The Messe exhibition centre is next to Planten un Blomen, and big fairs push St. Georg rates up as sharply as Pride does. Check the fair calendar before you assume a weekend will be cheap.
    • Smoking fees. Most hotels are entirely non-smoking, and that includes cannabis. Cleaning charges for smoking in rooms are common, so ask how much if you might be tempted.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Hamburg Pride (CSD): demonstration Saturday 7 August 2027

Hamburg Pride is run by Hamburg Pride e.V., which has set the 2027 demonstration for 7 August. Dates for the 2027 Pride Week and street festival had not been announced as of October 2026. In 2026 the programme ran from 25 July to 2 August, and the organiser counted a record 300,000 people at the demonstration on 1 August. The street festival is in the city centre around Jungfernstieg, and the after-parties fill St. Georg. Book St. Georg or the Alster hotels (Reichshof, the Atlantic, Vienna House Easy, Hotel Village) as soon as rates for August 2027 open, and realistically by early spring. From the Alster hotels you can walk to both the festival and Lange Reihe in under 15 minutes.

Hamburg International Queer Film Festival: 19 to 24 October 2027

The queer film festival is Germany's oldest. It runs at Kampnagel in Winterhude and at city cinemas including Metropolis, Passage, 3001 and B-Movie. The 2026 edition has just finished. For Kampnagel, the east-shore hotels such as Hotel Alsterblick are closest. For the cinemas St. Georg works, and Passage on Mönckebergstraße is a few minutes from the station. Rooms don't get unusually tight for this festival.

Hamburg Queer Cup: 2027 dates TBA

The Hamburg Queer Cup is a swimming competition at the Schwimmhalle Inselpark in Wilhelmsburg, organised by the queer sports club Startschuss. The 2026 edition ran from 17 to 19 July, and the 2027 dates are TBA. Wilhelmsburg is a short S-Bahn ride south of the Hauptbahnhof, so the hotels around the station and Villa Viva make sense.

We could not confirm any regular bear week, leather weekend or circuit festival in Hamburg for 2027. Party series such as PINK INC publish their dates a few weeks ahead.

Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. The S1 S-Bahn takes about 25 minutes from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof. A single ticket is about €4 (check the current HVV fare), and the Deutschlandticket covers it. Every St. Georg hotel in this guide is 1 to 15 minutes' walk from the Hauptbahnhof. A taxi to St. Georg takes 20–30 minutes and costs about €30–40 (US$35–45).

Night transport. U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains run all night, less often, on Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays. On weeknights night buses take over from the central stops around Rathausmarkt and the Hauptbahnhof. To get between the two scenes, take the U3 from St. Pauli or the S-Bahn from Reeperbahn station. Either reaches the Hauptbahnhof in under 10 minutes.

Taxis and apps. Street taxis are easy to find outside the Hauptbahnhof and on the Reeperbahn. Uber, Bolt and FREENOW all operate in Hamburg, and MOIA runs shared electric minibuses in the inner city. A taxi from Talstraße to Lange Reihe is about €15–20.

Walking. Lange Reihe, Danziger Straße and the Alster shore are fine at any hour. Steindamm is busy and well lit. Walk briskly across Hansaplatz, the station end of Bremer Reihe and the squares in front of the station. In St. Pauli, stick to the Reeperbahn itself and Talstraße rather than the dark side streets towards the harbour.

Health, safety and the law

Testing, PrEP and PEP. Hein & Fiete is the gay men's health centre at Pulverteich 21, in the middle of the sauna cluster. It offers free, anonymous HIV and STI testing and counselling on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 to 20:00; book on 040 240333. The UKE university hospital runs a sexual health clinic called check Point at Martinistraße 52 in Eppendorf, with a branch at Am Wall 1 in Harburg. It treats STIs and prescribes PrEP and PEP, working with Hein & Fiete. AIDS-Hilfe Hamburg is at Lange Reihe 30–32. For PEP out of hours, go to a hospital emergency department: UKE, or the infectious diseases team at Asklepios Klinik St. Georg on Lohmühlenstraße, a few minutes from Lange Reihe. Call first. Visitors without German health insurance pay for PrEP themselves, so bring your own supply.

App dates. In the sources we checked we found no dated reports from 2025 or 2026 of robberies of gay app users in Hamburg, but these robberies happen in other German cities. Meet first in a bar on Lange Reihe, tell the front desk or a friend where you are going, and don't leave your drink with someone you have just met.

Policing in St. Georg. St. Georg and the station area have the heaviest police presence in the city. It targets drugs and repeat offenders, not the gay scene. Since the alcohol ban was extended in August 2026 you can't drink in the street between the station, Hansaplatz, Steindamm and the bus station. Bars and their terraces are not affected. Germany has full marriage equality, and Hamburg is an easy city to be openly gay in.

Drugs. Cannabis is legal for adults under a 2024 law. You can carry up to 25 g in public, but you can't smoke within sight of schools and playgrounds, or in pedestrian zones between 07:00 and 20:00. Check whether the law has changed before you travel. All other drugs, including GHB and crystal, are still illegal, and hotels can call the police. Hein & Fiete and AIDS-Hilfe offer non-judgemental counselling on chemsex.

Smoking. Restaurants are smoke-free, but small one-room pubs that don't serve food may allow smoking if they put up a sign. Many of the older gay Kneipen (traditional pubs) in St. Georg and St. Pauli are smoking bars.

Parks. Public sex is an offence in Germany. The well-known cruising areas (the Stadtpark around the Blindengarten, Volkspark, Planten un Blomen) are tolerated rather than legal, and police do patrol them.

Three picks

Budget: Vienna House Easy by Wyndham Hamburg. Simple modern rooms at about €80–150 a night (confirm for your dates), and the shortest walk of any hotel in our listings. Schatziii and Kunterbunt are under a minute away, and M&V and Men's Heaven are 3–4 min each. Generator is cheaper if you're travelling alone and happy in a dorm.

Mid-range: The George Hamburg. It is at the quiet end of St. Georg, 7–9 min from the cafés on the upper part of Lange Reihe and 2 min from the Alster for a morning run. It has a proper bar of its own, and rooms are about €140–250. You sleep on a residential street and can still walk home from the bars.

Splurge: Hotel Atlantic. Hamburg's grand lake hotel is 6–8 min from M&V. Few luxury hotels in any city are that close to the gay street. The hotel has changed brands in recent years, so confirm the current name and loyalty programme when booking. Expect about €250–450, and much more during CSD.
