Last verified: October 2026. Washington has no gay hotel. As far as we can verify in late 2026 there is no gay-owned hotel, no men-only guesthouse and no clothing-optional stay anywhere in the District. Gay visitors stay in mainstream hotels, B&Bs and apartments close to the bars. That makes location the only real decision, and the map has changed. Dupont Circle and 17th Street are still the old heart, but most of the newer clubs sit around 14th and U Streets. Logan Circle is the stretch between the two, and Adams Morgan has its own small cluster on 18th Street. A few names have also changed. Hotel Rouge now trades as Kimpton Banneker, and the old Kimpton Topaz has been a Courtyard by Marriott since November 2021. Mid-Atlantic Leather is holding its last weekend at its Capitol Hill host hotel in January 2027 before moving to the Washington Hilton in 2028. This guide covers which blocks to sleep on, walking times in minutes, the 15.95% hotel tax, the big weekends and how to get home after the bars close at 3 am.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

The walkable zone forms a rough triangle. Its points are 17th and P Streets in the west (JR.'s, with Larry's and The Fireplace nearby), 14th and U Streets in the north-east (District Eagle, Bunker, Crush, Revolt, Spark Social House), and Thomas Circle in the south (Crew Club, Green Lantern, Trade). Shaw adds Nellie's, Kiki, Icon, Violet and The Little Gay Pub a few blocks further east, between 9th and 11th Streets. Adams Morgan's three bars sit together at 2309–2319 18th Street. If your hotel is inside that triangle, or no more than 10 minutes outside it, you will walk most nights. Outside it, you will be using Uber.

Two things to know about the triangle. First, the centre of gravity has moved. 17th Street now has mostly the long-running bars, and nearly every club that opened since 2022 is on or near U Street. Second, the ground rises as you head north. The walk from Dupont up Connecticut Avenue to the Hilton, or up 18th Street to Adams Morgan, is uphill, so add 2–3 minutes to our figures.

14th and U, and Shaw

U Street Hostel at 1931 13th Street NW is the closest bed in our listings to the new scene. District Eagle is 180 m away, which is 2–4 min on foot, and the clubs at 2001–2009 14th Street (BUNKER, Crush Dance Bar, Spark Social House) are a similar distance. Revolt sits on the 14th and U corner. 13th Street is residential, which helps with noise. You will still hear U Street on Friday and Saturday until well after 3 am. Pure Voyage at the Shaw on T Street NW is 2 min from UPROAR, 7–9 min from Nellie's and Kiki, and 14–17 min from 14th and U. It has about 48 reviews and no website, so confirm before booking. The neighbourhood has no full-service hotel. Generator, a hostel-hotel brand on the Logan Circle side that is not in our listings, is another budget option to check.

At 3 am, U Street between 9th and 14th is the busiest street in the city, which is the problem as well as the point. Closing time puts thousands of people on the pavement at once. Walk away from the corner rather than waiting there, and book your car for a side street.

Dupont Circle and 17th Street

This is the classic base, with quiet townhouse streets and bars at the end of the block. Swann House B&B, an 1883 mansion at 1808 New Hampshire Avenue, is 44 m from JR.'s, so call it 1–2 min. It is still taking bookings through the big platforms, but confirm directly. The Carlyle, the Kimpton across the road at 1731 New Hampshire Avenue, is 2–3 min from JR.'s and 12–15 min from 14th and U. It is the best full-service hotel in the zone. Sojourn at DuPont Place on 19th Street is 2–3 min from Larry's Lounge and works more like serviced apartments. DCDigs on P Street is 7–9 min from JR.'s and has only three reviews.

South and west of the circle are The Dupont Hotel (8–10 min to JR.'s, 4–6 min to The Fireplace), SIXTY DC and Maison Dupont (both 11–13 min to JR.'s). The next group is Hotel Madera (2–3 min to The Fireplace, 15–18 to JR.'s), O Museum in The Mansion, which is next door to The Fireplace, and Eurostars St Gregory (18–21 min to JR.'s). All of these are 20–29 min from 14th and U, which is a long walk at 2 am, so you will usually take a car home from U Street. The Churchill Embassy Row and the Washington Hilton sit up the Connecticut Avenue slope, 9–14 min from JR.'s.

At 3 am the residential streets are quiet and mostly well lit. The exception is the park in the middle of Dupont Circle. Walk around it, not through it. There was violence in the park late on WorldPride parade night in June 2025.

Logan Circle and Thomas Circle

Washington Plaza Hotel, the curved 1962 Morris Lapidus building on Thomas Circle, is 3–4 min from Crew Club. It is a short walk to Trade, Green Lantern and Number Nine, and 18–22 min to 14th and U straight up 14th Street, which stays lit and busy. It also has an outdoor pool in summer. Kimpton Banneker at 1315 16th Street (the former Hotel Rouge) is 10–13 min from JR.'s, 6–8 from Crew Club and 16–19 from 14th and U. If you want both scenes equally, it is the most central hotel in our listings. Courtyard Washington DC Dupont Circle at 1733 N Street and the Beacon Hotel on Rhode Island Avenue are both 12–15 min from JR.'s and 10–12 from Crew Club.

Adams Morgan

HighRoad Hotel on Belmont Road is 71 m, about 1–2 min, from Pitchers, A League of Her Own and Sinners and Saints. It rates 4.8 from over 900 reviews and has private rooms as well as dorms. The LINE DC, in a converted church on Euclid Street, is 4–6 min from the same strip and 15–18 min down to JR.'s. Inside the hotel, the noise comes from its own bars. Outside, it comes from the 18th Street weekend crowd, which is mostly straight, loud and drunk after 1 am. Walk on Columbia Road or Belmont rather than through the middle of the crowd.

Downtown, Penn Quarter and the West End

Eaton DC on K Street is the downtown hotel with the most personality and is 10–12 min from Crew Club. The St. Regis is 11–13 min from Crew Club. Hilton Garden Inn, ROOST White House and the Washington Marriott at Metro Center are all 13–17 min from Crew Club and around half an hour from 14th and U. The Willard, the Hay-Adams and the Monaco are 20–25 min or more. After 10 pm the K Street and Franklin Square office blocks are empty. They are not dangerous, but nobody is around, so take a car. To the west, One Washington Circle and the Melrose are 11–13 min from The Fireplace and suit people who want Georgetown by day. The Watergate is 21–23 min from The Fireplace.

Capitol Hill and NoMa

This area has its own small queer scene. Red Bear Brewing, the gay-owned brewery at 209 M Street NE, is 5–7 min from citizenM NoMa and 8–9 min from Hyatt Place, which has an outdoor pool. As You Are on Barracks Row is 13–15 min from the Capitol Hill Hotel and 17–19 from The George. Hotel Nell is 12–13 min from Red Bear. Book here for MAL in January 2027, for Union Station trains, or if you are working near the Capitol. On any other trip, a night out means a 10–15 min ride each way to the main bars. NoMa and the blocks around Union Station are quiet late at night, so don't walk them alone with your phone out.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

We found none. No hotel or guesthouse in the District markets itself as gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional in 2026, and every hotel in our listings is a mainstream gay-friendly property. Washington did once have a few small gay-run inns around Dupont, but none of them operates that way today. Most of the claims you will see online about gay-run DC hotels are copied from older guides.

Where gay men actually stay:

    • Kimpton hotels. The brand has courted gay guests for decades. In our listings that means The Carlyle, Kimpton Banneker, the Monaco and The George. Hotel Madera is often still described as a Kimpton, but its current marketing presents it as an independent boutique hotel, so check if loyalty points matter to you.
    • Dupont B&Bs and apartments. These include Swann House, Sojourn, DCDigs and private rentals on the gay booking platforms, which cluster around Swann Street and Dupont.
    • The MAL hotel. In January the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill effectively becomes a gay hotel for four days, and the Washington Hilton takes over from 2028.

Crew Club at 1321 14th Street NW is the city's gay bathhouse. It is open 24 hours and has private rooms, but it is not a hotel and should not be treated as one. Check its own rules on stay length and ID.

Name changes worth knowing: Hotel Rouge is now Kimpton Banneker (same address, 1315 16th Street). Kimpton Topaz reopened in November 2021 as the 143-room Courtyard Washington DC Dupont Circle. The St Gregory now trades as Eurostars St Gregory Dupont Circle Georgetown.

    Booking rules that bite

    • Hotel tax is 15.95%. It is charged on top of the room rate, so many older guides that quote 14–15% are out of date. The October 2026 change to DC's general sales tax does not affect the hotel rate.
    • Daily fees. Many downtown and Dupont hotels add a daily "destination", "amenity" or "urban" fee that is not always shown in the headline OTA price. Check the final screen. Valet parking in Dupont is expensive, and you won't need a car.
    • Visitors. There is no police registration of guests in the US, and hotels have no joiner fees. The person who checks in shows photo ID and a credit card for an incidentals hold. DC's Human Rights Act covers sexual orientation and gender identity in public accommodations, so a hotel cannot treat two men or a trans guest differently. The golden tip still applies: book for 2 guests on the OTA. It rarely changes the price, it gets you two key cards, and the front desk never needs to ask. Hostels are different. HighRoad and U Street Hostel are likely to keep non-guests out of dorms and rooms, so confirm their policy.
    • Age and ID. Many US hotels require the booking guest to be 21. Some hostels limit or refuse local residents, so out-of-state travellers should check.
    • Cancellation. Rates for Pride, MAL weekend and the Cherry Blossom period are often non-refundable or require prepayment. In MAL's 2027 host-block hotel, the deadlines are the organiser's, not the hotel's usual ones.
    • Smoking. Hotel rooms in DC are effectively non-smoking, and that includes cannabis. Expect a cleaning charge if you smoke. Confirm the amount with your hotel.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

    Mid-Atlantic Leather, 15–18 January 2027

MAL, produced by Centaur MC over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, returns to the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill from 15 to 18 January 2027. It is the last edition there after nearly two decades, because the event moves to the Washington Hilton from 2028. The Hyatt's lobby is the real event, and plenty of people who aren't staying there spend all weekend in it. If the Hyatt is full, YOTEL is across New Jersey Avenue, and Phoenix Park, Hyatt Place and citizenM NoMa are all a short walk. The Hyatt usually sells out months ahead, so on 31 October you are already late. Book the overflow hotels now. For 2028, The Churchill, Sojourn, HighRoad and The LINE are all within 5–10 min of the Hilton, and the late bars on 17th Street and in Adams Morgan become walkable.

Cherry Weekend (spring 2027, dates unverified)

This is the Cherry Fund's party weekend for charity. The 2025 edition was in April, not February as many guides say. We could not confirm the 2027 dates, so check with the Cherry Fund. 2027 is also the 100th anniversary of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, so expect citywide rates in late March and April to be higher than usual. Book Dupont or Logan once the dates are out.

Trans Pride Washington DC (spring 2027, TBA)

Trans Pride Washington DC was held on 16 May in 2026. The 2027 date had not been announced as of October 2026. The organisation's founder, SaVanna Wanzer, died in April 2026.

DC Black Pride, 28–31 May 2027

DC Black Pride runs over Memorial Day weekend, from 28 to 31 May 2027. It is widely credited as the first Black Pride. The official host hotel for 2027 is not confirmed, so wait for the organisers before booking a downtown chain. Otherwise, Logan Circle and Shaw put you closest to Thurst Lounge and the U Street parties. Book 2–3 months ahead, because it is a holiday weekend for the whole city.

    Capital Pride, June 2027 (TBA)

The 2026 edition of Capital Pride ran from 12 to 21 June. As of October 2026, the Capital Pride Alliance had not published 2027 dates. Some third-party sites list a parade date, but treat it as a guess until the organiser confirms. Kinetic's circuit nights (18–21 June in 2026, at Echostage and BUNKER) are also TBA for 2027. Book Dupont, Logan or U Street 3–4 months ahead. The Carlyle, Kimpton Banneker and Washington Plaza are the first hotels to sell out. The parade and festival footprint has moved over the years, so check the route before choosing between Dupont and 14th Street.

    Reel Affirmations

The last edition of Reel Affirmations in our records was in October 2023. No 2026 or 2027 edition had been announced as of October 2026.

    Getting back at 3 am

The basic mismatch. DC bars can serve until 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights, but Metro closes at 2 am on those nights and at midnight from Sunday to Thursday. Be on the platform 15 minutes before closing time, because the last trains run before the official close. After that, your options are walking, Uber or Lyft. All three work well in the triangle. Taxis can also be hailed on 14th Street and Connecticut Avenue.

From the airports. Reagan National (DCA) is on the Blue and Yellow lines. For Dupont, change to the Red Line at Metro Center or Gallery Place. For U Street, change to the Green Line at Gallery Place, Yellow or Green. Allow 30–40 min door to door. By car it is about 15–25 min outside rush hour. Dulles (IAD) is on the Silver Line direct to Foggy Bottom, Farragut West, McPherson Square and Metro Center, taking roughly an hour to downtown. If you land after about 10 pm on a weeknight, take a car instead. From BWI, the Amtrak and MARC trains run to Union Station. MARC has limited late-night and weekend service, so check before relying on it. Fares on all routes vary with time and demand, so check the app.

    Walking, street by street.

    • 14th Street from Thomas Circle to U is well lit and busy until closing. It is the safest long walk in the zone.
    • From 17th Street to 14th Street, P, Q and R Streets are residential and quiet. That is fine in a pair. On your own, keep to the avenues.
    • Avoid the Dupont Circle park late at night.
    • Don't hang around the corner of 14th and U at closing time. Walk a block before you order a car.
    • 18th Street in Adams Morgan is crowded and messy late on weekends.
    • Downtown, NoMa and Capitol Hill are empty late at night, so get a car to your door.

Health, safety and the law

Clinic. Whitman-Walker Health at 1525 14th Street NW is in the middle of the gay zone. It is DC's LGBTQ and HIV community health centre and offers HIV and STI testing, PrEP and PEP. For PEP, call when they open, because it needs to start within 72 hours. Out of hours, go to an emergency department, for example George Washington University Hospital in Foggy Bottom, and say "PEP" at triage. Check their current walk-in hours.

Apps. Arrange first meetings in a bar, not your room. Tell someone the address. Keep cash, passport and a second card in the room safe. Hotel lobbies are the safest place to meet a stranger, and in the US nobody will ask a visitor for ID. DC police regularly report robberies and armed robberies across the city, so don't assume the gay zone is immune.

Policing. Since August 2025 there has been a visible federal law-enforcement and National Guard presence on DC streets. Check its scale before you travel and carry ID. Remember that the National Mall, Rock Creek Park and many squares are federal land, where federal law applies.

Cannabis. Under Initiative 71, adults 21 and over may possess small amounts on private property in DC. Smoking in public, in bars or in hotel rooms is not allowed, and on federal land possession is a federal offence. Other drugs are illegal. Chemsex in a hotel room can get you removed, charged a cleaning fee, or put on the end of a 911 call. Smoking is banned in bars and restaurants.

Trans travellers. DC law protects gender identity in hotels. If the name on your ID and your booking differ, sort it out with the hotel before arrival.

Three picks

Budget: U Street Hostel. It is 2–4 min from District Eagle and the 14th Street clubs, so 3 am closing becomes a short walk and not a fare. If you want a private room and a better review score, HighRoad in Adams Morgan rates 4.8.

Mid-range: The Carlyle. It is a Kimpton on New Hampshire Avenue, 2–3 min from JR.'s and 12–15 min from 14th and U. No other full-service hotel is as close to both scenes and still on a quiet street.

Splurge: The Dupont Hotel. It sits right on the circle, 8–10 min from JR.'s and 4–6 from The Fireplace. It is the only top-end hotel you can walk home to from the bars instead of taking a car.
