The honest summary: Vienna is an easy, safe and legally equal city for gay travellers, with three good gay saunas, a solid leather scene and a Pride that fills the Ring every June. The bar scene, though, is smaller than it was a few years ago. In June 2026 the Falter ran a story under the headline "In Wien sperrt eine schwule Bar nach der anderen zu" (in Vienna, one gay bar after another is closing), and Mango Bar and Felixx, two long-time names, are gone. What's left is compact, friendly and mostly within ten minutes' walk of the Naschmarkt.
Legal in one line: same-sex marriage since 2019 and joint adoption since 2016. Anti-discrimination law covers employment only, not goods, services or housing. A third gender marker ("divers") exists, and as of October 2026 there is still no ban on conversion therapy.
Where the scene is
There's no single gay street. The core is the area around the Naschmarkt, where three districts meet: Mariahilf (6th), Wieden (4th) and Margareten (5th). U4 Kettenbrückengasse is the most useful stop. Most of the bars, the main community house and two of the three saunas are within a short walk of it. Current guides (misterb&b, wien.info) call this area "Naschmarkt / Mariahilf"; nobody officially calls it a gay village.
Two smaller clusters sit elsewhere. In the 1st district, Tiefer Graben has Why Not, the city's longest-running gay club, and City Bar Vienna almost next door. In Neubau (7th) there are a few relaxed café-bars: Augenblick, Binter and the queer-feminist Café Roza.
Bars and cafés
Around the Naschmarkt, the bars that were confirmed open in Patroc's October 2026 listings and other current guides are:
- Café Savoy: the grand old coffeehouse on Linke Wienzeile, mixed by day and mostly gay in the evening, with a monthly Sunday brunch.
- Village Bar: a music-video bar on Stiegengasse with a younger crowd.
- Marea Alta: a small queer bar with lesbian roots on Gumpendorfer Straße, with karaoke, drag and a dancing cellar on weekends.
- The Hive: a café-bar on Magdalenenstraße (the old RedCarpet) with a cellar for later nights.
- Villa Vida: the café of the Türkis Rosa Lila Villa, Vienna's queer community house. Drag bingo, quizzes, brunch and meetups run most days of the week.
- Pride & Pleasure: new in September 2026 on the old Schik Bar site, Schikanedergasse 5. It's too new to judge.
- Cafe Rifugio and Raymond's are small, low-key café-bars.
- Sauna Kaiserbründl, Weihburggasse 18–20 in the 1st district: a 19th-century bathhouse with Moorish tiles and a columned hall, and the one to see even if you only do one. Its own site lists Sunday–Friday 14:00–24:00 and Saturday 14:00–02:00.
- Apollo Sauna, Wimbergergasse 34 (7th): running since 1989, open daily 14:00–02:00, with a bear and mature-men crowd.
- Römersauna, Rüdigergasse 2 (5th): the former Sauna Frisco, with late opening until 04:00 on Friday and Saturday and cheaper entry for under-25s.
- Vienna Pride runs for about two weeks before the parade. In 2026 it ran from 29 May to 14 June. The Regenbogenparade was on Saturday 13 June 2026: it left the Rathaus at noon and went once round the Ring, and 2026 was its 30th year. Funding cuts shrank the Pride Village on Rathausplatz to a single day in 2026. The 2027 dates were not announced at the time of writing. Vienna Gay Pride — Regenbogenparade
- Regenbogenball, the 29th edition, is on 23 January 2027 at the Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn, black tie. Regenbogenball Vienna
- Wien in Schwarz, LMC Vienna's fetish weekend, runs 23–26 October 2026.
- Vienna Drag Festival takes place in mid-October and ran 13–18 October in 2026.
- Identities, the queer film festival, runs in June of odd-numbered years. The 2027 dates hadn't been published at the time of writing.
- Mango Bar (Laimgrubengasse, opened 1981): closed early 2026 (Falter, June 2026; Travel Gay lists it closed).
- Felixx (Gumpendorfer Straße 5): closed. Kisss Bar has closed too.
- Schik Bar (Schikanedergasse 5): closed. Pride & Pleasure opened in the space in September 2026.
- X-Bar (Raimundhof): closed.
- Sport Sauna (Lange Gasse 10): closed. Sauna Frisco is now Römersauna.
- Café Berg: closed in 2017. The Löwenherz bookshop next door carries on.
- Café Willendorf: replaced by Villa Vida in the Rosa Lila Villa.
- Frauencafé: continues as Flinte (Lange Gasse 11), a FLINTA bar. Google showed it as temporarily closed in October 2026, so check before you go.
- Stiefelknecht: the Wimmergasse address now belongs to a different bar.
- Alte Lampe (Zentagasse 30, from 1956): sources disagree on whether it's still a gay bar, and we couldn't confirm it.
- Pratersauna: this was a nightclub, not a gay sauna, and it closed in 2026.
- Getting in: Vienna Airport (VIE) is about 18 km southeast. The CAT runs non-stop to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes. The S7 is slower but much cheaper.
- Getting around: The U-Bahn runs all night on Friday, Saturday and nights before holidays, and Nightline buses run on other nights. There are no ticket barriers, but plain-clothes inspectors fine you on the spot, so buy and validate before you board.
- Timing: Most bars are busy from about 22:00. Several open only Thursday to Saturday, and Eagle, Why Not, City Bar and F56 are weekend-only.
- Cash: Smaller bars and saunas may still prefer cash.
- Apps: Romeo (PlanetRomeo) is still big in the German-speaking world, alongside Grindr.
- Servus: hi or bye, informal.
- Grüß Gott: the polite hello in shops.
- Ein Spritzer, bitte: a white wine with soda water, the local default drink.
- schwul / lesbisch / queer: gay / lesbian / queer.
- Schwarzkappler: ticket inspector.
For leather and cruising, Eagle Vienna (Blümelgasse 1, Friday and Saturday 21:00–04:00) and Sling (Kettenbrückengasse 4, open daily) are the two bars to know. The full list is in the Vienna gay bars guide.
Clubs and party nights
Vienna has very few permanent gay clubs. Most of the dancing happens at roaming party nights in mainstream venues. Why Not opens Friday and Saturday from 22:00. Club Titanic on Theobaldgasse hosts Pitbull, the monthly Saturday party for bears and cubs. Other recurring nights in 2026 listings include Ken Club and PiNKED at Camera Club (Neubaugasse 2), FPlus at Grelle Forelle, Männer im Loft at The Loft on the Gürtel, BallCanCan (Balkan queer) at Ramien, and the big Circus parties a few times a year. Dates move, so check Patroc's club calendar or the venues' Instagram the week you're in town.

Vienna has exactly three gay saunas, and all three are open:

Cruising and fetish
The indoor options are the reliable ones. HARD ON (LMC Vienna) is the LMC Vienna clubhouse on Hamburgerstraße, a members' venue with themed nights Friday to Sunday where guests can join at the door. F56 – FFIFTYSIX in Josefstadt is a large weekend cruise club. Kino-Labyrinth in Favoriten is an adult cinema with a maze. In summer the Toter Grund at the end of the Donauinsel naturist zone is where gay men sunbathe. Public sex is an offence in Austria, and we don't give directions to outdoor cruising spots. Community, shops and history
The Rosa Lila Villa on Linke Wienzeile, squatted by lesbian and gay activists in 1982, is the community house. It's home to Villa Vida, counselling and Queer Base, which supports LGBTIQ+ refugees (Queer Base). HOSI Wien — Homosexuelle Initiative Wien, Austria's oldest LGBTQ+ rights group (1979), runs the café Gugg on Heumühlgasse. QWIEN — Zentrum für queere Geschichte Wien is the centre for queer history. For books, Lowenherz on Berggasse has been the queer bookshop since 1993 (Monday–Thursday 10–19, Friday 10–20, Saturday 10–18).
Pride and the calendar
The Life Ball, the big AIDS charity gala at the Rathaus, ended after its 2019 edition and hasn't been replaced.

Is Mango Bar still open?
No. Mango Bar closed in early 2026, and Felixx and Schik Bar have closed too. Village, Café Savoy, Marea Alta and The Hive are the main bars in the area now.
How many gay saunas does Vienna have?
Three: Kaiserbründl in the 1st district, Apollo City Sauna in the 7th and Römersauna (formerly Frisco) in the 5th. Sport Sauna has closed.
When is Vienna Pride?
The Regenbogenparade is on a Saturday in June, with about two weeks of Pride events before it. In 2026 the parade was on 13 June. The 2027 date wasn't announced when we last checked.
Is Vienna safe for gay travellers?
Yes. Same-sex couples are a normal sight, and the city government backs Pride. The one legal gap is that private businesses can still legally refuse service on grounds of sexual orientation, though that's rare in practice in Vienna.
